Translation / modern text
Casimir, by the grace of God King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Lord and Heir of Rus, Prussia, etc. We announce by the tenor of this [document] to all whom it concerns: that considering the heavy hardships and toils, as well as the outlays and expenses incurred with great zeal and diligence by the inhabitants of our city of Lviv around and during the construction of the walls of said city and the moats, and wishing to show them our gracious favor and make them more eager to complete the work begun, we graciously release, make free, have released, and by means of this document exempt them from the oppression of paying taxes, tributes, and [bestowing upon them freedom] from all and individual contributions, customs/fees, and burdens imposed, [or] to be enacted, by whatever name they may be called, from this day forward exclusively until the expiration of six consecutive years. To all of you, individual collectors and officials collecting taxes and enforcing dues, we entrust and command that you preserve the said freedom of our burghers and collect nothing from them on account of such burdens. In witness whereof our seal has been appended to this [document]. Given at the assembly in Lublin, on Tuesday after the feast of Saint Valentine, in the year of our Lord one thousand four hundred and eighty-four.
