COUNCILLORS OF THE CITY OF LVIV To all together and to each one individually, whom it may concern, by the power of this letter we announce. When at the plenary session of our Council Office, the noble Mr. Walenty Scholc Stancell and the distinguished Mr. Mikołaj Zychlin, Doctor of Philosophy, our fellow councillors, who were officially summoned and appointed to examine and resolve disputes occurring between the guild masters, masters, and journeymen of the Lviv carpenters' guild, that is, to announce the ordinance binding in said guild – having duly fulfilled the duty of their delegation in the presence of the honest Szymon Maciążek and Wojciech Długosz, guild masters, Jan Szydłowczyk, Krzysztof Ziemborski, Andrzej Student, Maciej Dziś, Jan Szczepanik, Sebastian Babiski, Krzysztof Oleśnicki, carpenter masters of the Lviv suburbs, as well as Walenty Srudenczyk, Stefan Gwóźdź, Stanisław Ganczar, Jan Grodecki, Walenty Koniczny, Piotr Martynka, Maciej Czarnopyski, Wojciech Tyrawski, Kasper Kołkowski, Krzysztof Niemierowic, journeymen, and many other personally appearing masters and journeymen of the same carpenters' guild, mentioned in this declaration, requesting the reading, acceptance, and approval and perpetual confirmation of the following provisions by our authority – by virtue of their reliable and faithful report, they submitted for entry into these acts and for approval by our Office a declaration of the ordinance, that is, the resolution of disputes that arose between those guild masters, masters, and journeymen, made for their better order with the consent of the entire mentioned guild, written in a consistent document and signed by hand, with the following wording: Wording of the Declaration: We, the undersigned councillors, being delegated, gathered at the carpenters' guild in the inn located in the Gładyszowska tenement house, in order to settle the disputes described below occurring between the masters and the journeymen. There, having heard the masters' proposal and the journeymen's response, and then the mutual disputes, and having read the guild privilege to the entire assembly of masters and journeymen, we made the following decision and agreement: Since the privilege defines the entire order that is to be maintained between the masters and the journeymen, and the journeymen knew nothing about this privilege and its conditions, as the masters did not read it to them nor entrust it to them for reading – therefore, we have forgiven the journeymen for the rebellions instigated so far, and from now on we have ordered them to mutually observe the privilege and all its provisions. Thus, immediately all those present, both masters and journeymen: Szymon Maciążek and Wojciech Długosz, guild masters, Jan Szydłowczyk, Krzysztof Ziemborski, Jędrzej Student, Matys Dziś, Jan Szczepanik, Sebastian Babiski, Krzysztof Oleśnicki and all others, of whom there were sixteen, as well as the journeymen: Walenty Srudencik, Szczepan Gwóźdź – senior journeymen and rebels, Stanisław Ganczar, Jan Grodecki the table-man, Walenty Koniczny, Piotr Martynka, Matusz Czarnopyski, Wojciech Tyrawski, Gaspar Kołkowski, Krzysztof Niemierowic, Stanisław Dziesiątnik, Jan Piechowczyk, Tomasz Kusaty, Jan Samborski and others, of whom there were many at that time, declared and gave their hands to us and to each other as a sign of agreement in these words: That we fully accept the privilege and its content, as they are good, and we promise to conduct ourselves in everything according to said privilege. We agree to the payment designated in the privilege: twelve [groszy], from Easter to Saint Michael's Day ten groszy each, and from Saint Michael's Day to Easter we only ask that our [...] current payment not be withheld nor reduced in any way, under the penalties written in the privilege. And should a dispute arise, we reserve the freedom to complain about them before the Office. We will not accept boys for training, and indeed if any of them [...], we will not record them in this state nor in their book. No one should buy wood at the marketplace without the masters' permission, and they should approach the guild with the greatest service, without delay and after proper settlement, paying the duty [...] they submitted. They are to wait for work not before the primaries nor in the Market Square, but in the inn, not like woodcutters, but like honest craftsmen (as this is a guild craft, tavern-based and [...]), and the masters are to summon them from the inn with a note and take them to work. Journeymen who have not yet completed their training under the supervision of masters are to submit, finish their training, and fulfill their guild duty. Furthermore, all journeymen who have not yet paid the guild fee should pay it as soon as possible. So that the matter might be better and the order better than before, and the ceremony in the guild shorter and less cost incurred for these meetings, they decided among themselves in our presence that the journeymen should leave their separate inn from the appointed time and move their meetings and their box to the masters' inn, as there is a common room there. They are to keep the box, the guild chest, and their affairs together with the masters. They are to keep one key to the box or chest themselves, and the other with the masters; they are to collect penalties into their own chest separately and manage them. When opening the box [...] two masters will sit with us under penalty. On the other hand, the members should come to the guild sober and conduct guild affairs for a good example to the journeymen, and sit at the table without bandoliers or any weapons. Furthermore, the privilege is to be read aloud at every guild meeting before the start of deliberations, so that both masters and journeymen hear its content and take it to heart, to which they have committed themselves. They are not to take away or poach apprentices from each other at work, neither during drinking nor through quarrels, under the penalty described in the privilege. Journeymen also are not to leave the master for whom they have undertaken work until its completion, nor allow themselves to be sub-hired. Woodcutters and bunglers who intrude and spoil the honest carpentry craft, holding it in low regard, are to be removed from work by all together, and they are to be forbidden by all means from secretly practicing the craft without submitting to training and guild law. As for the altar in the parish church: although all the elders and the young had long maintained this altar together, yet over time, due to misunderstandings and negligence, it was abandoned, and the carpenter journeymen, who had left their masters for several years, obtained approval from the local ordinary, His Excellency the Bishop, at their own expense without the knowledge of their masters – therefore, at our persuasion and mutual consent, they joined a unified brotherhood following the example of other guilds. They agreed that all, both masters and journeymen, would repair this altar and its apparatus at common expense, observe religious services, and punish those who would not be at their mass, and give three groszy each to the chest for the needs of the altar on the Exaltation of the Holy Cross without exception. Finally: if any journeyman or master dares to violate this provision, made now jointly by the Office and the guild, and his own privilege, to incite any rebellions or persuade others to do so, such a person is to be removed from the guild, and as a rebel and a stranger handed over to the judgment of the Municipal Office, accused and punished according to the guilt on property and on the body. And this punishment is to extend to all and to each, under whatever jurisdiction he might remain, provided he wishes to practice the carpentry craft. To which we, the deputies, have signed with our own hands, and both sides have consented to the entry of this provision into the official books of the lords councillors as their patrons. Done in the carpenters' inn at the assembly of all masters and journeymen on the twenty-first day of the month of [November] in the year of our Lord one thousand six hundred and forty-five. Walenty Scholc, councillor, delegate from the college of lords councillors. Mikołaj Zychlin, consul, as an arbiter delegated there. We, therefore, the councillors, have permitted the above-included declaration of the ordinance, that is, the resolution of disputes between the carpenters and the journeymen of the same guild, prepared and reported by the above-mentioned colleagues of ours, and duly and gratefully accepted by the guild members, to be entered into these acts and – insofar as it does not contradict common law – we have approved it by our authority, reserving, however, for ourselves and our successors the right to correct, amend, supplement, and change the points of this declaration of disputes according to the requirements of things and times. In testimony of which, the seal of our Lviv Council Office has been attached to this letter. Done in Lviv on Wednesday the day after the feast of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary [...] in the year of our Lord one thousand six hundred and forty-five. [Signed:] Bartłomiej Zimorowic, notary of the city of Lviv
