Translation / modern text

[In the name of the Lord, amen.] For the eternal memory of the matter. Since the holy majesty of kings and princes, considering human forgetfulness, has decided to entrust what happens in time to writing, so that it may be preserved in human memory. Therefore we, Sigismund, by the grace of God King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, and also lord and heir of the lands of Kraków, Sandomierz, Sieradz, Łęczyca, Kuyavia, Ruthenia, Prussia, as well as Chełmno, Elbląg, Pomerania, etc., announce by the wording of this document to all present and future who shall receive news of this. When the envoys sent to us by the illustrious mayor and councilors of our city of Lviv, among other municipal matters which they were settling with us, submitted before us that the same city of Lviv, during every enemy invasion of our Kingdom and the Ruthenian lands, is accustomed to endure numerous inconveniences from foreign people fleeing into it in panic and in crowds, who fill the same city with manure and mud from their wagons, horses, and cattle, leaving behind an ugly and repulsive appearance after their departure, and due to the necessity of cleaning and clearing it, expose those councilors to trouble and useless expenses; and the said envoys begged us to graciously consider such expenses and allow the same councilors to collect from the said foreign people, fleeing in fear of enemy attack from surrounding towns and villages to them, or from their wagons, a certain amount for the removal of mud and manure brought by their gathering. We, therefore, acceding to this request and considering that our city of Lviv has declined in its public and private resources, and municipal revenues are insufficient for other, much more urgent needs and purposes than the removal of manure and mud, have deemed it right to permit and by this document do permit in perpetuity and for all time the same present and currently serving mayor and councilors, and we give them the authority to demand and collect half a grosz, that is nine denarii, from every wagon of any foreign people seeking shelter in the same city of Lviv and its suburbs in order to avoid violence and the enemy hand, and to use the sum of money collected from this levy for the repair of the city, ramparts, and moats, and for the clearing [?] and removal of that manure and mud, without hindrance from our starosta of Lviv, our other officials, or anyone else; of which we inform all and each individually whom it concerns by this [document]. Ordering that you, by paying and contributing nine denarii, that is half a grosz, to the hands [?] from the individual wagons of the said men during each of your turbulent gatherings to the same city of Lviv for fear of enemies, fully allow those mayor and councilors of Lviv or their officials or servants appointed by them for this purpose to enjoy this permission and authority granted to them by us, not doing otherwise under our grace. In testimony of which our seal has been appended below. Done and given at the general Piotrków sejm, on the nearest Friday after the feast of Saint Valentine, in the year of our Lord one thousand five hundred and twenty-five, the nineteenth year of our reign. In the presence of: the most reverend and reverend fathers in Christ, lords Jan Łaski, Archbishop of Gniezno, born legate and primate, Piotr Tomicki, Bishop of Kraków and Poznań and vice-chancellor of our Kingdom, Maciej Drzewicki of Włocławek, Rafał Leszczyński of Płock, Andrzej Czerski of Przemyśl, Jakub Buczacki of Chełm, and Wawrzyniec Międzyleski of Kamieniec – bishops.
