Privilege of King Sigismund II Augustus for Lwów regarding the construction of bread stalls
King Sigismund II Augustus grants the burghers and bakers of Lwów permission to build bread stalls and trade bread in perpetuity, in order to provide relief to the city following a fire. The monarch allocates the rental income from these stalls to the reconstruction of city fortifications and public buildings, ordering the authorities to account for the funds annually before the commonalty.

[S][igismund Augustus] by the grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, etc., Lord and Heir. We hereby announce by this our letter to all and each person concerned: That we, graciously acceding to the intercession of some of our advisors, diligently made and brought before us on behalf of the burghers of Lwów, and at the same time wishing, out of our special grace and benevolence, to compensate and alleviate the damages they have recently suffered due to a fire, have given and permitted them, as we hereby give, permit, and endow them with full and complete power to erect and build benches or stalls, commonly called bread stalls, whether in the Lwów market square or in any other place that seems more convenient to them, in which benches the bakers and inhabitants of the said city shall have the free ability to display and sell rye bread for all time. And to show even more abundant grace toward these our burghers of Lwów, by our certain knowledge and special grace, we give, allocate, and grant in perpetuity the annual rent derived from these benches or stalls to the aforementioned burghers of Lwów for the strengthening and repair of public buildings or for any other use that shall be deemed more beneficial and convenient by them, in view of the outlays and costs incurred for the construction of these benches or stalls. Provided, however, under this law and condition, that the mayor and councilors of the said city shall be obliged and bound every year to render an account to the commonalty of Lwów of the income and expenditures of this aforementioned rent, according to ancient custom and established practice. In witness whereof, our seal has been appended hereto. Given in Warsaw, on the twentieth day of the month of June, in the Year of Our Lord one thousand five hundred and seventy-one, and in the forty-second year of our reign.

Document prepared on parchment in Latin. A royal seal of Sigismund II Augustus is attached to the document on a parchment strip in a natural wax bowl with an impression in red wax (partially crumbled). The text uses the Polish term for bread stalls: 'uulgo chlebne yathkij', on the back (verso) the regest clarifies: 'rzanego chleba' (rye bread, while the archival description incorrectly stated wheat bread: Lat. panis siliginaceus is often confused, in 16th-century Polish translated here as rye).
