We announce by the tenor of this [document] to all whom it may concern, present and future, who shall come to know of this, that whereas a dispute arose before Our Majesty between the illustrious mayor and councilors, the reeve and jurors [and] the entire commonalty of our city of Lwów on one side, and the noble Piotr Odnowski, Chamberlain of Lwów and Starosta of Sącz, heir in the village of Zboiska on the other, regarding the causeway [toll] which is collected by the aforementioned Piotr in the aforementioned village of Zboiska, by which he oppresses the burghers [and] peasants from the village traveling to the Lwów market with goods for sale, acquired by their labor, passing from all sides, contrary to the disposition of privileges and contrary to our judgment, whereby our city of Lwów suffers an excessive shortage of goods for sale, for which reason the aforementioned burghers summoned the aforementioned Piotr before the face of our Majesty on this day. We, having heard the statements, arguments, and responses of the aforementioned parties and having examined our earlier judgment issued between these parties regarding the above, as well as other letters previously granted to the same burghers, adhering to these and our aforementioned judgment and keeping [the same?] judgment in due force and permanence, as we do keep, have judged and by this letter do judge that the aforementioned Piotr Odnowski and his successors, possessors of the aforementioned village of Zboiska, shall permit carters and people of any status or condition traveling along that road to pass freely through the aforementioned causeway and may require from them the payment of duties or causeway [tolls] according to their privileges. However, he shall not be permitted to demand or collect any fee by reason of such causeway [toll] from village peasants traveling from there with their own goods, acquired by their labor and diligence, heading to their own homes or to the market of the city of Lwów, and arriving from anywhere. And he shall be obliged to allow these [peasants] with the said goods to pass through the aforementioned causeway without any hindrance, which shall last for all time. In testimony of this letter, to which our seal has been affixed. Done and given at the general assembly in Kraków on the Thursday next after the feast of Easter, in the year of our Lord one thousand five hundred and twenty-three, in the seventeenth year of our reign.
