[Note at the top:] Turners and ropemakers
JOHN CASIMIR,
by the grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, Livonia, Smolensk and Chernihiv, and also hereditary King of the Swedes, Goths and Vandals.
We hereby make known to all and each, whom it may concern, that a paper document has been presented to Us, authentically extracted from the acts of the Lwów council office, containing the articles of the Lwów guild of turners and ropemakers, the essence of which is as follows:
Done in Lwów on the Tuesday before the feast of Saint Margaret, Virgin and Martyr, in the year of our Lord one thousand six hundred and fifty-three. To all and each, whom it may concern, by the power of this document we make known how the illustrious guild masters of the Lwów guild of turners and ropemakers, elected and sworn for the current year, having personally arrived at a full session of our council office, being of sound mind and body, not coerced or compelled, but also acting on behalf of other senior and junior masters of the turners' and ropemakers' guild, standing personally by their side in great number and gathering, and giving their kind consent to everything written below, openly, voluntarily and willingly presented the articles written below concerning and touching upon the good order of their combined guild, written from both sides by the common and unanimous effort and resolution of themselves and the entire guild, signed by their own hands, approving them and confirming them in all and individual points, clauses, requests and parts contained therein, and presented them, requesting according to the wording of the words, that each of them be approved and strengthened by our office for eternal times by the power of the laws and privileges granted to this city by the Most Serene Kings of Poland regarding the public repository, accepted into the current acts and entered into them. IN THE NAME OF THE LORD! Amen. Done during the quarterly session of the ropemakers' and turners' guild, joined in this city for many years, in the year one thousand six hundred and fifty-three, on the Monday after the Most Holy Trinity. Since for so many years, for various reasons, we could not come to order in some points on both sides of our guild, as is maintained in other crown cities, until now, therefore now by the common advice and permission of the brothers, senior and junior, of both the turners' and ropemakers' united guild, following the example of other crown cities of the turner and ropemaker craft, applying ourselves to our old privileges, namely to the privilege of the late King Stephen, dated in Lwów on the first day of the month of July in the year of our Lord one thousand five hundred and seventy-eight (which we do not wish to fail in any way), maintaining in everything our old customs and rites, we have unanimously agreed among ourselves, all seniors and juniors of both guilds, on certain articles and submit them to the attention of the Lwów councilors,
[p. 2 / scan 3:]
to whom it belongs by law and old custom; which are as follows:
First article. If any brother, of the turner's craft as well as the ropemaker's, wishes to join our guild, such a one should first count out fifteen Polish zlotys to the public chest; then he should [give] to the tower of our guild half a stone of gunpowder, and to the church of Saint Lawrence (whom we choose as our patron and take the mentioned church of his under our care, wishing to provide all cleanliness in it according to our ability) half a stone of wax. Furthermore, everyone joining our common guild will have to either provide a supper for the brothers, or count out twelve zlotys of Polish number and currency to the chest and give two skins of honey. And above all, he will have to make a proof of his craft, that is, to exhibit and make the necessary art in the manner described below. A brother of the turner's craft will have to make, according to the mentioned privilege granted by the late King Stephen, a flask with one screw, in which a double drink could be [kept] separately without any mixing. The same should make a can, which we call a lamp, with a long neck, according to the Stefanian privilege. Also a cup of Italian workmanship, also according to the description expressed in the mentioned privilege. A brother of the ropemaker's craft is to make rope on a fathom (neither less, nor more) twelve, and this is to be twice wired, and the third time lowered. The same is to make a wire goldsmith's belt of four full cubits. Also a cord twice wired of thirty fathoms, neither less, nor more, and finally an animal net triple of thirty fathoms, in which there is to be about twenty-four.
Second article. If any brother does not show such art described above and could not satisfy it not for lack of skill, but for another just cause, then he will have to, whether a turner or a ropemaker, pay for such art according to the valuation of the entire guild, as is also explicitly stated on the side of the turners in the privilege of King Stephen.
Third article. [...crossed out...] then such a one, when the proper time comes for him to be accepted into the guild, will have to either make half of the art already described above, or pay half in ready money also according to the guild valuation.
Fourth article. Everyone who joins this common guild and satisfies the duties described above, will have to show a letter of his good birth, accept city law according to the laws and custom of this city and take an oath before the Lwów council office, and give to the city arsenal five bundles of fuses, if he is a ropemaker, and if a turner – a musket to the common tower. Which the guild masters are to diligently observe from their duty.
Fifth article. This our guild, joined from turners and ropemakers, [is to] elect two guild masters every year, at the time customary in this city for all guilds, and present them to the councilors, and these two guild masters should be of the Roman religion, one of the turners and the other of the ropemakers.
Sixth article. The guild masters, unanimously elected and sworn, will have to send for the brothers to a meeting in the customary way according to the following need, and all the summoned brothers are to gather to the guild then under a penalty of six groschen.
