SIGISMUND Third, by the grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, Livonia, etc., and also hereditary King of the Swedes, Goths, and Vandals. We hereby announce by this our letter to all and each one whom it may concern: The articles written below have been submitted to us by the elders and brothers of the Lviv coppersmiths' brotherhood residing in the Halych Suburb, written and established for just reasons for the maintenance of order in this brotherhood of their craft, with a request made to us that we deign to approve and confirm them with our royal authority, and which are in the following wording: IN THE NAME OF THE LORD, AMEN. We, the brothers of the Lviv coppersmiths' brotherhood living in the suburb, observing the laws of the coppersmith craft inside and outside the city and in its district, write down and establish the articles written below after mutual consultation and agreement. And first, namely, two elders, or sworn guild masters, in the said brotherhood each year for the honor of the Highest God and for good order in the brotherhood [we shall elect], about which the notified brothers are to gather at the brotherhood every four weeks, where each of them shall deposit one and a half groszy into the brotherhood box, and there, at the decided or designated meeting, we shall deliberate on the benefit of the brotherhood; by which masters the brothers of the brotherhood [shall be summoned], and the designated place and time must be diligently observed by the guild under a penalty of six groszy. If any of the brothers arrives later than designated by the elders, he shall be punished with a council penalty of two groszy, while a journeyman shall be punished with a penalty of one grosz. If any of them does not arrive at the brotherhood upon the summons of the elders two or three times, he shall bear the penalty of the meeting. We should have an annual priest who would perform two mass offerings every quarter – one for the living, the other for the deceased brothers – and perform other services due for this title for a certain remuneration designated for him. The same priest should perform the service whenever he celebrates in each quarter, for which each of the brothers should deposit six groszy, and the journeymen three groszy for wax and funeral equipment, and for the gathering, and they should be present. The journeymen should pay half the penalty to the box for the masters for the need of the officiating priest in each quarter. Also at this time, journeymen committing an offense or punished in any way shall pay [penalties] before the guild, and all gathered in the brotherhood at the same assembly shall announce the penalties and they shall be punished with the due penalties. Whoever among the journeymen would like to practice the mastership of his craft in this city, the same must first serve with his labor for one full year under a master of our brotherhood. They shall show certificates of both legitimate birth and acquired learning of our craft, and then, with the guarantee of several men, he shall come to our brotherhood and there ask for the designation of a place for himself among the brothers, finally, by reason of entry, he should deposit two, and eighty Polish tynfs [?] into the box. Then the masters, or the guild, should accept the willing one at the designated place as a brother, provided, however, that he will be obliged to accept city rights. A master may also accept an apprentice for the learning of our craft, and after the passage of two weeks, he is obliged to present him first in the brotherhood under a penalty of twenty-four groszy, and the one presented will be obliged to deposit sixteen groszy. If he is an adult, the learning of the craft shall last for three full years, a minor boy for four, after the passage of which the master owes him one zloty and six groszy. If the apprentice, having abandoned the master and the craft, returns back, he shall deposit twenty-four groszy into the box as a penalty, and after a year he shall be obliged to learn the craft all over again. No Ruthenian schismatic shall be admitted to the learning of our craft. Furthermore, no guild brother shall undercut another guild brother in a contract, shall not take away rented dwellings for a higher rent, shall not entice journeymen of the craft to himself, neither by himself nor through substituted persons, and as often as he does this, under a penalty of a stone of wax. No son of the brothers of our brotherhood should devote himself to the craft under his parent, but under another, and that for one year. If that youth has already acquired good foundations of the craft under his parent earlier, he should serve the same craft for no longer than twelve weeks, and that according to the judgment of the masters; and that master under whom the master's son learned the craft shall provide a certificate before the guild of the brotherhood, when he wishes to become a master, regarding his behavior and qualities, as well as dexterity and knowledge of our craft; finally, he should arrive at the brotherhood with honest men, asking for a place in our brotherhood and placing one zloty as an entry fee, and forty zlotys into the brotherhood box, which the masters shall accept as their brother if he proceeds in this way. A widow, after the death of her husband, with children, if she leads a life in an honest state, should not be removed from practicing our craft, and also journeymen are to be provided to her by the remaining masters, and she shall be subject to the same duties and conditions of the brotherhood as other masters. If any of the journeymen would like to take her as a wife, the same will work for her for one year, and then he shall show certificates of both legitimate