Confirmation of the privileges of the Lviv clothiers' guild by King Sigismund III Vasa
King Sigismund III Vasa confirms the privileges of the cloth cutters' guild in Lviv, transuming the diploma of Stephen Báthory from 1578 (containing the privilege of Sigismund I from 1541 regarding the exclusive right to retail cloth by the ell) and the act of the Lviv city council from 1594 establishing the clothiers' brotherhood.

SIGISMUND
Third, by the grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, Livonia, etc., and also hereditary King of the Swedes, Goths, and Vandals. We hereby announce by this our letter to all and each person concerned, that there have been presented before us two parchment letters of privilege: one, by which our most serene predecessor King Stephen confirmed certain prerogatives to the Lviv cloth cutters, graciously granted and conceded by our predecessors, signed by the hand of the same Lord King Stephen and strengthened with the hanging greater seal of the chancellery; and the second, by which the magistrate of the city of Lviv founded the guild of the same cloth cutters, strengthened with the hanging council seal, sound, intact, and free from any defect of suspicion. And it was supplicated to us in the name of the same guild that we might deign to approve, confirm, and ratify them with our royal authority. The wording of which, word for word, follows in this manner:
STEPHEN, by the grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, Livonia, Volhynia, Podlachia, Livonia, etc., and also Prince of Transylvania. We announce by this our letter to all and each person who shall have knowledge of this, that there has been presented and shown before us by the envoys of our city of Lviv in the name of the cloth cutters of our same city, the letter of Lord Sigismund, of that name the First, King, our most glorious predecessor, written on a parchment sheet, strengthened with the hanging of the greater crown seal and the signature of Samuel, Bishop of Kraków and Chancellor of the Kingdom of Poland, intact and free from any defect and evil suspicion. And it was supplicated to us by the same envoys that we might deign to approve and confirm this same letter and everything contained therein with our royal authority. The wording of which was as follows:
IN THE NAME OF THE LORD, AMEN. For the eternal memory of the matter. Since of mortal affairs nothing is more fleeting than memory itself, therefore, so that what happens in time may not perish, the foresight of human reason has invented a way to entrust such things to monuments of writing for future memory. Therefore we, SIGISMUND, by the grace of God, King of Poland, Supreme Duke of Lithuania, and also Lord and Heir of the lands of Kraków, Sandomierz, Sieradz, Kuyavia, Łęczyca, Chełmno, Elbląg, Pomerania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, etc., announce by the wording of this present to all and each person, present and future, who shall have knowledge of this, that when the honest cloth cutters of our city of Lviv represented to us that their privileges, by the turn of fate, were destroyed by the severity of fire during the burning of a significant part of the city, in which it was clearly written that no one except them in the city of Lviv may cut cloth of any kind and sell it by the ell, for which reason they pay a certain rent to the Lviv castle every year. Now, however, many people, without the authorization of the city, to their detriment dare to openly and secretly cut all kinds of cloth by the ell and sell it, with no small harm and prejudice to the same cloth cutters of our city of Lviv. Wherefore, on their part, we were humbly asked to deign to provide for those clothiers, who are obliged to pay such rents and burdens to the Lviv castle on our behalf, with the same royal benevolence, so that no other merchant or shopkeeper, local or visitor, of whatever status and condition, faith or rite they may be, besides the cloth cutters of the city themselves, shall dare to cut or in any way shear cloth of any kind and material to the detriment and loss of these Lviv clothiers by the ell or in parts. We, therefore, wishing to show grace to these clothiers out of our royal benevolence and to give them this freedom for their merits [...], have deemed it appropriate to grant and bestow, as we do grant and confirm forever. Providing that no person, of whatever status and condition they may be, to the detriment and prejudice of these clothiers of our said city of Lviv, in the city and outside the city of Lviv, under any jurisdiction, shall dare to cut or sell cloth of any kind and material, openly or secretly, by the bolt or in parts, to the detriment and prejudice of these Lviv cloth cutters, under penalty of seizure and loss of such cloth. Of which we want half to fall to these clothiers, and half to the office by which they were supported in the seizure of such cloth. Therefore, to you, the well-born Mikołaj Odnowski of Fulsztyn, Castellan of Przemyśl and at that time Starosta, and in his absence the Deputy Starosta, as well as the Mayor and Councilors of the city of Lviv, we command by these presents that when called by these Lviv clothiers to seize such of their spoilers, who cut and sell such cloth by the ell to their detriment, you shall provide them with due assistance and guard and defend them in such matters by virtue of your office and our royal grace, proceeding no otherwise. In witness and testimony of which our seal has been appended to this. Given in Kraków on Maundy Thursday in the year of our Lord one thousand five hundred and forty-first, and of our reign the forty-first. In the presence of the most reverend and illustrious fathers in Christ, the lords Mikołaj, Archbishop of Gniezno, Legate born and Primate, Samuel Maciejowski, Bishop of Kraków and Chancellor of the Kingdom, Benedykt Izbieński of Poznań, Andrzej Czbrzedowski [Zebrzydowski] of Włocławek, Andrzej Zebrzydowski of Płock, Bishops; as well as the illustrious and well-born Piotr Kmita, Voivode and Starosta of Kraków, Grand Marshal of our Kingdom and Starosta of Przemyśl, Spiš, etc., Jan, Count of Tarnów, of Sandomierz, Marshal of our court and Starosta of Lublin and Lelów, Stanisław of Łask, Voivode of Sieradz, Jan Dzierzgowski, Starosta of Masovia and Warsaw, Mikołaj of Wola, of Sandomierz, Spytek Jordan of Kraków, Zygmunt Kostka of Gdańsk, Starosta of Czchów, Łomża, and Wizna, Jerzy Jeżewski, Castellan of Warsaw, Walenty Dębieński, Jakub Uchański, Dean of Płock and Archdeacon of Poznań, Referendaries of our court, Andrzej Czarnkowski, Provost of Gniezno, Filip Padniewski, Cantor of Kraków, Stanisław Hozjusz, Doctor of both laws, Piotr Porębski, Official of Radom, Secretaries of our Kingdom, Marcin Wolski, Treasurer of our court, Head of our chamberlains, Standard-bearer and Burgrave of Kraków, Achacy of Czersk, Starosta of Złoczów, Augustyn Kotwicz, Head of our stables, and other dignitaries and officials of ours, sincerely and faithfully dear to us, credible witnesses to the above. Given by the hands of the most reverend father in Christ, Lord Samuel Maciejowski, Bishop of Kraków, Chancellor of the Kingdom of Poland. [By own hand:] Samuel, Bishop of Kraków and Chancellor of the Kingdom of Poland.
