Document of King Sigismund I the Old confirming the St. Agnes fair and abolishing the St. Margaret fair in Lviv
King Sigismund I the Old, at the request of the authorities and the commonalty of Lviv, confirms the former privilege of Casimir Jagiellon for an annual free fair on St. Agnes' Day. At the same time, the monarch definitively cancels and abolishes the previously established fair on St. Margaret's Day as disadvantageous and useless for the city.

[p. 2:]
SIGISMUND, by the grace of God KING of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, of all Prussia and Masovia, lord and heir. We make known by the tenor of this letter to all and each person concerned, present and future, who shall have knowledge of this.
That, graciously acceding to the requests submitted to us on behalf of the honorable mayor, councilors, and the entire community of citizens of our city of Lviv, wishing also that this our city of Lviv might derive more abundant benefits for its growth, so that it may be better strengthened to restrain and repel the incursions of enemies, the annual fair or market, accustomed to be held annually in our said city on every feast of Saint Agnes, granted to these our citizens by the most illustrious King Casimir of blessed memory, our dearest parent, and approved and confirmed by us, we have deemed it appropriate to preserve in accordance with the aforementioned privilege of our parent and the provision contained therein, and by the tenor of these presents we do preserve it, maintaining in force that privilege of our said late parent in all points, articles, and conditions contained therein. That annual fair or market, just as it was always accustomed to be held, we again approve and confirm. Namely, that for merchants and stall-keepers, any people arriving from anywhere to the said city of Lviv for these markets, in accordance with the privilege of our parent himself, such markets are to be free. So that it shall be permitted for everyone to arrive there with their goods and to return from there without hindrance from any person, that is, in accordance with the power and tenor of the said privilege. But the second annual fair or market, which we established for annual holding and organization on the feast of Saint Margaret for the benefit and improvement of our said city and at the request of the Lviv citizens themselves [singulis perquirente et causante vni vngarico portunagio et Theloneo nostro?], which proved useless and disadvantageous for that city, we, by our royal authority, again abolish, cancel, invalidate, and revoke, decreeing that they shall be and remain for all time deprived of all power and significance. In testimony whereof, our seal has been appended to this letter. Given in Kraków at the general assembly, on the Tuesday next after the Sunday of Oculi, in the year of our Lord one thousand five hundred and forty, and in the thirty-fourth year of our reign.

Parchment document in very good condition. A fragment of the text in line 12 (concerning the Hungarian toll/customs and the reasons for abolishing the St. Margaret fair) is partially faded or worn. The royal seal of Sigismund I made of red wax is preserved in a metal protective case on a parchment strip. Daily date: Tuesday after Oculi Sunday (3rd Sunday of Lent) of the year 1540 = March 2, 1540, which is fully consistent with the archival card.