Seventh article. And if the brothers of this our joined guild were also called by the same guild masters to funerals, to requiem masses or to other needs
[p. 3 / scan 4:]
and acts, then they are always to appear without any contradiction, and whoever would not want to be obedient in this measure and did not appear at such acts, then he is to be punished with a penalty of six groschen irrevocably, as often as the need arises.
Eighth article. Having been at meetings and sitting by the exhibited chest, all together and each individually should maintain all modesty, observing this in every way, so that they maintain sobriety as diligently as possible. And if ever any drunkard came to the guild, then such a one will have to count out three marks of penalty, of which two are to belong to the Lwów council office, and the third to the guild.
Ninth article. At public meetings and the brotherly session, everyone should keep his place and sit on it modestly and quietly, just as one first joined the guild; and if one took another's place and occupied it intentionally, then such a one is to give two pounds of wax to the church of Saint Lawrence and for other brotherly needs irrevocably.
Tenth article. Which brother would take a boy for learning, then he should report him to the guild within two weeks, and in the second weeks he is to record him into the guild according to the old custom. And if he had such a boy with him for more than two weeks and did not report him to the guild, then he will fall under a penalty of three pounds of wax to the church of Saint Lawrence and for other brotherly needs.
Eleventh article. A boy or apprentice given for learning to a master, whether of the turner's or ropemaker's craft, should learn for three full years, and not less, and having finished three years and already having been freed by the master, he will have to work for a weekly wage for his master (with whom he learned) for half a year, and this according to the rate here in Lwów [...crossed out...].
Twelfth article. Both the turner and the ropemaker here in Lwów will have to provide a treat according to the tavern craft, applying himself in this measure also to the old custom.
Thirteenth article. If any brother died, and he owed something to the guild, then his spouse, the remaining widow, if she wanted to enjoy the craft after the death of her husband, will have to pay the debt contracted by her husband.
Fourteenth article. Whoever of the brothers had two companions, then such a one should give and release one to the widow, if she needed him for the relief and sustenance of her own.
Fifteenth article. Whoever would speak up after his deceased father, and was not freed, whether in the turner's or ropemaker's craft, then the guild should free such a one here in Lwów.
Sixteenth article. Every brother of the local ropemakers' guild should do seven-cubit, twelve and six-cubit work; and on which brother it would appear that he was to do eight-fold work, he falls under a penalty of five marks to the guild irrevocably.
Seventeenth article. If any brother of both crafts refused a journeyman to another brother, he should give five pounds of wax for the needs of the church of Saint Lawrence and for other brotherly needs.
Eighteenth article. If any brother dared to criticize the work of another (which according to the common custom of all guilds and [behavior] he should not do),
[p. 4 / scan 5:]
then such a one will have to give three pounds of wax; and such wax, as well as those which we have named and designated above for various penalties, is to be turned to the church of Saint Lawrence, and most of all for services and other guild needs.
Nineteenth article. Which journeyman arrives from the field, he should according to custom send to the master, to the seniors for work, which is to be devised for him, so that he does not waste time in Lwów for nothing, and especially since this is also maintained in all crown cities.
Twentieth article. A companion who would, any, whether a turner or a ropemaker, want to work for himself before he finishes the guild, such a one will have to give six marks to the chest and abandon work until he first finishes the guild in the described manner and satisfies all duties; because the crown constitution of the year of our Lord one thousand six hundred and eleven enacted at the general Warsaw sejm also wants this, that loose craftsmen, who not having city law, take away food from guild craftsmen through their work, and do not contribute to any burdens and taxes and payments belonging, should be driven away from cities and the craft forbidden to them, to whom the protection of people of the spiritual state, as well as secular, should not serve.
Twenty-first article. If any brother accepted work of the ropemaker's craft for more than fifty zlotys, then such a one should admit another brother to his company. And finally, we all ropemakers now and hereafter always being in this guild submit ourselves, that whenever there is a need for a rope for the city town hall clock, then we will be obliged to make it and give it to the clock without any payment, and this by thanking for the grace and kindness of our councilors and wishing to gain them as patrons for this poor guild of ours for further times; [...crossed out...] we submit the articles to the weight and confirmation according to the law and custom of this city. Melchior, guild master of the ropemaker's craft. Jan Slama, second guild master of the same craft. Wojciech Mazurkowiec, table master. Stanisław Orłowski, second table master. Jakub Tokarz, third table master. Jakub Miechowski, fourth table master.
