STEPHAN By the grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, Kiev, Volhynia, Podlachia, Livonia etc., and also Prince of Transylvania. We make known by this our letter to all and each one whom it may concern and who shall have knowledge of this, that there has been presented and shown before us by the renowned Szymon Hannel, our Lviv burgher, a document written on parchment by the late Sigismund, of that name the First, King of Poland, our most glorious predecessor, sealed with the greater crown seal and signed by Krzysztof of Szydłowiec, Crown Chancellor; and although by some chance worn in some places, it is nevertheless free from all evil suspicions. And at the same time, we were requested by the same Szymon Hannel that we might deign to renew, approve, and confirm it. Its literal wording was as follows: IN THE NAME OF THE LORD, AMEN. For an eternal memory of the matter. We, Sigismund, by the grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, and also Lord and Heir of the lands of Kraków, Sandomierz, Sieradz, Łęczyca, Kuyavia, Ruthenia, Prussia, the land of Chełmno, Elbląg, Pomerania etc. We make manifest by the wording of this [document] to all and each one whom it serves, present and future, who shall have knowledge of this: how the renowned Marcin Hannel, our Lviv burgher, faithful and beloved, having appeared personally before us, submitted that although he possessed a document and privilege for the goods and grange called Hołowsko, granted and confirmed to his ancestors by the most serene ruler, Lord Władysław, of holy memory King of Poland, our predecessor, it was lost by some random chance. Nevertheless, he presented before us a copy of the same privilege, which we ordered to be read in our presence. And he humbly asked us that we might deign to confirm, approve, and ratify this privilege granted for the aforementioned Hołowsko goods – in whose peaceful possession he himself remains, and his ancestors remained by virtue of that privilege. The wording of that very privilege follows and is as follows: IN THE NAME OF THE LORD, AMEN. For an eternal memory of the matter. Lest the error of forgetfulness should in the future cause harm to matters occurring in time, the lofty councils of kings and princes have decided to perpetuate them with signs of writing and the annotation of witnesses. Therefore we, WŁADYSŁAW, by the grace of God, King of Poland, and also of the lands of Kraków, Sandomierz, Sieradz, Łęczyca, Kuyavia, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Lord and Heir of Pomerania and Ruthenia, make known by the wording of this [document] to all whom it serves, present and future, who shall have knowledge of this: how on the part of the renowned Janusz the interpreter, called the collector of our hearth taxes and Lviv burgher, our faithful and beloved, a constant and humble request was submitted to our Majesty containing [a wish] that we might deign to ratify, confirm, endow with grace, renew, and approve the writing written below, that is, of the jurors of the city of Lviv, and the contents contained therein. The literal wording of this writing written below follows and is as follows: WE, THE JURORS of the city of Lviv, namely Jan Scober, Marcin Ziwerth, Jan Kripendorff, Janusz Czerkisz, Mikołaj Steiner, and Franciszek Kuśnierz, confess by the wording of this [writing] to all whom it serves, present and future, who shall have knowledge of this: how before the office and face of our open court, the honest Katarzyna, legitimate daughter of the late renowned Mikołaj Cymerman, our fellow citizen, and lawful wife of the renowned Janusz the interpreter, then scribe and colleague [official] of our city of Lviv, having appeared personally, being of mature age and discernment, neither forced nor coerced, nor misled by any error or deceit, but sound in mind and body, after mature deliberation and by the special advice of her relatives, all and individual goods of hers, paternal and maternal, in any way concerning her, however hereditary, as well as movable and immovable, situated in the city and outside the city, and in particular the grange or estate called Hołowsko, with all right, jurisdiction, and ownership, peasants, inhabitants, manors, bakeries, mill, and all other and individual benefits, fruits, rents, annuities, incomes, fields, meadows, arable lands, pastures, forests, woods, groves, oak forests, thickets, brushwood, hunts, fowl, apiaries, fish ponds, fishing, streams, brooks, mills and their benefits, appurtenances [In the margin: Mills.], attachments, connections, extensions, and all incomes and uses that are now there and may arise in the future, and by any foresight may be arranged and managed there by the same Janusz, his children, and lawful successors – she gave, donated, legally and justly ceded, and resigned to the aforementioned Janusz the interpreter, her lawful husband, for all time. Establishing the said Janusz, that Katarzyna, his wife, and his children and lawful successors – and no one else, excluding her relatives and other [claimants] to the said movable and immovable goods, and in particular to the said grange or estate Hołowsko, peasants, inhabitants, manors, mills, ponds, and other benefits expressed above, just as they have long been separated and bounded in their boundaries, borders, and boundary markers along, across, and around the perimeter – as the true lord, heir, and perpetual possessor. Which all and individual goods described above and the said grange or estate Hołowsko together with appurtenances, the same Janusz, his heirs, and legal successors shall hold, have, use, and peacefully possess for all time and forever, and also sell, exchange, donate, pledge, and turn to use as they see fit and more useful, without any opposition or obstacle on the part of the said relatives and in-laws of the mentioned Katarzyna. In the presence of the renowned Jan Czerkisz, then mayor, Konrad Rippen, Jan of Styna, Albert