[Folio 1r:] WŁADYSŁAW IV, BY THE GRACE OF GOD, KING OF POLAND, GRAND DUKE OF LITHUANIA, RUTHENIA, PRUSSIA, MASOVIA, SAMOGITIA, LIVONIA, SMOLENSK AND CHERNIGOV, and also hereditary KING of the Swedes, Goths and Vandals. We hereby make known to all and each person concerned: a parchment letter was presented before us, signed by the hand of the Most Reverend Father in Christ, Lord Stanisław Grochowski, Archbishop, and the Venerable: Jan Solikowski, Dean; Jan Karol Czołhański, Scholastic; Andrzej Śrzedziński, Custos; and Łukasz Witkowski, Canon and Procurator of the Venerable Lviv Chapter, and provided with three hanging seals – one of the aforementioned Most Reverend Archbishop, the second of the Venerable Chapter, and the third of the above-mentioned Czołhański – by virtue of which the same Venerable Czołhański newly founded and erected the Lviv scholastery, and resigned his hereditary estates, that is, their entire and intact parts in the villages of Czołhany with a small castle and grange, Bełejów, Wełdzisz, Pacyków, Nowoszyn, Lolin, Wyszków and Skynaczów, situated in the Żydaczów district, as a dowry for the benefit of said scholastery in perpetuity, and this foundation was approved and confirmed by the aforementioned Most Reverend Archbishop with his Venerable Lviv Chapter, and finally, the honorable and [...] Benedykt Adam Tomiecki, son of Albert, public notary and actuary by apostolic authority and of the Lviv consistory, gave testimony of this foundation in a separate letter of his own authorship attached to the same parchment letter; [this document is] intact, whole and free from any stain of suspicion. And we were requested to deign to approve and confirm this letter with our royal authority. The content and order of this letter are contained in the following arrangement of words: IN THE NAME OF THE LORD, AMEN. For an eternal memory of the matter. Stanisław Grochowski of Grochowce, by the grace of God and the Apostolic See, Archbishop of Lviv, perpetual administrator of the Sieciechów Abbey. We make known by the content of this letter to all whom it may concern. As it happened, at our public audience, the noble Jan Cawłowski appeared in person, authorized representative of the most illustrious and reverend Lord Jan Karol of Czołhany Czołhański, Secretary to His Royal Majesty, and having presented letters of summons in the nature of a writ for the purpose of approving the foundation of the scholastery of the Lviv metropolitan church written by the same reverend lord, duly executed as it appeared, and after the arrival of the term falling on this day, he accused and did accuse of non-appearance all and each of the defendants, and having been called three times according to custom, and not appearing; because of their non-appearance, he requested the acceptance, admission and reading of said foundation, which he obtained. The content of this foundation follows and is as follows: In the name of the Most Holy and Indivisible Trinity: Father and Son, and Holy Spirit, Amen. Since that by which mortals, filled with the goodness of the Almighty, strive for the salvation of their souls through the fruits of good deeds on earth, so as not to lose eternal rewards in the heavens, not only for His glory and honor and for the merit of the treasure of immortal glory in the heavens, which neither moth, nor rust, nor the passage of eternity shall destroy, they work diligently day by day, but also, not being ungrateful for the graces granted from heaven by the right hand of the Almighty, they return them into His hands for the multiplication of greater glory, and expecting through faith and hope that which neither eye has seen, nor ear has heard, nor has it entered into the heart of man, where with all one's heart [Folio 2r:] and in the spirit of love poured out towards God, their Savior, they should and are obliged to testify with all humility. Therefore I, Jan Karol of Czołhany Czołhański, Secretary to His Royal Majesty, of the Sas coat of arms, born on the lands of Ruthenia from a distinguished and ancient lineage, and finally, although unworthy, honored with holy priestly orders, desiring to turn the temporal goods which flowed to me from heaven through inheritance from my ancestors – the judgments of the Lord are a great abyss – to the profit for the eternal salvation of my soul and those of my ancestors; so that my dearest fatherland, not only shaken by schism but also exposed to the raids of the Scythians and barbaric devastations, might grow in the glory, honor and fame of Almighty God, His Mother and His Saints, and these very lands of Ruthenia, under the protection of the Lord's right hand, might avoid the dangers of schism, wars and raids; so that the clergy and [...] (which