SIGISMUND AUGUSTUS, BY THE GRACE OF GOD King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia etc., lord and heir. We hereby announce by this our letter to all whom it may concern: There have been submitted to us on behalf of Our City of Lwów two parchment documents, the first of which was a declaration by certain commissioners appointed by the most illustrious ruler of old, Lord Władysław, King of Poland, our great-grandfather, regarding the boundaries between our aforementioned city of Lwów and the village of Zubrza demarcated by them, bearing the suspended seals of said commissioners. The second contained a certain agreement between the same city of Lwów and the late well-born Dzierżysław Wilczek, chamberlain of Lwów, regarding the free use of the forests of the village of Zubrza and the Sychów estate of the same Dzierżysław the chamberlain by the burghers of Lwów and their subjects, granted by the same Dzierżysław for a certain time; and conversely, the use of the forests of the city of Lwów by the subjects of the said Dzierżysław, permitted in the same manner for a certain time, with the suspended seal of the late illustrious Piotr Myszkowski of Przeciszów, voivode of Bełz and general starosta of the Ruthenian lands, as an arbiter appointed by the aforementioned parties. Therefore, a request was made to us on behalf of these Lwów burghers that we might deign to approve and confirm both those letters with our royal authority. The wording of the first of them word for word is as follows: WE, IWO otherwise Iwan, castellan of Śrem, general starosta of Ruthenia, Spytko of Tarnów, Piotr Mszczujowic of Charamurowice, cupbearer of Sandomierz, Jan Głuth of Wisznica [Wiszniany], boundary markers and surveyors specially appointed by the illustrious prince and lord, namely Lord Władysław, by the grace of God King of Poland, our most gracious lord, [for the demarcation] between the city of Lwów and the villages of Hanczeldis and Zobilium [Zubrza], lying on all sides around the city of Lwów, by the wording of this document announce to all whom it behooves, both present and future, who shall receive knowledge of this: That we have demarcated and settled the disputes between the city of Lwów and the village of Zubrza, with the preservation of legal order, as lasting in perpetuity, erecting signs, which are commonly called mounds, confirming the above in accordance with the general commission entrusted to us, just as we wish it to be inscribed herein for better certainty. In witness whereof our seals are appended hereto. Given in Lwów on the nearest Thursday after the feast of St. Bartholomew the Apostle, in the Year of Our Lord one thousand four hundred and seventeen. In the presence of the worthy lords mentioned above, Wojsław Bogdanowicz of Iwojczyce, Jan Gołuchowski and many other credible persons present in large numbers. And the wording of the second letter word for word is as follows: WE, Piotr Myszkowski of Brzica [Przeciszów], voivode of Bełz and general starosta of the Ruthenian lands. We announce by the wording of this document to all whom it behooves, how between the well-born Dzierżysław Wilczek of Boczów, chamberlain of Lwów on one side, and the famous councilors of the city of Lwów on the other side, certain disputes and disagreements arose regarding the boundaries between the village of Zubrza and the Sychów estate of the said Dzierżysław Wilczek and the city of Lwów. Indeed, distressed that disagreement and strife might not increase between them on both sides, we went out to see what would be just for both parties, where Dzierżysław himself testified before us all and to each one individually those aforementioned [signs], commonly called mounds, and furthermore with four suspended seals. Finally, the councilors on the same day also led us to certain signs, according to which they claimed that it belonged to them, which they showed us. Having considered, therefore, that no reconciliation and agreement could arise on that time from both sides, we postponed the matter to another time, so that they might meet together at the Lwów castle, and the time of a certain arrival from both sides was designated[?]. When, however, the time came, they strove to conclude an agreement between themselves, which they could not conclude, yet they urged the said Dzierżysław, asking that for the people of the city of Lwów there be free and safe access to the forests of the same estate of Zubrza and Sychów. He also wanted the people of Dzierżysław Wilczek himself to pass freely and safely to the forests of the city of Lwów in a similar manner. Therefore, the aforementioned Dzierżysław Wilczek, yielding to the humble request of the councilors and the said city, and in order to prevent in any part destruction and devastation, agreed to their desire and request, allowing the same councilors free and safe access together with their subjects to the said forests of the village of Zubrza and the Sychów estate, for a time until an agreement, having force from the date of this document, during which three friends should conclude a better agreement between them. Under such an attached condition, however, that the boundaries of Dzierżysław Wilczek himself and the privileges to these goods more broadly possessed should not be hindered or disparaged in any way, but should remain in the same power, just as we want them to remain now. No less also, no obstacle should stand in the way of the letters of the councilors themselves, to which they referred regarding the said signs or rights. But the people and subjects of the councilors themselves let them not dare to enter those goods of Zubrza and Sychów of Dzierżysław Wilczek himself in any other way than those designated by the councilors themselves and provided with the usual seal. Done and given at the Lower Castle in Lwów on the nearest Friday before the Nativity of Mary, in the Year of Our Lord one thousand four hundred and ninety-nine, under our seal appended for the faith and testimony of this. WE therefore, SIGISMUND AUGUSTUS, the king named above, yielding graciously to this request, have approved and confirmed both submitted letters in all their points, clauses, and conditions with our royal authority, just as we approve and confirm them by this our letter, deciding that they should obtain the force of due permanence. In testimony of this letter, to which our seal has been appended. Given in Lublin at the general crown sejm, on Monday after Palm Sunday, in the Year of Our Lord one thousand five hundred and sixty-nine, and the forty-fourth of our reign.
