Foundation act of Adam Wawrzyniec Łoiecki for poor Lviv students at the Krakow Academy
The document establishes a scholarship foundation by Lviv canon Adam Wawrzyniec Łoiecki, funded by an annual 'wyderkaf' (redeemable rent) of 119 florins secured on the revenues of the city of Lviv, intended for the education of two poor youths from Lviv at the Krakow Academy. It specifies the payment amounts for the students and their university preceptor, imposes prayer duties on the scholarship holders, and appoints provisors to oversee the perpetual functioning of the endowment.

IN THE NAME OF THE LORD, AMEN. Since good and learned men are accustomed to bringing much ornament and benefit to the Commonwealth, and it is a matter of great importance to support virtue and the liberal arts. Therefore I, Adam Wawrzyniec Łoiecki, canon of Lviv, cantor of Przemyśl, wishing to provide for my dearest Fatherland according to my strength in this regard, following the example of the once most reverend, of blessed memory, Jan Zamoyski, Archbishop of Lviv, have endeavored to found from my goods, granted to me by the grace of God, a perpetual rent for two youths who could dedicate themselves to studies at the Krakow Academy. Indeed, I have already in fact, by the grace of God, acquired [this rent] from the illustrious Lviv councilors, with the consent of the forty men of the same city, as evidenced by the record drawn up for me by them before the Necessary Court [Sąd Potrzebny] on the Thursday before the upcoming feast of Saint Lawrence, deacon and martyr, in the year of our Lord 1615. Those councilors, for certain needs of their Commonwealth, accepted 1700 Polish florins from me and sold for them a 'wyderkaf' rent in the amount of 119 Polish florins and committed themselves to pay it perpetually. I wish, however, for these youths to be primarily Lvivians, coming from the city or the suburbs, genuinely poor, who due to scarcity cannot dedicate themselves to studies at their own or their parents' expense, and who shall receive this alms annually from me as long as I live, and after my passing from the provisors appointed below, and that from the hands of a private preceptor, whom I desire to always be none other than a colleague of the Minor House [Collegium Minus], namely 104 florins, that is, each of them one florin weekly for three years, and that before obtaining the first laurel [bachelor's degree], and after obtaining it, he shall receive it for another two years; and thus after the lapse of three years those who wish to apply for degrees, or after five those who obtain degrees, shall yield their place to others whom I shall choose, or after my passing, the provisors or patrons shall choose. For them also, besides the above-designated provision, I designate fifty florins annually, which shall be kept by the reverend canon of the school until the time of promotion comes, for their distribution. Which students, as long as they dedicate themselves to studies in Krakow, shall owe obedience in all things to the preceptor chosen and appointed, as mentioned above, by me or by the patrons; if they should prove unruly, after a warning given by the preceptor, they are to be removed from this benefit by me or by the provisors. To which preceptor, for his toil and labor, I designate ten florins annually from the same rent. These students shall be obliged, as long as they benefit from this endowment, to recite the seven penitential psalms together with litanies every Sunday and feast day to appease God for me and for themselves. When they reach greater prosperity and a better state, I desire that they remember the benefit rendered to them by me and I oblige them to pray to God for me, and when the opportunity arises, to serve me and my loved ones in the city and show gratitude to me and mine. And so that this my ordinance and establishment may have the power of perpetual durability, I appoint as its patrons and provisors the following: namely the reverend canon of Lviv who shall be called from the Lviv school to a reward by the most illustrious Lviv chapter, and the prudent Lviv councilors then in office, and two elders from among the forty men of Lviv, namely one from the merchants and the other from the craftsmen; whom I earnestly ask that for the glory of God and the benefit and ornament of the Fatherland they undertake this burden and endeavor to transfer the money to the hands of the preceptor at the proper time, as decided. I oblige the preceptor to calculate and pay out said alms to the mentioned students weekly, one florin to each. Furthermore, I give and grant to the mentioned provisors for all time the full right of choosing and presenting such students and I adjure them to perform and execute this office diligently before God and their conscience. If the city of Lviv should ever wish to redeem this 'wyderkaf' rent from city goods and deposit the money, then the same above-named patrons should take care of how to safely invest this sum of 1700 Polish florins. And I have ordered this my ordinance to be entered into the acts of the consistory and the Lviv city records, and I also wish for a copy of it to be sent to the noble Krakow Academy, should I not do so myself. In witness whereof I have signed this document with my own hand and sealed it. Given in Lviv, on the seventeenth day of the month of March, in the year of our Lord 1616. In the presence of the reverend and venerable: Mr. Jan Baranowski, archdeacon, Jakub Skrobiszewski, canon and preacher, doctor of both laws, Florian Naszarkowic, senior of the vicars of the metropolitan church of Lviv, Stanisław Górecki, mansionary of the metropolitan church of Lviv, and Marcin Zablicki, parish priest of Starosiele, public notary of the Lviv consistory acts, witnesses requested and called to the above.
[Signature:] Adam Wawrzyniec Łoiecki, canon of Lviv, cantor of Przemyśl, I have signed with my own voice and hand.
