Bull of Pope Urban VIII authorizing Lucas, Bishop-elect of Nicopolis, to serve as suffragan of Lviv

Urban, Bishop, Servant of the Servants of God, to our beloved son Lucas, Bishop-elect of Nicopolis, greetings and apostolic blessing. The feeling of sincere piety with which you honor us and the Roman Church makes you worthy of our favorable consideration of your requests, insofar as we can do so with God's help. Since, therefore, we have today decided by apostolic authority to provide for the aforementioned church of Nicopolis, then in a certain way deprived of the comfort of a shepherd, with your person – dear to us and our brothers because of your merits – with the counsel of these same [brothers], establishing you as its bishop and shepherd, as is more fully contained in our letters drawn up for this purpose, we, desiring to surround you with gracious favor because of your aforementioned merits, and acceding to your requests in this matter, by the authority of this letter, we permit you and grant you an indult that you shall in no way be obliged to go to the aforementioned church or reside there personally, but that you may reside in the city and diocese of Lviv, and if you are called upon to do so by our venerable brother, the current Archbishop of Lviv, who – as we have learned – lacks a suffragan, you may assist the same archbishop there in pontifical and other duties, perform pontifical offices, and also, in his stead and by his command, conduct visitations and perform other pastoral services and freely and worthily assist him; notwithstanding any apostolic constitutions and ordinances, or those issued in general, provincial, and synodal councils, whether general or particular, as well as any other contrary provisions. Therefore, let no man be permitted to violate this charter of our permission and indult or to oppose it with rash intent. If anyone should dare to attempt this, let him know that he will incur the indignation of Almighty God and of His blessed Apostles Peter and Paul.
