Confirmation of the privileges of the shoemakers' guild in Lwów by King Sigismund II Augustus
King Sigismund II Augustus confirms and transumes four privileges granted by kings Casimir Jagiellon and Sigismund I to the shoemakers' guild of the city of Lwów. These concern the limitation of the number of shoemakers in the castle suburb to two masters, the prohibition of practicing the shoemaking craft in noble manors outside the city walls, the rules for the sale of hides by tanners, and the prohibition of purchasing hides before the city gates.

[f. 1r]
In the name of the Lord, amen. For the eternal memory of the matter. Everything human, by the will of higher judgments, is fluid and transient and subject to oblivion if it is not preserved for eternity and the memory of posterity by means of writing. Therefore, we, Sigismund Augustus, by the grace of God King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, and also Lord and Heir of the lands of Kraków, Sandomierz, Sieradz, Łęczyca, Kujawy, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, Chełmno, Elbląg, Pomerania, etc., announce by the tenor of this [document] to all whom it concerns, to all together and to each one individually, present and future, who shall receive knowledge of this [document], that there were presented before us four letters written on parchment, provided with the titles and hanging seals of the once most serene princes, lords Casimir, our grandfather, and Sigismund I, our parent, our most beloved predecessors, Kings of Poland, containing certain prerogatives granted by their majesties to the shoemakers and their guild in our city of Lwów. And some of our councilors entreated us in their name that we might deign to renew them because of their age and to approve, ratify, and confirm them with our royal authority. Their tenor is as follows:
Casimir, by the grace of God King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Lord and Heir of Ruthenia, Prussia, etc. We announce by the tenor of this [document] to all whom it concerns, together and to each one individually, who shall receive knowledge of this [document], that from a certain report of the prudent burghers of our city of Lwów we have learned that certain shoemakers arriving from other parts reside and stay under our Lwów castle outside the city, and there they practice clandestine trade and do things unusual for our city of Lwów, tending to the detriment and diminution of our royal revenues. Wishing therefore to undertake a suitable remedy for this matter, moved also by the requests of the shoemakers of the aforementioned city, by the unanimous advice of our councilors gathered with us at this assembly, we decide hereby that under the aforementioned castle outside the city of Lwów, according to the old custom long observed, only two shoemakers are to remain and reside. Therefore, to you, the magnificent Andrzej Odrowąż of Sprowa, Voivode and Starosta of Lwów, or others exercising [this office] in their time, sincerely beloved by us, we entrust and command that you maintain the aforementioned shoemakers of ours in Lwów in this liberty hereby granted and conceded to them, and you must absolutely maintain them, in the future not allowing under the aforementioned Lwów castle according to the old
[f. 1v]
custom more than only two shoemakers, as said above; this [document] is to be valid only until the pleasure of our will. Otherwise, do not dare to act under penalty of the loss of our favor. Given at the general assembly in Piotrków on the Thursday next after the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, in the Year of the Lord one thousand four hundred and fifty-eight. By the report of the venerable Jan of Brzezie, Doctor of Both Laws, Archdeacon of Gniezno, Vice-Chancellor of the Kingdom of Poland.
The tenor of the second letter: Casimir, by the grace of God King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Lord and Heir of Ruthenia, Prussia, etc. We announce by the tenor of this [document] to all whom it concerns, that because of complaints brought before us by the prudent shoemakers of our city of Lwów, our faithful and beloved, that from foreign parts certain shoemakers having arrived, live and reside on our upper Lwów castle, practicing there new and unusual trades to the detriment of our revenues and to the harm and burden of the said shoemakers. Wishing therefore to undertake a convenient remedy for this matter, we decide that the old, and also long-guarded and observed custom should be maintained, according to which, as they say, under our very castle outside the walls of the city of Lwów, no more than two shoemakers should reside and live. Therefore, to you, the noble Rafał of Jarosław, present or another acting in his time as Starosta of Lwów, we entrust and command, wishing absolutely, that from now on and in the future under our aforementioned Lwów castle you do not allow anyone else to stay and reside except for two shoemakers, and furthermore in the houses and estates of the nobility outside the city of Lwów you do not allow any people of the shoemaking craft to reside under any pretext to the harm and detriment of our aforementioned shoemakers, so that we may not be troubled by their further complaints. And do not act otherwise under penalty of the loss of our favor. In testimony of which our seal has been appended to this letter. Given in Gródek on the Tuesday next after Quasimodo Sunday [Easter], in the Year of the Lord one thousand four hundred and sixty-nine. By the report of the venerable Wojciech of Żychlin, Vice-Chancellor of the Kingdom of Poland.
