Translation / modern text

Sigismund, by the grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, of all Prussia, etc., lord and heir. We make known by the tenor of this [document] to all. That, acceding to the requests of the honorable mayor and councilors of our city of Lviv, the provisors of the Holy Spirit Hospital, located within the walls of the same city, and wishing to provide for the benefit of the poor residing therein, we have given and granted, and by these presents do give and grant, our royal consent to the said provisors for the sale to any nobles or dignitaries and officials of our Kingdom of the village called Malechów, belonging to the same hospital, which they cannot conveniently defend against the grievances of the neighboring nobility, on the condition that after its sale it shall be subject to land law and custom and shall be bound and compelled to bear military service, taxes, contributions, and other burdens of the Kingdom, and also that the Lviv councilors themselves, for the sum of money that shall be paid to them for this village of Malechów, shall be obliged to buy and acquire—as soon as they conveniently can—other immovable goods, land or urban, or perpetual rents or rents with the right of redemption, freer [from burdens], for the sustenance, supply, and other needs of the said poor. These goods or rents, once acquired, regardless of whether they are land or urban, we permit to be assigned to the same hospital and to ecclesiastical freedom and immunity, and we ourselves, as far as it is in our power, do assign them, decreeing that they should enjoy and possess such freedom as other ecclesiastical goods and rents, as well as the remaining goods of the same hospital, enjoy and possess. And by this letter, we release these goods to be acquired from the obligation of military service itself, from public contributions and taxes, and from any other secular burden, usually rendered in any way by the possessors of such land or urban goods. In witness whereof, our seal has been appended to this letter. Given in Piotrków at the general sejm, on the nearest Friday after the feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul the Apostle, in the year of our Lord one thousand five hundred and twenty-six, the twentieth year of our reign. [Chancery note on the left:] Peter, bishop and vice-chancellor, signed [with his own hand].