is the foremost part of our Commonwealth), as well as holy justice as the avenger of crimes and guardian of laws on the judicial benches, especially the tribunal ones, might endure in their strength, and so that men skilled in good and noble arts, ready to zealously stand in defense of God, His glory, the Church and the safety of the Fatherland, could never be lacking – relying in everything and entirely on a certain contract concluded by way of marriage settlement, with the addition of the consent of the most enlightened and most reverend lord, Lord Stanisław of Grochowce Grochowski, by the grace of God and the Apostolic See, Archbishop of Lviv, perpetual administrator of the Sieciechów Abbey, together with the Venerable Chapter of the most illustrious and reverend lords prelates and canons of the Lviv metropolitan church, and signed and sealed by their hands and seal on both sides, as well as on the deed of donation made before the office and the Lviv castle records in this matter on Wednesday after the feast of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mary of the current year, between us drawn up, by virtue of which my hereditary estates, entire and intact parts, which are found in the villages situated in the Żydaczów district, namely Czołhany with a small castle and grange, Bełejów, Wełdzisz, Pacyków, Nowoszyn, Lolin, Wyszków, Skynaczów, for the account of the foundation of a prelate to be newly created, namely a scholastic – without infringing in any way on the arrangements concluded in ancient times and hitherto observed between the Venerable Chapter and the distinguished Lviv magistracy – to the most illustrious and reverend lords prelates and canons of the Venerable Chapter of the Lviv metropolitan church, present and future, by way of donation I have resigned in perpetuity, so also the parts of the estates and villages above mentioned now through the mediation of this my foundation, by every possible means, law and best order I resign, give, donate, found, incorporate and embody forever, leaving nothing of the right, ownership or use in the estates above written to myself or my successors, or to anyone of them, as is more broadly stated by both the contract by way of marriage settlement and the aforementioned Lviv castle deed of donation made regarding the above. Because of this foundation of the scholastery of the Most Holy Virgin [...] made, first of all, I establish myself as the founder as the scholastic of the Lviv metropolitan church, having to be admitted to the circle of the Venerable Chapter according to custom, and I present [myself] to the most enlightened and most reverend lord Archbishop of Lviv or to whom this belongs by law; consequently, the right of patronage of such a founded scholastery, as often as it shall become vacant through my resignation or death, I reserve to myself in this way for the naming and presenting of a successor or successors by living voice, letters of presentation or testament, until the end of my life. Then after my death and the last day of my life, as often as the prelacy of that scholastery shall successively become vacant through resignation or death, the Venerable Chapter and its prelates and canons shall be obliged and bound eternally and forever to give it first of all to one, and subsequently to successive ones, from the lineage of my house of Czołhański of the Sas coat of arms, and not to anyone else. If, however, then and in the future at its vacancy there should not be from the family of me, the founder, a suitable person, that is, one having priestly orders, to take the above-written prelacy of the scholastery, then the Venerable Chapter of prelates and canons shall choose, name and present a scholastic from their own circle, originating from both noble parents. That scholastic, the successor named, chosen and presented by me and the Venerable Chapter, during my lifetime shall be bound and obliged to celebrate once in every [Folio 3r:] week the Divine Sacrifice of the Mass for sins, and after my death mainly for the soul of me, as the founder, and my ancestors. Finally, so that the Venerable Chapter itself may be able to assign to my successor and each subsequent successor and to any of them from the mentioned founded estates a pension appropriate to his office and according to its discretion, and actually assigned and paid the sum of one hundred and fifty florins, I give and grant the right and power: beyond this pension, he shall participate without anyone's opposition in all ancient incomes and newly acquired ones from the above-mentioned parts of the estates which concern them, according to the part and lot of the customarily maintained divisions, as well as in the stall, active and passive