The tenor of the third letter is as follows: Casimir, by the grace of God King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Lord and Heir of Ruthenia, Prussia, etc. We announce by the tenor of this [document] to all whom it concerns, that because of complaints brought before us by the shoemakers of our city of Lwów, that the tanners residing outside the city of Lwów itself, when selling hides to the same shoemakers for footwear and other goods needed by people, maintain and apply a different custom than that observed in other cities of our Kingdom, especially selling them worse and thinner hides, and sending the better ones outside the land for profit. Wishing therefore to put an end to such complaints, we want that upon the sale of the said hides by these Lwów tanners, such a manner and order be maintained as has long been observed in our city of Kraków. Therefore, to you, the noble Rafał of Jaro-
[f. 2r]
-sław, Starosta, and also the famous councilors of this our city of Lwów, present and others acting in their time, we entrust and command that after having been duly informed or having examined the manner, order, and arrangements mutually adopted and observed in Kraków between the Kraków shoemakers and tanners, you cause the same [order] to be strictly and inviolably observed and maintained by the aforementioned shoemakers and tanners of our city of Lwów under an appropriate monetary penalty, forcing and obliging both sides to observe the above. Under penalty of the loss of our favor. In testimony of which our seal has been appended to this letter. Given in Gródek on the Tuesday next after Quasimodo Sunday, in the Year of the Lord one thousand four hundred and sixty-nine. By the report of the venerable Wojciech of Żychlin, Vice-Chancellor of the Kingdom of Poland.
The tenor of the last letter is as follows: SIGISMUND, by the grace of God King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, and also Lord and Heir of the lands of Kraków, Sandomierz, Sieradz, Łęczyca, Kujawy, Ruthenia, Prussia, Chełmno, and Elbląg, Pomerania, etc. We announce by the tenor of this [document] to all whom it concerns, together and to each one individually, present and future, who shall receive knowledge of this [document]. Since when we were successfully staying in this place, the shoemakers of our city of Lwów appeared before our face and complained heavily that in the Lwów suburb there are many shoemakers who, acting outside the guild, practice the craft, by which they burden them not a little. They entreated us therefore humbly that we might deign to provide them with a convenient remedy in this matter. And since the just requests of subjects should not be rejected by the ruler, we want and decide that the magnificent Stanisław of Chodecz, Marshal of our Kingdom and Starosta of Lwów, should see to it and cause that from now on in the suburbs outside the guild no more shoemakers dare to practice the shoemaking craft, except for those two masters who are accustomed to work at the castle. Furthermore, the aforementioned Lwów shoemakers also complained as if there were very few tanners in this city, and many are the craftsmen working in leather, therefore they asked that we might deign to proclaim a free market for the sale and purchase of dressed leather, from wherever and whenever it might be brought. We, not wishing that our subjects – nobility and burghers – should bear burdens in such a great lack of leather, decide that in every month one day should be free for all to sell and buy dressed leather in this our city of Lwów, and that day will be the day of the long-established market. This regulation about the free market is to have binding force only until our pleasure. Furthermore, the aforementioned shoemakers complained as if Christian, Ruthenian, Armenian, and Jewish merchants were accustomed to go out before the city gates and onto the streets and buy up hides from newcomers, so that they cannot reach the hands of shoemakers and other craftsmen; wishing therefore to take care of the benefit of our aforementioned subjects, we decide and order that from now on no merchant
[f. 2v]
or their servants, whether it be a Christian, Ruthenian, Armenian, or Jewish merchant, dare to go outside the city to the fields and roads and buy such hides from arriving people, small or large, under penalty of forfeiture of the item. For the same reason, we decide and order that Christian, Ruthenian, Armenian, and Jewish merchants, of whatever status and condition they might be, secretly or openly do not dare to buy from newcomers fewer than ten large or small hides, likewise under penalty of forfeiture of the same hides. Therefore, to you, the magnificent Stanisław of Chodecz, Grand Marshal of our Kingdom, Starosta of Lwów, and also the famous Mayor and councilors of our city of Lwów, we entrust, hereby commanding, that you maintain the aforementioned shoemakers according to this our regulation in whole and in every part and strive to maintain it from now on until our pleasure. In testimony of which our seal has been appended to this [document]. Done and given in our city of Lwów on the Wednesday next after the feast of Saint Luke the Evangelist, in the Year of the Lord one thousand five hundred and twenty-four, and of our reign the eighteenth year. Krzysztof of Szydłowiec, Voivode and Starosta of Kraków and Chancellor of the Kingdom of Poland. By the report of the magnificent Krzysztof of Szydłowiec, Voivode and General Starosta of Kraków and Chancellor of the Kingdom of Poland.
We therefore, the above-named King SIGISMUND Augustus, graciously acceding to the request of our aforementioned councilors made to us in the name of the said Lwów shoemakers and considering that the letters included here are intact, whole, undamaged, uncancelled, and free from any defect and suspicion, have deemed it necessary to renew them and to approve, ratify, and confirm them with our royal authority, just as we hereby renew, ratify, approve, and confirm them in all and individual their points, clauses, conditions, and articles, deciding that everything and individually, what is contained in them, shall have constant force by means of this document. In testimony of which our seal has been appended to this [document]. Done and given in Piotrków at the general assembly of the Kingdom on the Thursday before the feast of Saint Thomas the Apostle, that is the fifteenth day of the month of December, in the Year of the Lord one thousand five hundred and fifty-eight, and of our reign the twenty-ninth year.
