Confirmation by King John Casimir of the statute of the Lviv guild of maltsters, mead-brewers, and brewers
King John Casimir approves the privilege of his brother Władysław IV, which transumes the statute granted in 1621 by the municipal authorities of Lviv to the guild of maltsters, brewers, and mead-brewers. The document regulates the organization of the brotherhood, craft rules, disciplinary penalties, defense obligations toward the city, and the religious duties of the guild members.

We hereby make known to all and each person concerned by this letter.
There has been presented before us a parchment document, signed by the hand of the once most serene, divine, and of eternal memory Władysław IV, King of Poland, our dearest brother, and reinforced with a hanging seal of the lesser chancellery, sound, whole, intact, and free from all suspicion, containing within itself the confirmation of [the articles] of the Lviv brewers, with a humble request directed to us that we might deign to approve, confirm, and ratify it with our same royal authority, the wording of which is as follows:
WŁADYSŁAW IV, by the grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, Livonia, and also hereditary King of the Swedes, Goths, and Vandals. We hereby make known to all and each person concerned by this letter that on behalf and on the part of the guild of brewers of our city of Lviv [has been presented] the document inscribed below, reinforced with a hanging seal of the same [city], containing the articles or order of the brewers, with a humble request that we might deign to approve and confirm them with our royal authority. The wording of which document is as follows:
[The authorities] of the city of Lviv, to all and each person concerned, whoever needs to know of this, hereby [...] openly and for the record we make known that we, out of our duty, desiring good order in the crafts [...], through which the glory of the Lord God is multiplied, and the city gains its fame and ornament, observing this, and as in a [...] body, so the government among the commonalty and the loose assembly aiming to produce decent and [...] results having before our eyes, also having diligently considered the request and need brought before us by the honest masters of the crafts of malting, mead-brewing [and brewing], being in the official guild: [since the old] privilege given to their guild, and confirmed by the kings of Poland of holy memory, having been lost in the year 1565 due to an unfortunate fire that accidentally befell the city, according to custom [...] they managed their affairs and the order of the craft until this time, both in the Church of God and in the Commonwealth, and with the share [artillery/wagon] attached to the city according to their ability they provided, the guild order, as they conducted it through the tradition of their ancestors and one matter in [...], the other they moderated through controversies and appeals brought to us, and not being able for a long time [...] due to the increase in the number of brothers in the mentioned crafts being [...] to steadily and thoroughly manage the guild orders, the masters of those crafts, listed by name and surname below, submitted to us articles and orders written down according to the old [...] of their guild, so that they could conduct affairs with the successor masters of their crafts according to them, asking that we confirm them with the authority of our office and power [...] our to them power and authority

certainty according to common law and the privilege of the city of Lviv. Which articles and orders are as follows:
FIRST. Both masters and journeymen are to have one common inn in the city, in which they will hold a meeting every four weeks, and will keep the chest with the guild privileges and registers, as well as the money collected at the meetings. Each meeting is to be opened according to the custom maintained in other guilds, at which matters are to be conducted calmly, orderly, and decently. If someone does not arrive at it, not having a just cause or not having excused themselves upon the guild's summons, then if it is a master, [he forfeits] groschen [...], a journeyman half a groschen of penalty. Also, no master or journeyman is to come and sit at the meeting with a weapon – the master under penalty of [...], and the journeyman under penalty of half a stone of wax.
SECOND. The election of elders is to be held every year during the election of city offices, in the full guild, by all brothers of all crafts, to which newly elected ones every two maltsters, one brewer, and [...] of mead-brewers for table beer are to be chosen. So that there is guild order at the meetings and when registering new [members], two brothers who would conduct the guild business from all others are to be elected every year by those already mentioned [...] and in sitting at the guild, so that one does not precede the other, according to the guild register, as each joined the guild, under penalty designated by the guild, each will sit in their place.
THIRD. So that the deceased brothers have comfort for their souls through [...], in whichever church they have an altar and a priest, to celebrate mass for the deceased souls of the brothers on every Ember day, at which after the Gospel the priest will mention [the names] from the guilds [...], and at such services both mead-brewers and journeymen should be present at the offering. The same order is to be maintained by the whole guild at the funerals of a deceased master or his wife, and journeymen. Also, after the election of city offices and guild masters [...] they are to celebrate a sung mass with organs every year in the Holy Spirit and provide cleaning for the altar. If someone were not present at such masses without a just cause and missed the designated service, then the master will be punished with a pound of wax, and the journeyman with half a pound.
FOURTH. [...] and the guild glass, the bastion into artillery, gunpowder, balls, various weapons, into all kinds of arms, cloth, sacks, and other supplies belonging to the defense of both the city and their own health, they shall provide at their own expense under sufficient penalty, without waiting for an official order.
FIFTH. When a master of any craft accepts a boy for training, he should [...] report him, and after two weeks have passed, having sent him to the inn for a meeting, the journeyman is to enter him into the register, and upon registration deposit [...] zlotys into the brotherhood chest; and after being freed before the whole guild, the freed companion is to give two logs or [...].
SIXTH. No master of the mentioned crafts is to allow a companion who has not been entered into the register of companions nor fulfilled the companion orders to work, nor work with him himself under penalty of [...] wax. And if he wanted to accept him to work with him, then he should report such a one, and present a certificate and proof of his origin, behavior, and freedom.
[p. 4 / fol. 2r:]

