Confirmation by King Sigismund Augustus of the donation of the village of Wierzbiąż to the Lviv Cathedral Chapter
King Sigismund II Augustus confirms the privilege of King Władysław Jagiełło from 1433, granting the village of Wierzbiąż in the Lviv district, along with all benefits, forests along the Dniester, and customs duties, to the canons of the Lviv Cathedral Chapter founded by him. The document guarantees the Chapter perpetual possession of these goods and the right to build dams and ponds.

SIGISMUND AUGUST
By the grace of God, KING of Poland, Grand DUKE of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, etc., lord and heir. We make known by the content of this present to all whom it behooves to know. That when, in the name of the Venerable Lviv Chapter, a parchment letter was presented before us, under the title and with the suspended seal of the Most Serene Władysław, King of Poland, our predecessor, intact, undamaged, and bearing no trace of defect, serving the same Venerable Lviv Chapter. And a humble request was brought to us that we might deign to approve, confirm, and ratify this same letter and everything contained therein with our authority. The tenor of which letter follows word for word as follows:
IN THE NAME OF THE LORD, AMEN. For an eternal memory of the matter. Since among the benefits of human nature nothing is considered more worthy of memory, a proper requirement dictates that the actions of men be immortalized by writing and the recording of witnesses, so that they do not vanish into oblivion with the passage of time. Therefore we, Władysław, by the grace of God KING of Poland, and also of the lands of Kraków, Sandomierz, Sieradz, Łęczyca, Kuyavia, Grand Duke of Lithuania, lord and heir of Pomerania and Ruthenia. We make known by the content of this present to all whom it behooves to know, present and future, who shall gain knowledge of this writing. Among other works of our generosity, through which royal majesty exercises itself in showing bounty, we consider it the greatest service rendered to God Almighty when we direct our graces and benefits toward the state and benefit of ecclesiastical persons and willingly grant them royal favor, so that, supported by our benefits, they may the more zealously pray for the mercy of our Creator for the health and prosperity of us and our dearest sons Władysław and Casimir, as well as for the successful progress of the Kingdom, especially during this very expedition undertaken by our troops and the most just war against the Prussian Teutonic Knights; desiring indeed, inflamed by the fervor of piety, to enlarge the Metropolitan Church of Lviv for the glory and honor of God Almighty and to assist with the works of our piety, harboring a feeling of special grace toward the ten canons newly founded by us there, for the same number of ten present and future canons, our village of Wierzbiąż [Wierzbyaz] in the Ruthenian land and Lviv district, lying near Szczerzec, with the boundaries contained and described in our privilege of the location of the same village, or Wolyeszcze[?] to the judge, with rivers on both banks, namely the Dniester and the Szczerzec, with fields, meadows, lands, forests, oak groves, apiaries [voroz?], tributes without tithes, beech wood and acorns from the same forests and oak groves, pastures, hunting for all animals and fishing, lakes, fish weirs, mills and their revenues, and our unfree servants living there, as well as with all right, our lordship and ownership, reserving nothing at all for us and our successors in the same village of Wierzbiąż, except only two groschen of current coin from each hide to be paid on the feast of Saint Martin, we have recorded, we give, we generously donate by perpetual and irrevocable donation for all time and forever by the aforementioned ten present and future canons, to hold, possess, use the same village of Wierzbiąż and for peaceful possession for all time, together with customs and bridge tolls, which we add and appropriate for these same canons, so that the said village may enjoy all freedom of all benefits and revenues in peaceful possession. On this side of the Dniester river along up a certain river, starting from our village of Ujście [Vhie] up to our village of Rożana, and in width at a distance of one mile, all forests, thickets, and apiaries with meadows and all and individual benefits and all uses that are currently in these forests, thickets, and apiaries, and in the favorable course of time will be increased or settled with people by these same canons in the future, we add and assign to the said village and incorporate into possession forever. Provided, however, that if these capitular clergy have not been recorded by us to anyone else, furthermore, let it be permitted for these canons to build, make, and establish a pond and more within the heritage of the said village on the same rivers, not being hindered if, in any of our villages, that is Horożana [Horozenze] or others, any damage or obstacle were to arise from the very fact of flooding or raising of a dam. In testimony of which our seal has been appended to this present. Done in Konin on the day after Saint Margaret during the Prussian expedition, during our absence from it, in the Year of the Lord one thousand four hundred and thirty-three. In the presence of Lord Piotr Szafraniec, Voivode of Kraków, Domarat of Kobylany, Castellan of Biecz, Piotr of Magierów, Cupbearer of Kraków, Jan Craszka, tenant of Konin, Master Mikołaj Ostroróg [Osorzsci], our physician, and Mikołaj Drzemski, Custodian of Sandomierz, our secretary, and other credible witnesses. Given by the hands of the venerable father in Christ, Lord Jan Szafraniec, Bishop of Włocławek, Chancellor, and the venerable Władysław of Oporów, Doctor of Decrees, Dean of Kraków, Vice-Chancellor, sincerely beloved by us.
WE therefore, the above-named KING SIGISMUND AUGUST, graciously acceding to this same request, have deemed it right to approve, confirm, and ratify the said writing and everything contained therein with our authority, and by this our present writing we approve, confirm, and ratify, decreeing that this our writing and everything [...] contained therein shall obtain the force of due and perpetual durability. In testimony of this letter our seal has been appended.
Given in Piotrków at the General Sejm of the Kingdom on the twenty-seventh of May in the Year of the Lord one thousand five hundred and fifty-five, in the twenty-sixth year of our reign.