We, therefore, graciously acceding to that request brought to us by the same envoys of our city of Lviv, have deemed the above-written letter worthy of approval and confirmation in all its points, clauses, articles, and conditions, as far as the considerations of common law allow, as indeed we approve and confirm by this our writing, and we decree that it should retain its due and proper force and weight. In witness of which we have signed this writing with our hand and ordered it to be strengthened with the seal of our Kingdom. Given in Kraków on the twenty-first day of the month of October in the year of our Lord one thousand five hundred and seventy-eight, and of our reign the third year.
The second letter reads word for word as follows:
COUNCILORS of the city of Lviv, superiors of the inhabitants of the city of Lviv by the authority of the Most Serene Royal Majesty, our most gracious lord. We announce by the wording of this, that since the prosperity of the city depends primarily on the fact that whatever customs and laws were established at the beginning, these should be kept and applied as strictly as possible; and since this duty rests primarily on the magistrates themselves, therefore when the efforts of private citizens tend towards this and everyone supports the public concern from their side, we consider this an easier and safer way to support the public good; for if they perceive such a disposition of their [citizens], they should not only not restrain it, but further support and encourage it, and kindly support their efforts and confirm them with their favor. Therefore, we too, when our younger Catholic citizens, who are engaged in the business of cutting and selling cloth, represented to us that they suffer great damages and obstacles from people partly Jews and schismatics, partly others, to whom this is not permitted by law and ancient custom, and fear the abuse of privileges and the disturbance of urban order in the wake of this, and called for our faith [help], so that we, in accordance with what we are obliged to do for the support and observance of the laws, might remedy their losses and oppose our authority to groundless grievances against the public utility – we could not but accede to the wishes of these, granting all our favor, grace, and help to those who trust well, wishing, as far as in our power, to preserve the peace of the city and mindful of their protection from harm. Therefore, as by virtue of the care of our office we strive by all means for the prosperity of the city, so that what concerns their business may be recommended with diligence and care for participation with us; and so that they may do this more conveniently, they deemed it appropriate to establish an assembly among themselves, which will elect [elders] of its body and present them to us for approval, having the power to convene a meeting and deliberate with the remaining brothers, only for this purpose, not another, so that they may more conveniently deliberate on their duties in case of need with unanimous consent, to gather the privileges strengthened by the ancestors by the authority of this city [...] we give and grant to the same body, as by this authorization we have given and give them permission [...] to restrain those harming the cloth cutters openly and secretly, and the castle starosta office [...] by the edict and authority of the Most Serene Royal Majesty, our most gracious lord, according to the privileges of the mentioned Polish kings, to bring help to the same cloth cutters' guild, and the same body of cloth cutters will have the possibility of confirming this assembly by the lord of the city, as often as against this kind of [...] from the Most Serene Royal Majesty, our most gracious lord, most humbly to obtain. In witness of all of which our seal has been appended to this. Done and given in Lviv on the Monday before the feast of Saint Thomas the Apostle next, in the year of our Lord one thousand five hundred and ninety-four.
Graciously acceding to which request, we, SIGISMUND BY THE GRACE OF GOD KING named above, have deemed the above-written letters as true in all their points, clauses, articles, conditions, and individual and all contents worthy of recognition, confirmation, and ratification, as indeed, as far as the considerations of common law and proven custom allow, we approve, confirm, and ratify, and we want them to have the force of due permanence and to be observed, kept, and executed by all whom it concerns, just as they were [by] the above-written letters of privilege [...]. In witness of which we have ordered this writing signed by our hand to be sealed with the seal of the Kingdom. Given in Kraków at the general diet of our Kingdom on the seventeenth day of the month of March in the year of our Lord one thousand five hundred and ninety-five, of our reign in Poland the eighth, and in Sweden the second.