Such a companion also should be entered into the companion register and give two zlotys.
SEVENTH. Whoever among the companions would like to join as a master among other masters and be recognized as a master in his craft and in the guild, such a one is to join the full guild with two steady brothers or with two masters of this guild, ask for acceptance among the masters, show a birth and freedom certificate or a certificate of virtue [...], or put up guarantors for himself. When the whole guild deems him worthy, he should enter himself into the register among the masters, give one zloty and six groschen, and take the designated place in the guild where the guild masters indicate to him.
EIGHTH. Whoever is already accepted as a master among the brothers by the custom described above, then besides the entrance fee, as it was said, the new master of the malting craft [will give] a new malt shovel, the brewing one a new saber, the mead-brewing one a small axe, a cartridge pouch, and a powder horn for other [...], and separately each of them should give fifteen zlotys to the chest for guild needs from the hands of [...] honest birth.
NINTH. One master cannot undertake work or mash at two different hosts, only at one, and all [are to conduct] work [...]. Maltsters are not to brew spirits or beer [...] at once under penalty of half a barrel they are to produce [...] mill [...] to go to the office under penalty of a stone of wax for guild needs. In these mentioned crafts, masters cannot encroach upon or spoil each other's work under penalty of half a stone of wax. The brewer's worker [...] for the city's need, such as for [...] to the steward separately zlotys on St. Agnes's day before each [...] four, and to the mead-brewer twelve half-barrels [...].
ELEVENTH. Meeting, masters and journeymen should give to the chest for meetings at the inn: one and a half groschen the masters, and the journeymen [...]; at the quarterly [Ember day] meeting the masters three groschen each, and the journeymen one groschen each [...]. For all offenses, both masters and journeymen are to be subject to punishment in the guild, according to the [...] of the offense and brotherly transgression. And a disobedient master or journeyman, who if he feels aggrieved, it will be allowed for him to appeal from the guild to the office of the lords councilors, however, first pay the penalty decreed by the guild, and if it is a prison sentence, give a guarantee and take the case of unjust punishment to the office of the masters.
TWELFTH. If someone, besides all these mentioned crafts, from women or [...] for a funeral and escorting the body, and also for the salvation of the soul wanted to be in the guild brotherhood, then he is to enter himself [...], giving twelve groschen upon registration, and on every Ember day contribute two groschen to the brotherhood chest, and the guild with all the brothers

We therefore, the mentioned [councilors of the city of Lviv], wishing that the masters of those crafts, now and for future times practicing in these crafts, all together at this city always according to the described articles in order might live [...] brothers, masters, companions, and journeymen might conduct all guild affairs, and eradicate old neglected disorders, first for the honor and glory of the Lord God, and for the peculiar ornament and defense of this city, and of His holy name [...], inclining to the laws and privileges which once the kings of Poland deigned to graciously grant and confirm, we have founded this guild and brotherhood for them and [...] with the authority of our office and municipal laws we establish and found by this letter, keeping in force all articles, customs, and orders, both of the old privileges, and also current matters kept by them themselves according to ancient custom [...], reserving however for ourselves and our future successors according to need [...] to change [...]. In testimony of this, we ordered the seal of our office to be pressed.
Done [...] in the year one thousand six hundred and twenty-first.
We therefore, [Władysław IV] KING, graciously inclining to the request of the mentioned brewers of our city, approve and confirm the submitted [articles] in all their points and clauses, in which they are used and practiced, establishing that they are to obtain eternal force, and we declare that the brewers and mead-brewers in the same guild should suffer no obstacles. In witness whereof we ordered this letter signed to be reinforced with the crown seal. Given in Lviv, on the 28th day of October, in the year of our Lord 16[...] Władysław King, Tomasz Leon Białecki.
We therefore, John Casimir, King, graciously inclining to this request as just, approve and confirm the above-included letter in all points, clauses, and articles, insofar as they do not contradict common law and are in use, establishing that they are to obtain eternal force. In witness whereof we ordered this letter signed by our hand to be reinforced with the crown seal. Given [...] in the camp [?], in the year of our Lord 1649, of our reign in Poland and Sweden the second year, on the 9th [or 11th] day of September.

Parchment document consisting of 2 originally sewn sheets (or a cut bifolium), currently heavily torn vertically along the entire length of both sheets with significant text losses along the tear line. Sheet 1 is p. 2 (recto) and p. 3 (verso), sheet 2 is p. 4 (recto) and p. 5 (verso). The transumpt of John Casimir from 1649 includes the transumpt of King Władysław IV (dated in Lviv, October 28, 1634, with the signature of Deputy Chancellor Tomasz Zamoyski), which in turn transumes the statute of the Lviv guild of maltsters, brewers, and mead-brewers from 1621. The seal has not survived (traces of cuts for the seal strap/cord).