WE, HOWEVER, wishing to accede to the request of the above-named turners and ropemakers, as legally made before us, for the revision of these points and articles, we have added and appointed the illustrious Jakub Doleżyński, doctor of both laws, as well as the distinguished Marcin Anczewski, doctor of philosophy and medicine, physician to His Royal Majesty, our council colleagues, as distinguishing themselves with mature prudence and being well-versed in the laws of the fatherland. They, appointed and delegated by us in the above-mentioned manner, when they diligently considered the above-included articles and points and examined them from the perspective of both Polish and Magdeburg law, reported that all of them are consistent with the common and city law of this city, aiming at justice and good order of the guild, through which cities, especially in this province, as on the very border with enemies, and most importantly in this uncertain and dangerous time, are preserved and maintained; We, legally acceding to the request of the above-named and previously specified guild brothers,
[p. 5 / scan 6:]
considered that the above-included points and articles, all and individual, in all their contents, clauses, conditions, parts, wordings and provisions, according to the laws and privileges granted to this city, the metropolis of Ruthenia, long ago by the Most Serene Kings and Princes of Poland of blessed memory, as well as by our Most Gracious Lord now happily reigning over us, and especially those given regarding the public repository, approved by the public laws and constitutions of the Kingdom, should be approved and confirmed, as we hereby approve, confirm and maintain them under the laws and privileges of the city mentioned above, and allowed them to be entered into our acts, so that they may obtain the power and authority of eternal durability and validity; deciding and ordering by the power of this verdict and our approval and the above mediation, that the guild brothers should proceed according to the wording and order of these, not to oppose them in anything, but to observe and maintain them inviolably under the penalties reserved and described within. Furthermore, since it belongs to our office to take care that in the guilds, which are the offshoots of this city, order – that soul of things – be maintained, and old laws and ancient customs be sacredly and faithfully observed, for this reason, by our authority, which in this measure has long been granted and graciously given to us by the Most Serene Kings of Poland, we considered that to the above-included, these articles should also be added and attached, and we add and attach:
First. Since sieve-makers and comb-makers according to old laws belonged and should belong to this guild, about which the matter is currently being discussed, and now in these unfortunate times they have separated, then so that in this measure justice is done to the laws and old customs, all sieve-makers and comb-makers living at Lwów [...crossed out...] will have to exhibit and join [the guild] and the art described in the Stefanian privilege, and equally with turners and ropemakers satisfy all guild duties; or else for each quarter three zlotys, and this each one individually is to do, having put aside to the chest, they will remain free from taxes and other guild duties that may happen.
Second. And since there are many such merchants at Lwów who sell ropemaker's work, that is, ropes, cords, lines, reins, belts, halters, straps, whips and other similar things to booths, by which they are a great obstacle to the ropemaker's guild: therefore, preventing this, the same ropemaker's guild will have its booths with our explicit permission and payment of a certain rent to the [lontomerya] (which the lords economists are to agree and decide) for selling its work openly, and merchants under the loss of their goods will not be allowed to hinder the ropemakers in this.
Third. During the Lwów fair, if any ropemaker or sieve-maker, turner or comb-maker from outside our city arrived, he will have to report in this guild and give and count out two zlotys to the chest; which when he does, it will be allowed for him to sit with his work throughout the fair and sell it.
[p. 6 / scan 7:]
Which articles, added and attached by Us for the sake of good order and management in this place, the Lwów sieve-maker and comb-maker craftsmen, legally summoned for this purpose today and personally appearing before us, accepted in everything, agreed to them and submitted themselves to them in everything willingly, voluntarily and kindly. We, however, by the power of our laws, have reserved and reserve for ourselves the power of adding, subtracting and correcting the above-included articles and points by the power of this document. In witness whereof the seal of our Lwów office has been pressed to this. Issued from the acts of the Lwów council office. Samuel Kazimierz Kuszewicz, notary of the city of Lwów. [Place of seal].
And we were requested to deign to approve and confirm the said document with our Royal authority. To which request graciously acceding, we considered this document together with all its points, articles, clauses, knots, additions and conditions in general all worthy of approval and confirmation, as we also approve, confirm and ratify, hereby deciding that they obtain the power of due durability. In witness whereof we ordered this document signed by our hand to be strengthened with the crown seal. Given in Lwów on the Thursday after the feast of Saint Margaret, Virgin and Martyr, in the year of our Lord one thousand six hundred and fifty-three, the fifth year of our reign in Poland, and the sixth in Sweden.
John Casimir, King
Jan Krzycki,
Secretary to His Royal Majesty

Reading notes
Parchment document in the form of a libellus (4 sheets / 8 parchment pages), sewn with a green silk cord, on which the crown seal of John II Casimir is suspended in a metal case. The text consists of a royal confirmation transuming a document of the Lwów city council of July 15, 1653 (Feria Tertia ante Festum Sanctae Margarethae), containing the statute of the guild of turners and ropemakers in Polish and three additional articles of the city council concerning sieve-makers and comb-makers. The transumed text refers to the privilege of King Stephen Báthory of July 1, 1578.
