[Decorative inscription at the top:] PIUS [BISHOP]
Pius, Bishop, Servant of the Servants of God, to our beloved son Paweł, Archbishop-elect of Lviv, greetings and apostolic blessing.
Since we have recently decided to provide for the Church of Lviv, then deprived of the comfort of a shepherd due to the death of the late Feliks, formerly Archbishop of Lviv, who died outside the Roman Curia, by appointing your person—dear to us and our brothers due to the requirements of your merits—with the counsel of these same brothers and by apostolic authority, establishing you as its archbishop and shepherd, as is more fully contained in our letters drawn up regarding this; and subsequently, the pallium, being the sign of the fullness of the pontifical office, was requested from us in your name by our beloved son Jerzy Tylicz, a cleric of the Diocese of Przemyśl, with the zeal due to this: We, acceding to your requests, have decided to send this same pallium, taken from the body of blessed Peter, through the aforementioned messenger, so that it may be conferred upon you by our venerable brothers, the Bishops of Kraków and Przemyśl, such that these same bishops or one of them shall confer it upon you after you have received episcopal consecration, and shall receive from you, in our name and in the name of the Roman Church, the due and customary oath of fidelity according to the formula which we send to them enclosed under our bull. You shall use it within the aforementioned Church of Lviv only on those days which are explicitly specified in its privileges. Therefore, so that the sign may not differ from what it signifies, but that what you wear outwardly you may preserve inwardly in your mind, we diligently admonish and exhort your Prudence, commanding you by apostolic letter, that you strive with the help of the Lord, who gives rewards and generously distributes gifts, to preserve humility and justice—for they guard their servant and exalt him—and that you, with God's help, carefully see to the spiritual and temporal growth of the aforementioned Church of Lviv, your bride. Given in Rome at St. Mark's, in the year of the Lord's Incarnation one thousand five hundred and sixty-one, on the fifth day before the Kalends of July [June 27, 1561], in the second year of our pontificate.

Reading notes
Bull of Pope Pius IV regarding the granting of the pallium to the Archbishop of Lviv, Paweł Tarło (after the death of Feliks Ligęza), via the envoy Jerzy Tylicz (Ticinus); the pallium is to be conferred by the Bishop of Kraków or Przemyśl after receiving the oath of fidelity. Condition is very good, with losses along the folds (several holes along the vertical fold). A lead bull of Pope Pius IV is attached to the document on the original hemp cord.
