Permission from King Sigismund I the Old to the authorities of Lviv for the construction of a fulling mill on the city fortifications

Sigismund I the Old, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania (Sigismundus dei gratia Rex Poloniae magnus dux Lithuaniae etc.) Authorities and burghers of the city of Lviv (famatis proconsuli et consulibus eiusdem civitatis [Leopoliensis])
feria secunda proxima post dominicam Laetare, Anno domini Millesimo quingentesimo quadragesimo · Kraków (Cracoviae in Conventione Generali)

King Sigismund I the Old grants the authorities of Lviv permission to erect a fulling mill on municipal land, with the stipulation that the income derived from it must be used exclusively for the strengthening and repair of the city's fortifications. The monarch guarantees the city exclusivity in operating this facility in the area, prohibiting the construction of competing fulling mills.

Translation / modern text

IN THE NAME OF THE LORD, AMEN. To the eternal memory of the matter. We, Sigismund, by the grace of God King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, and also Lord and Heir of the lands of Kraków, Sandomierz, Sieradz, Łęczyca, Kujawy, Ruthenia, and of all Prussia, Masovia, the land of Chełmno, Elbląg, Pomerania, etc. We announce by the wording of this letter to all and each one individually, present and future, whom this concerns and who shall receive knowledge of this. That We, desiring that our city of Lviv, the first in the lands of Ruthenia, situated on those borders of our kingdom where frequent invasions of infidel enemies occur, be the better fortified, improved, and stronger, the more it is provided with an increase in municipal income and benefits, by the advice and consent of our advisors present with us at this general sejm, have deemed it proper to permit and hereby do permit and allow the famous mayor and councilors of the same city to erect, renovate, maintain, and possess a fulling mill, commonly called 'bliech', there around Lviv on their municipal land, wherever it seems most convenient and suitable to them. We have decided to assign, appropriate, give, and grant this same fulling mill by municipal law to this same city of Lviv, as we also give, grant, assign, attach, and forever adjudge by this letter, so that it may be held, kept, and peacefully and safely possessed by the mayor, councilors, and the city itself, and that the annual rent derived from it be collected, selected, and utilized annually in its entirety and forever, yet not turned to other purposes than the defense and repair of the same city, as it is situated on the edges and borders of the kingdom, as has been said. And so that our said city of Lviv may not suffer any inconvenience, damage, or detriment from now on in the said fulling mill, by the wording of this document we again decide and wish it to be guaranteed for the future that neither we, nor our successors, nor the Lviv starosta for the time being shall establish any other fulling mill there around the city of Lviv, nor shall they establish one, nor shall we grant anyone the right to establish and operate one, nor shall they grant such, deeming null and void and ineffective anything that might be done or intended contrary to this our permission and privilege. In testimony of which our seal has been attached to this document. Given in Kraków at the general assembly, on the Monday next after Laetare Sunday, in the Year of Our Lord one thousand five hundred and forty, the thirty-fourth year of our reign. In the presence of [...] and the venerable fathers in Christ, the lords: Jan Latalski, Archbishop of Gniezno, born legate and primate; Piotr Gamrat of Kraków, Łukasz Górka of Kujawy, Sebastian Branicki of Poznań, Jakub Buczacki of Płock, Samuel Maciejowski of Chełm and Deputy Chancellor of the Kingdom of Poland – bishops.
