Confirmation by King Sigismund III of a land grant in Lviv to Zygmunt Poradowski

[In the header in decorative majuscule:] SIGISMUND THE THIRD by the grace of God King of Poland and designated [King] of Sweden, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, Livonia etc. We hereby announce by this our letter to all and each individually whom it concerns: there has been presented to us the document written below, provided with the title and seal of the illustrious Mikołaj Herburt of Fulsztyn, Castellan of Halych and our Starosta of Lviv, and signed with his own hand, whole, intact and unblemished, raising no suspicion, in which the said Starosta of Lviv granted a marshy, abandoned and uncultivated plot, located in the Lviv Suburb, subject to his starosta jurisdiction, to the noble Zygmunt Poradowski for drainage for the purpose of erecting buildings, with the reservation of the starosta rent. And we were requested on behalf of the said Zygmunt Poradowski that we might deign to approve and confirm this document with our royal authority. The content of which document follows word for word as follows: Mikołaj Herburt of Fulsztyn, Castellan of Halych and Lviv, General Starosta of the Ruthenian lands. We announce by the wording of this letter, to whom it is due, to all and each individually, present and future, who shall receive knowledge of this: that we, desiring to increase the benefits and revenues of the estates of His Most Serene Royal Majesty and the Republic of our Lviv starosta, have given and do give forever to the noble Zygmunt Poradowski and his lawful successors a marshy and swampy plot, lying fallow without any benefit or profit, situated in the Lviv Suburb called Kraków, subject to our starosta jurisdiction – on one side by the Pełtew River, and on the other side by the land of the St. Stanislaus hospital, which land begins from the paved road leading towards Janów and stretches as far as the city gardens and lands – for his every need and use, at his own expense from the raw root to be drained and developed and for the erection of buildings, or to be turned to any benefits and revenues that he himself and his successors deem better and more convenient. In such a way, however, that he himself or his successors for all time, every year on the feast of Saint Martin, shall be obliged and shall remain obliged together with his successors to pay thirty groszy as rent to us, and later to the Starostas of Lviv for the benefit of the treasury of His Most Serene Royal Majesty. After the payment of the said rent, the said Zygmunt Poradowski and his successors shall be forever free and exempt from all services, burdens and any labor, as well as fees. So indeed, that after paying this rent, neither to His Most Serene Royal Majesty, nor to us, nor to the Starostas later in office, shall he be obliged to bear any burden or fee together with his successors. Deciding that the said Zygmunt Poradowski together with his offspring is to hold and perpetually use and possess the mentioned goods, to give away, donate, sell and turn to any better and more useful benefits of his for all time. Having regard to the efforts and expenses of the said Zygmunt Poradowski, as well as to the fact that the mentioned land will not be easily and in a short time able to be drained and brought to use with significant cost, we hereby release the said Zygmunt Poradowski and his successors from paying the mentioned rent from now until the expiration of six years. After the expiration of this time, in accordance with what was written above, he shall pay and remain obliged to pay the said rent to the Lviv castle in the amount of thirty groszy together with his successors. In testimony of which our seal has been pressed to this, and we have signed this with our own hand. Given in Lviv, on the sixteenth day of the month of July, in the year of our Lord one thousand five hundred and eighty-six. The same who signed above with his own hand. We therefore, SIGISMUND THE THIRD KING, have deemed the above worthy of confirmation and hereby confirm it and wish that it should have and retain the power and authority of due permanence, as far as it is entitled by law.