birth and learning and regulations of the craft. Furthermore, it is reserved that when some townsman arrives at the brotherhood, whom the masters are to accept as a brother on the condition that he deposits one as an entry fee and forty zlotys into the brotherhood box, furthermore accepts city rights and only then, having made an arrangement with this widow, enters into marriage. If the widow were to have no offspring, she shall derive benefit from our craft and practice it for one year and six weeks; if any of the journeyman would like to take her as a wife, he shall be subject to the same conditions expressed above. If any of the journeymen wishes to take the daughter of a master of our brotherhood as a wife, the same will work for that master for one year, and furthermore is obliged to show [certificates] and ask for admission to the brotherhood with several men, finally deposit one as an entry fee and forty zlotys into the brotherhood box, must accept city rights, and in this way he shall be accepted into the confraternity. During fairs usually held in our city, no foreign coppersmith shall dare to trade and sell craft goods otherwise than by the centner weight, according to the Krakow and Poznan custom, and by coming to the coppersmiths' brotherhood, under penalty of loss of the same goods. A merchant from Hungary or from Poland or elsewhere arriving in our city with copper and iron shall not dare to sell his goods to anyone other than the brothers of our brotherhood for the duration of three days; after the passage of which days he will be free to sell the same goods to any people of any status. A brother of our brotherhood, abounding in craft material in case of shortage and need, shall have the freedom to lend and sell such material to another master of his craft, even a foreign one. No 'stolicznik' [i.e., a partacz/unauthorized craftsman] or anyone being outside our brotherhood shall dare to practice the craft on city ground, to repair or improve vessels or any other old things. Otherwise, the guild masters, together with the remaining masters, having summoned the help of the city or Lviv castle office, shall seize these products and repaired vessels, of which they shall turn one half to the benefit of the office helping them in this measure, and the other to the benefit of the brotherhood. If any of the brothers of our craft dares to sell his products above the statutory tax, he shall be punished with a penalty according to the judgment of the masters. Each of the journeymen working under his master should work well and faithfully both at the chimney and at the workshop called 'officina warstat' without any damage or cause for damage, under a penalty according to the judgment meted out by the masters. No journeyman should take it amiss or consider that he is being wronged for this reason if the master gives a job or some vessel poorly forged by the will of the master by one of them to another journeyman for correction, and this under a penalty of loss of six 'woszlon' or under the workshop ban, if he were to start any quarrels or disputes for this reason. The same journeymen should have their own inn and two elder journeymen, and furthermore should have and hold their meetings at the same time as the masters, to which meeting they shall arrive unarmed and sober. If a journeyman, duly notified, does not wish to come to the inn, he shall bear a penalty of one [...]; for one or the other absence he shall be punished with a penalty of the meeting. A journeyman, when he arrives from Poland, shall visit the proper master; if there are sufficient journeymen at this master's, he should give one grosz to the same journeyman according to the old custom; at another master also having sufficient journeymen, to whom the same journeyman arrives, the same should happen; if there are no journeymen, he will be able to keep him for help. Toward a journeyman also arriving from Podolia, the same should be observed. If a journeyman arrives from elsewhere and wanders around the city, and does not stop by a master, he shall be punished with a penalty of the tower and a penalty of 'woszlon'. It will also be allowed for a master to send for a needed journeyman when he has a need for him, having previously obtained permission from the elders. And if any of the journeymen of our craft were to work for a 'stolicznik', commonly called a 'partacz', both in Podolia and in Volhynia, the same must justify himself in this city to which he arrives in our brotherhood in this measure and for this title will be obliged to deposit twenty-four remunerations to the journeymen of our craft [...], commonly called 'woszlon'. Journeymen shall have working hours from the feast of St. Michael until the passage of [...] Lent from the eighth hour of the day [...] until the first at night, first the masters should give the journeymen the due meal for this title, called 'burkatła'; from the feast of Easter, however, rise at dawn and work until two hours before sunset; on Saturdays, going to the bath, rise from work at the twenty-second hour. Journeymen shall sit at the table sober, and at dinner and breakfast they should behave honestly without any quarrels and disputes, under a penalty of loss of three 'woszlon'. A master having [a new cauldron] should give twelve groszy to the journeymen from the same; from the repair of the bottom of an old cauldron he should give six groszy; from the bottom of a cauldron three groszy; from a new cauldron twelve groszy, and from the repair or enlargement of the same cauldron six groszy. From a new large cauldron [...] made, twelve groszy, from its enlargement six groszy. From a large cauldron or a square bath pan, twenty-four groszy, from the bottom twelve groszy. From a pan or small