Bucholcz, Piotr Kuśnierz, and Michał Kowal, then councilors of our said city. In testimony of which, the seal of our juror office was attached to this [document] by our certain knowledge. Done and given on Wednesday, on the very court day of the Holy Martyrs Felix and Adauctus, in the year of our Lord one thousand four hundred and thirteen. WE THEREFORE, graciously acceding to these requests of that Janusz, our collector, just and consistent with reason, ratify, confirm, endow with grace, approve, and renew the above-written document of the said jurors and its content in all its points, judgments, conditions, articles, and clauses by the innate grace of our Majesty, deciding that it has the force of lasting eternity. And recognizing the mentioned Janusz the collector and his legal successors as the true lord, heir, and perpetual possessor of the said movable and immovable goods and the grange or estate Hołowsko together with all and individual [parts] described above; considering also the manifold and fruitful services of the same Janusz, our said collector, by which he has pleased us and will be able to please us, and he and his lawful descendants will bear witness to fidelity with increased zeal in the future; for this reason, wishing to comfort him with a special privilege of our graces, we give, donate, record, and graciously grant for all time and forever to him and his legal successors a certain large wasteland situated above the stream called Brzuchowice, adjacent and close to his said grange Hołowsko, and stretching as far as another stream Dziesień, which flows into the river Rokitna, and together with this one meadow in Tarnawa, which was once possessed by Żurko the Ruthenian, together with another meadow called Dolina, whose width and length will reach as far as the Southern [or: towards the swamp]; so that the said wasteland Brzuchowice and the mentioned meadows with all right, dominion, and ownership, as well as all incomes, fields, arable lands, meadows, pastures, forests, woods, groves, thickets, apiaries, hunts, fish ponds, fishing, streams, lakes, which are now and will arise in the future in the said wasteland Brzuchowice and in the streams in any way, may be held, possessed, used, and peacefully kept for all time and sold, pledged, exchanged, and turned to use, as they see fit and more useful, by the said Janusz the collector, his children, and lawful successors. In testimony of which, our seal was attached to this document. Done in Kraków on Thursday after Ash Wednesday, in the year of our Lord one thousand four hundred and twenty-four. In the presence of the venerable fathers in Christ, lords Wojciech of Gniezno, Jan of Lviv, archbishops; Zbigniew of Kraków, Jan of Włocławek, and Andrzej of Poznań, bishops of the churches; the magnificent and valiant Krystyn of Ostrów, castellan, Jan of Tarnów, voivode of Kraków, and many other credible witnesses. Given by the hands of the venerable Jan, dean of Kraków, chancellor of the Kingdom of Poland, and Stanisław Ciołek, cantor of Kraków, vice-chancellor of the same Kingdom of Poland, sincerely beloved by us. From the report of the said lord Jan, dean of Kraków, chancellor of the Kingdom of Poland. WE THEREFORE, ZYGMUNT the King, having obtained testimony from the venerable father in Christ, lord Maciej of Drzewica, bishop of Włocławek, and the magnificent Otto of Chodecz, general voivode of Ruthenia, at that time starosta of Halicz, Śniatyn, and Kołomyja, and Stanisław of Chodecz, marshal of our Kingdom and starosta of Lviv, sincerely beloved by us, who knew with all certainty about that privilege – we have deemed the same said writings inscribed above and all and individual contents contained in them, just as set forth above, granted for such goods and grange Hołowsko, in whose peaceful possession the mentioned Marcin remains, worthy of approval, ratification, and confirmation by our certain knowledge and special royal grace and by the intercession of some of our advisors, and we approve, ratify, and confirm them by these presents. Deciding by the wording of this [document] that they have the force of due and perpetual durability. In testimony of which, our seal was attached to this [writing]. Relation of the same magnificent Krzysztof of Szydłowiec, voivode and general starosta of Kraków and chancellor of the Kingdom of Poland. Krzysztof of Szydłowiec, voivode of Kraków and chancellor of the Kingdom of Poland [autograph]. WE THEREFORE, graciously acceding to the mentioned request submitted to us by Szymon Hannel, we have deemed the above-written documents in all their points, clauses, articles, and conditions, as far as common laws allow – if there is a need to use them – worthy of approval and confirmation by our royal authority; as we approve and confirm them by this our letter and decide that they should forever retain their force and due weight. In faith of which, we have signed this letter with our own hand and ordered it to be provided with the seal of our Kingdom. Reading notes

Parchment document preserved in good condition; the letters of the incipit 'STEPHANVS' are calligraphed in Renaissance majuscule, the initial 'S' with rich flourishing and floral motifs. The crown seal (Eagle in a heraldic shield surrounded by regional coats of arms) is impressed in red wax in a wax bowl, suspended on a braided silk cord (in red, navy blue, and golden colors). The document is a multiple transumpt: Stefan Batory (1578) transumes the privilege of Sigismund I the Old (from July 13, 1521, Kraków), which in turn confirms the privilege of Władysław Jagiełło (from March 9, 1424, Kraków; Thursday after Ash Wednesday), which contains a transumpt of the document of the Lviv jurors (from August 30, 1413, Lviv; Wednesday, feast of St. Felix and Adauctus/Auctus). The title of the archival card contains a distorted term 'Толмачеві Іванові' (erroneous interpretation of the Latin 'Januszkone interpreti' as 'Ivan').
