Mandate of King Sigismund I the Old restricting the trade rights of Lviv Jews
King Sigismund I the Old restricts the right of Lviv Jews and foreigners to trade exclusively to annual fairs and to transactions involving oxen, wax, and raw hides for cash or cloth cut by the ell. He forbids them from peddling in towns and villages under penalty of confiscation of goods for the benefit of the Lviv castle.

Sigismund, by the grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, etc., lord and heir.
To all and individual dignitaries and officials, voivodes, starosts, leaseholders, heirs, nobility, reeves, as well as mayors and town councillors of cities and towns, and superiors of any places, and their deputies, to whom this letter shall come, sincerely and faithfully beloved by us, royal grace. We make it known to you and to each of you by this letter that, although we previously gave the Lviv Jews the ability to trade in all kinds of goods and in all ways according to the pleasure of our will, yet having greater regard, as is fitting, for the general public of the burghers and merchants of the same city of Lviv, we have thus restricted and do restrict the aforementioned ability granted to the Jews, so that the Lviv Jews themselves and any other foreigners should not trade except during fairs, buying only for cloth cut by the ell or for cash, oxen, wax, and raw ox, cow, sheep, and calf hides, and nothing else besides those mentioned above; nor should they, on market days or any other days, circulate through towns and villages, [buying?] or selling any things, but should wait for the fairs under penalty of losing those same things. Therefore, we command you that, upon the call in the name of these Lviv burghers and merchants, you arrest and seize all things and goods which these Jews would dare to occupy and sell or acquire contrary to this ordinance, and order them to be delivered and kept for the benefit of our treasury at our Lviv castle, and deliver them, not daring to act otherwise under penalty of our displeasure. Given in our city of Piotrków, at the general sejm, on the Monday next before the feast of the Nativity of the Lord, in the year one thousand five hundred and twenty-first, the fifteenth year of our reign.