cauldrons for the bath, twelve groszy, from their enlargement six groszy, and from the repair of various vessels two and a half groszy. Journeymen should not take sheet metal for repair or renovation nor nail it above the value of two and a half groszy. The sheet metal should not exceed the width of two fingers and the length of two [...]; from other works or vessels called by any name, made and finished by journeymen, one grosz shall be given by the masters to the journeymen. From the repair of cracked pans for cooking fish, the journeymen are to take [...], however, he should show this repaired pan and the money taken for the repair entirely to his master, and this to avoid a penalty if a defect were found in this repair of the pan. No lewdness or fornication, neither in the inn of our meetings nor in the houses of their masters, shall any of the journeymen commit under a penalty called the workshop ban or under the loss of six 'woszlon', as often as the journeyman is convicted for this title. A journeyman leaving the workshop and work without the will of his master should not lead away another journeyman with him by his persuasions nor cause any riots for this reason. If any of the journeymen commits this and by his riot gives the remaining journeymen a reason to abandon the workshops and work of their masters, the same shall pay from his own money everything that they all drink up in the inn of their meetings during the duration of this riot. No journeyman shall attack or rise against his master with any kind of weapon or with an insulting word or blow; which if anyone does, he shall be punished with the loss of a hand. They shall hold the meetings of their inn soberly and decently and settle their affairs; at their meeting, no journeyman shall appear with any weapon, nor during the deliberations on their affairs shall any beer or any drink be given to them, until after the completion of the deliberations and affairs of this assembly, the two elder journeymen, watching over order and measure, order beer to be served both by themselves and by others, also to foreigners if there are any, with the preservation of all honesty and gravity. During this meeting [let there be] a conversation about the order and customs observed by them in this excellent city. Leaving the inn, they shall not cause any quarrels or disputes either in the gates or on the streets with any people or among themselves and shall not unsheathe sabers, they shall not move or tear out stones from roads, streets, and territory. They shall not cut off hoops from barrels or vessels filled with water in case of fire, nor shall they tear off vessels attached to pipes or gutters. If any of the mentioned commits anything of the sort, the same shall be handed over to the city office for punishment. As for the paint [copper scale], both dry and wet, falling off the copper, the journeyman should yield priority to his master and sell nothing without the master's permission, and this not otherwise than if a merchant came to the master's workshop of his own will to buy this paint, which, however, should only be allowed to a journeyman persevering in work and in the master's workshop. Not otherwise than ten weeks before the fair usually held on St. Francis's day can journeymen leave the masters, under the loss of twenty-four 'woszlon'. Finally, whoever would dare to criticize this privilege of our brotherhood and hold it for nothing, the same shall be summoned before the court of His Royal Majesty by the elders of the same brotherhood, after a prior official warning, under a penalty of a thousand Hungarian florins, of which half shall fall to the treasury of His Royal Majesty, and the other to the benefit of the brotherhood; and if need arises regarding any of the articles expressed above, for due and appropriate execution, as often as there is a need, at the request of the elders of the same brotherhood, the city or Lviv castle office shall provide and show help and assistance. To which request we, graciously acceding, as just and corresponding to fairness, have deemed it proper to approve and confirm the letter or articles included above in all their points, clauses, articles, and conditions, as we approve and confirm by this our writing, establishing that the same (insofar as they do not violate common law and as long as they retain their force) should obtain the force of due stability. In witness whereof, we have ordered this writing signed by our hand to be strengthened with the royal seal. Given in Warsaw, on the 7th day of the month of February, in the year of our Lord 1616, the 29th year of our reign in Poland, and the 22nd in Sweden. [Signatures:] Sigismund, King Jan Szaszkowski [?] [Seal:] [Impression of the royal seal on red wax in a wax bowl, suspended on a silk cord] [Reverse:] [Note 1:] Presented to the Lviv castle court records on Tuesday after Invocavit Sunday in Lent, in the year of our Lord 1616, and an extract was made and entered. [Note 2:] This privilege, because the coppersmith masters obtained it contrary to the decree of His Royal Majesty [issued] in Malbork and without the knowledge of the magistrate, was cancelled, and the coppersmiths were punished with a penalty of ten 'grzywna'. Reading notes

Parchment document in very good condition. Richly illuminated header with a gilded and colorful 'SIGISMVNDVS' inscription and a border with floral motifs and an initial 'S' with the White Eagle and the Vasa Sheaf. The royal seal of Sigismund III Vasa in a wax bowl on a silk cord is preserved. On the verso, notes from the registration in the Lviv castle court records (1616) and a later gloss regarding the abrogation of the privilege obtained without the knowledge of the magistrate contrary to the Malbork decree.
