Translation / modern text

SIGISMUND, by the grace of God King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia etc., Lord and Heir, we announce by the power of this letter to all whom it may concern: whereas when we permitted the famous Jan Fria, a Lviv surgeon, to purchase the Piekarski Mill in the suburb of our city of Lviv from the hands of the prudent Michael and Anna, children of the late Master Michael, a Lviv burgher, and entrusted the matter of said purchase to certain of our commissioners, then the aforementioned Michael and Anna, possessors of the said mill, presented before our said commissioners within the appointed time our letter, in which we left and maintained them in the possession of the said mill until the end of their lives, and requested that they be maintained in their said right of lifetime use of the aforementioned mill; our aforementioned commissioners, having issued no verdict, referred the matter back to us. Therefore, at the time of said referral, when both parties appeared before us legally, having heard their submissions, objections, arguments, and responses, and having considered and examined the entire process of the case, as well as after reading and duly examining our letter, in which we granted the use until the end of their lives to the aforementioned late Master Michael and his children mentioned above, we have left and deemed it necessary to maintain these children of the said late Master Michael, namely Michael and Anna, relying on our said earlier document of use, in the possession and lease of the said mill until the end of their lives, and we do leave and maintain them by means of this our verdict. In testimony of this letter, to which our seal has been appended. Given in Kraków, on Oculi Sunday, at the general sejm, in the Year of our Lord one thousand five hundred and forty, and in the thirty-fourth year of our reign. [Chancery note on the left:] Samuel, Bishop of Chełm and Deputy Chancellor, signed with his own hand. [Seal:] [On a parchment strip, a smaller royal wax seal of Sigismund I preserved in a natural wax bowl, depicting a crowned coat of arms surrounded by an inscription].