voice, seniority, and also in bearing all public, real, remaining and private burdens. Furthermore, I oblige and command the most reverend lords prelates and canons of the Lviv Venerable Chapter, my dearest brothers, considering the scantiness of that foundation, that from the incomes of the estates and parts of the above-written villages founded for the deputy surrogate judge chosen from their circle every second year, in which hitherto in the Lviv Venerable Chapter there was a lack of a surrogate judge – so that in the future every year it shall have its deputies: one from the ancient endowment of the most illustrious archbishops, and the second from this one of mine, for which I designate six hundred florins for the one chosen by the Venerable Chapter. Similarly, for the anniversary of the day of my death in the Lviv metropolitan church falling every year, I oblige them with due piety to the actual giving, counting and annual paying in perpetuity of three hundred florins with distribution according to the arrangement to be made at the next chapter, where the office of the scholastic will also be treated. For all this, so done, written, founded and ordered by me, with due respect I ask and demand from the Venerable Chapter of the most illustrious and reverend lords prelates and canons of the metropolitan church, that out of zeal for the multiplication of [God's glory] and mutual love it may be accepted, preserved, defended, executed and actually brought to effect by it; otherwise, whoever in the future would oppose this will of my foundation in anything, in any way and by any help or advice, him I call to the court and tribunal of the Almighty for judgment; preserving in everything both the mutual contract with the Venerable Chapter, my dearest brothers, and the deed of donation, as above drawn up, relating to the above, as well as the express bail not only in the above-mentioned but in every most perfect way. This was done on the day, month and year as above. And after the admission and public reading of the foundation, as above, persisting in the statement of the representative made in the name of his reverend lord principal as to what the successor scholastic will have and receive each year by way of pension for the exercise of his office, he insisted and with due urgency demanded because of the non-appearance of all and individual so summoned, that first of all they be recognized as disobedient, and because of their disobedience, the foundation of the scholastery thus made in all its points, clauses, articles and all conditions by the authority of the ordinary to approve, confirm, ratify, include in the ecclesiastical immunity, rule that it is to have the power of eternal duration, order and command its due execution and decide what is in accordance with the law, as well as issue and deliver letters of summons in the nature of a writ for the purpose of the institution of the same to this scholastery, not only in the above-mentioned but in every best way. And we, Stanisław of Grochowce Grochowski, Archbishop of Lviv, having recognized as disobedient all and each of those so summoned and again called three times, and although long awaited in the audience hall and not appearing, as a result of their non-appearance and when no one opposed, the foundation of the scholastery of the Lviv metropolitan church thus made by the most illustrious and reverend Lord Jan Karol Czołhański, Secretary to His Royal Majesty, by our ordinary authority in all its points, clauses, articles, conditions and all obligations we have approved, confirmed, ratified, and we decide and rule by virtue of this our judgment that it is to have the power of eternal duration and is to be given and intended for due execution according to its wording, and we have ordered to issue letters of summons in the nature of a writ for the purpose of introducing the same most illustrious and reverend lord to that scholastery, delivered in due form against all and each of those thinking that some right to the above belongs to them. In the presence of the most illustrious [...] and reverend lords: Andrzej Śrzedziński, Lviv Custos, Provost of Przemyśl; Łukasz Witkowski; Walenty Skrobiszewski, Doctor of Both Laws, Vicar and Official General; Samuel Kozarski, Lviv Canons, and very many other credible witnesses. In testimony of which we have signed this letter with our hand [Folio 4r:] and ordered it to be strengthened with our seal. Done and given in Lviv, in our archiepiscopal palace, on Wednesday, the twenty-eighth of November in the year from the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ one thousand six hundred and forty. Stanisław Grochowski, Archbishop of Lviv, with my own hand. Jan Karol of Czołhany Czołhański, Lviv