JOHN II CASIMIR
by the grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, Livonia, Smolensk, Chernihiv, and hereditary KING of the Swedes, Goths, and Vandals.
To all and each in particular, to whom it may concern, namely to the noble colonels, obershters, rotmistrzs, captains, and other officers, as well as their deputies and the entire company of military men, both of Polish and foreign nationality, of cavalry and infantry banners of any levy, serving us and the Commonwealth now and in the future, we make it known: that we, having regard and merciful consideration for the impoverishment and destruction of the Lviv suburbanites living on the Saint John ground under the dean's jurisdiction, which they reached first through frequent fires, then through the enemy of the Crown, and finally through the plague and other misfortunes and ailments; considering also their complete loyalty and steadfastness, which they showed to us and the entire Commonwealth [during the defense / massacre?] of the city of Lviv at the time of the violent enemy attack, when, having lost the rest of their goods and property, they risked their health for the salvation of the said city together with its citizens with courage, performing constant night and day watches, making sorties, and giving brave resistance to the enemy.
Therefore, wishing that after such losses of theirs, due to such steadfast loyalty, as well as [for?] the defense of the integrity of the aforementioned city, they could recover and help themselves all the sooner, we have decided to exempt them from all stations, quarters, overnight stays, food, transport services, and all other military exactions. Thus, acceding in this also to the parliamentary constitution of the year one thousand six hundred and thirty-five and subsequent ones enacted regarding this, we exempt them by this our letter, strictly forbidding [companies?] of the aforementioned knightly men and the entire soldiery, and absolutely ordering that upon the presentation of this our universal, no banner, whether cavalry or infantry, of any levy of Polish or foreign people, and none of them, shielding themselves with any assignments – which are not to be given for the city itself nor for its suburbs – nor excusing themselves with ignorance of the aforementioned law, under any pretext of marching or mustering, shall dare to stop, quarter, perform overnight stays, collect food, make marches, or take bread or stations, whether monetary or belonging to food, on this suburb, and especially on the ground of the dean's jurisdiction of Saint John.
And this under our strict penalty and the severity of the military articles, which we shall order to be infallibly and without any leniency extended and executed against anyone who would oppose our will and this order in this matter, upon the slightest complaint, and the damages caused to the aggrieved shall necessarily be compensated from the deserved pay. For which, for better faith, having signed with our hand, we ordered the Crown seal to be affixed. Given in Lviv, on the 19th day of the month of August in the year of our Lord 1653, of the reign of our kingdoms: the Polish in the fifth, and the Swedish in the sixth year.
