Translation / modern text

In the name of the Lord, amen. For the eternal memory of the matter. Since it is our special concern that the benefits of our subjects be increased day by day, and especially those that serve the adornment and defense of the Republic, and since this is above all worthy of the royal office of a monarch, it is fitting that the memory of this be handed down to posterity and entrusted to sanctified monuments. Therefore We, Sigismund, by the grace of God King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, and also lord and heir of the lands of Kraków, Sandomierz, Sieradz, Łęczyca, Kujawy, Ruthenia, Prussia, Chełmno, Elbląg, Pomerania, and Masovia etc., announce by the wording of this letter to all and each one individually, whom this concerns and who shall receive knowledge of this: That as once the holy King John I Albert of most bright memory, our predecessor and dearest own brother, graciously granted to the burghers of Lwów the market fees called 'targowe', which, along with our customs duties belonging to us, our Lwów customs officers collected each time for the benefit of our treasury, according to the pleasure of his will, in the collection and use of which said market fees the aforementioned burghers have remained and currently remain from the time of that donation, made to them in the aforementioned manner and presented and shown here before us, until this very day. Now, however, those burghers, resorting to us through their envoys, namely the illustrious Stanisław Wilczek and Andrzej Habrek, councilors of Lwów, sent to us from the body of their council, humbly asked us that we might deign to give, donate, and grant these same market fees, given and yielded to them by the aforementioned brotherly Majesty until the pleasure of his will, to that city for eternity. We, therefore, considering that this city is the first and foremost in our Ruthenian lands, which endures constant enemy attacks and is placed as a barrier to other cities, and desiring to make those burghers more inclined and diligent toward the fortification and adornment of the said city, furthermore desiring to listen to their just and reasonable request, have deemed it worthy to give, donate, and yield to the same burghers of Lwów and their city the mentioned market fees, which have hitherto been peacefully executed and collected by those burghers from every wagon of people arriving in this city with grain and other things, by our certain knowledge and special royal grace, and by the advice and consent of our spiritual and secular advisors present with us at this assembly. By this letter, we give, donate, and yield them for eternity, so that the aforementioned burghers and the council of the said city of Lwów, both present and future, may select, take, collect, and levy market fees of this kind in the aforementioned manner and as they have been collected of old from every wagon, and possess them peacefully and in tranquility, for ages and for all eternity, without any hindrance or opposition, and use them for the common benefit and need, and for the renovation and strengthening of the same city, under the authority of this our privilege. In testimony of which our seal has been appended to this. Done in Kraków at the general assembly, on the Saturday before the nearest Sunday of Reminiscere, in the Year of our Lord one thousand five hundred and thirty-nine, in the thirty-third year of our reign. Present there were the most reverend fathers in Christ, the lords: Piotr of Kraków, Łukasz of Górka of Włocławek, Stanisław of Ostroróg of Poznań, Sebastian Branicki of Chełm, bishops of the churches, as well as the magnificent, noble, and venerable: Jan count of Tarnów, castellan [of Kraków] and grand hetman of the armies of our Kingdom, and starosta of Sandomierz; Piotr Kmita of Wiśnicz, voivode and starosta of Kraków; Piotr of Dąbrowica, [voivode] of Lublin; Feliks Szreński of Sokołów, voivode of Płock, starosta of [Nowe Miasto?] and Płock; Stanisław of Kutno, voivode of Rawa; Piotr of Goryń, voivode of Masovia and starosta of Ciechanów; Mikołaj Wolski, castellan of Sandomierz and chamberlain of the court of the most serene Lady Bona, by the same grace Queen of Poland, our dearest spouse, starosta of Sanok and Lanckorona; Jan of Tęczyn, castellan of Wojnicz and marshal of our court, and starosta of Lublin; Krzysztof of Tarnów, castellan of Radom, treasurer of our Kingdom, starosta of Sieradz and Krzepice; Bernard Maciejowski, castellan of Lublin; Seweryn Boner, [court] treasurer, burgrave, salt-works administrator, and great governor of Kraków; Paweł Zborowski, castellan of Zator and starosta of Oświęcim; Mikołaj Odnowski, castellan of Przemyśl and starosta of Lwów; Paweł of Wola, chancellor of our Kingdom, burgrave of Kraków and starosta of Gostynin; Samuel Maciejowski, vice-chancellor of our Kingdom and dean of Kraków; Jan Działyński, cantor; Paweł Krasowski, provost of Warsaw and canon of Kraków, our secretaries; as well as very many other dignitaries, officials, and our courtiers at the above as credible witnesses, sincerely and faithfully dear to us.