Scholastic, Secretary to His Royal Majesty, with my own hand. The same foundation, at the request of the most illustrious and reverend Lord Jan Karol Czołhański, Lviv Scholastic, at the General Chapter in the year from the Birth of the Virgin one thousand six hundred and forty-first, on Saturday after the Sunday of Reminiscere, that is, the ninth day of the month of March, in the presence of the most illustrious and reverend lords: Jan of Solca Solikowski, Dean; Andrzej of Średnie Śrzedziński, nominee Bishop of Nicopolis, Suffragan, Custos, Provost of Przemyśl; Stanisław Stamirowski, Preacher; Jan of Rakszawa Rakszewski; Łukasz of Witkowice Witkowski; Jakub Skrobiszewski, Doctor of Both Laws; Samuel of Kozarki Kozarski; Piotr Majaszewski; Józef of Rzeczyca Wydżga, prelates and canons of the holy Lviv metropolitan church gathered in chapter, by the unanimous and concordant will of all and by express consent, common opinion and voice, with all its points, clauses, articles, conditions and knots by virtue of a capitular resolution was accepted, admitted and ratified forever. For greater faith and open testimony of which, this letter signed by the hands of the most illustrious and reverend lords Dean, Custos and Procurator, was strengthened by the hanging seal of the Venerable Chapter. Year and day as above. Jan Solikowski, Dean of the Lviv metropolitan church, with my own hand. Andrzej Śrzedziński, Lviv Custos, Provost of Przemyśl; Łukasz Witkowski, Lviv Canon, Secretary to His Royal Majesty, Procurator of the Venerable Lviv Chapter, with my own hand. And since I, Master Benedykt Adam Tomiecki, son of Albert, public notary and actuary by the holy apostolic authority and of the Lviv consistory, have seen and read the above-mentioned foundation of the Lviv scholastery newly erected and founded by the most illustrious and reverend Lord Jan Karol of Czołhany Czołhański, and here written word for word, and that no other was, is and forever will be the will of the mentioned most illustrious and reverend lord founder than that which is contained in this same foundation and original, I have known and understood from his mouth, clear words and those above-mentioned letters, and the same signed by the hands of the most enlightened and most reverend lord, Lord Stanisław of Grochowce Grochowski, by the grace of God and the Apostolic See, Archbishop of Lviv, and the above-written most illustrious and reverend lords: the lord founder and the prelates of the Venerable Chapter of the Lviv metropolitan church listed below, and confirmed and accepted by the same Venerable Chapter in all points and clauses, and also sealed with three seals – one of the most enlightened and most reverend lord Archbishop of Lviv, the second of the lord founder, the third of the above-mentioned Venerable Lviv Chapter, hanging on a silk cord of red color to the same foundation, I have seen. Therefore, the same foundation, requested and summoned by the above-mentioned lord founder, in testimony of the above I have strengthened and signed with my usual sign, name and surname, which I use in such cases. In the presence of those above. This was done in the year, month and day as above. We, therefore, Władysław the Fourth, King, graciously inclining to that request, out of our usual care for the multiplication and propagation of the Divine cult, have deemed it proper to approve, ratify and confirm the letters of the above-inserted foundation of the Lviv scholastery in all their points, clauses, articles, contents and any conditions with our royal authority, as indeed we do approve, ratify and confirm, and the estates above listed of the same Lviv scholastery, as it was said above, newly founded and erected, we adjudge and embody, and assign to the law and ecclesiastical immunity for eternally lasting times. In faith of which we have ordered this letter signed with our hand to be strengthened with the royal seal. Given in Warsaw, at the general royal sejm, on the 28th day of September, in the year of our Lord 1641, of our reign in Poland the 9th, in Sweden the 10th year. Władysław King. Reading notes

Document in the form of a parchment booklet (libellus, 4 parchment folios in a parchment binding). On fol. 4r, the autograph of King Władysław IV ('Vladislaus Rex') and the signature of the Chancellery Regent Jakub Maksymilian Fredro. The red wax royal seal in a metal box hanging on a red silk cord is preserved in its entirety. Folio 4v and the back cover contain intabulation entries from 1796 (Forum Nobilium in Lviv). The catalog card gives the date 28.09.1641, which agrees with the royal dating (the document transumes the act of Archbishop Stanisław Grochowski from 28.11.1640 and the chapter's acceptance from 09.03.1641).
