Privilege of King John II Casimir equalizing the rights of Lwów with those of Kraków and Wilno
In recognition of the loyalty and sacrifices of Lwów during the wars, King John II Casimir equalizes the city and its citizens with Kraków and Wilno in terms of rights, liberties, and noble privileges. The burghers of Lwów are granted the right to participate in royal elections, attend the Sejm, and freely acquire and possess landed estates.

[Folio 1r – entry into the Lwów castle court records from 1676:]
On the Wednesday following Rogation Sunday in the Year of Our Lord one thousand six hundred and seventy-six.
Upon the personal presentation by the noble and distinguished Wojciech Rędziński, vice-mayor, and Jan Stefan de Ryppa Ubaldini, councilor of His Royal Majesty's city of Lwów in Ruthenia, of this diploma of the Most Serene, of blessed memory, John II Casimir, King of Poland, etc., graciously granted to the same city for the purpose of equalizing it in liberties and prerogatives with the principal cities in Lesser Poland and with Wilno in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, this Lwów Starosty Castle Office has presented this diploma of the Most Serene, of blessed memory, John II Casimir, King of Poland, granted to the same city of Lwów regarding liberties, and ordered it to be entered into its records.

We, John II Casimir, by the grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, Kiev, Volhynia, Livonia, Smolensk, and Chernihiv, and also hereditary King of the Swedes, Goths, and Vandals.
We hereby announce to all and each in particular, to people of every status and condition, present and future: Such is the prerogative granted to all emperors, kings, and crowned princes by the supreme Ruler of men, GOD, and the viceregal power given above other mortals, so that they may not only store weapons of war in their armories to suppress enemies and keep rebels in obedience, but also possess laurel wreaths and palms in their treasuries to reward faithful subjects. And in such a way, their Majesty, on one hand armed with punishments, on the other adorned with rewards, was made indeed formidable to enemies, yet pleasant to friends. Both of these, under the happy auspices of the King of Kings, We also, whether in peace or in war, at home and abroad, have endeavored to fulfill and execute, and for the most part, according to Our strength, have fulfilled. And indeed, Our military expeditions have achieved happy

happy success under the signs of a favorable Deity, of which – even if We were silent – the enemy armies, partly slaughtered, partly dispersed, partly accepted into grace after accepting terms, bear witness in abundance; many provinces restored to Our rule by the right of postliminium will long bear witness; banners taken from enemies still attest to this. As for the rewards and honors bestowed by Us upon those deserving to Us and Our Kingdom, numerous individuals admitted to the most distinguished Knightly Estate, numerous individuals gifted by Us with rings in the manner of Roman knighthood, bear witness, and their descendants will not be silent. Lwów alone, the ornament and main fortress of Ruthenia, called so by the voice of the entire Kingdom, awaits its due reward for its immense loyalty, constancy, and readiness, proven so many times to Us and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth with visible evidence, daily presenting its unrewarded merits to Our Royal Majesty. For in these uncertain times of war, cruel even during peace itself, many a storm threatening Our Kingdom has shattered against the three rocks granted to the city of Lwów as a coat of arms by the highest Vicar of Christ on earth and has crushed its surging waves. Many an arrow shot by an enemy hand for the ruin of the Lechitic Eagle was taken upon itself by the NATIVE LION of that city. For Lwów, the slave-like Cossack-Ruthenian rebellion from the Zaporozhian and Tatar armed units, which had grown immensely eighteen years ago and was already heading blindly toward the destruction of the Polish name through the ruins of other cities and towns, was stopped by the sacrifice of its own property, and when it could not break its mad forces with weapons, it appeased them with gold and exhausted them with delay. Subsequently, repeatedly renewing this bravery, it courageously rejected the entire Ruthenia, stirred up ten years ago by these same Cossacks toward its own fall, dragging behind it – besides native legions – numerous infantry and cavalry troops composed of Muscovites, Lapps, and other barbarian peoples, armed even by their very winter, and vainly attempting to force an oath of allegiance to the Muscovite prince either by threats or promises, and it kept the loyalty once sworn to Us until the end. Further: The New Transylvanian Attila with reborn Huns

and an uncouth mob of villains besieging his city for a whole month – how gloriously the same Ruthenian Lion repelled them from the very gates with its resistance and offered the blood of its burghers to erase the presented agreements of defection rather than ink to sign them, and considered the loyalty sworn to Us more precious than its own salvation, this will be told to future ages not only by domestic chronicles but also by the bronzes of eternity. As for other services of this city rendered to Us and Our Commonwealth, as they are almost daily and commonly known, they do not require long mention. For Lwów, placed on the threshold of Poland and Ruthenia like a hammer and anvil, exposed to the changing fortunes of both provinces, experienced the fate of both. For when other cities of the Kingdom lived far from Mars and his thunders, Lwów alone refreshed Our camps, first at Zborów, and then those deployed near the town of Beresteczko, with abundantly supplied food, and supported the latter in time with wagons for transporting war machines; and most importantly: when the resources of the Kingdom were strained and depleted by the constant burdens of war, Lwów alone rushed to help several times and filled the gaps in the public treasury with contributed money; thanks to this immediate generosity, the hungry army, freed from the shackles in which it had voluntarily allowed itself to be entangled due to unpaid wages, set out with a free step to defend the Fatherland. These rare and distinguished merits of the city of Lwów therefore demanded from Us rare and extraordinary honors, so that We might finally crown its so numerous and great virtues with Our Royal Hand. Therefore, by the fullness of Our royal power and with the consent of all estates of the Kingdom gathered at the General Sejm in Warsaw, the same city of Lwów and all its citizens and inhabitants of the Roman Catholic, Armenian, and Greek rites (provided they are legally, according to the laws and custom of the same city, bound to Us and Our successors by an oath of allegiance and devoted), as well as their legitimate descendants and children to be born in future generations, all and each in particular, distinguished by virtues and leading a modest and honest life, We equalize, assimilate, and sanction, decide, and declare that they shall enjoy and use the rights, liberties, and prerogatives of the cities of Kraków and Wilno (regarding the rights of liberties and titles of nobility) for all eternity, and that they shall enjoy the same prerogatives that the aforementioned cities of Kraków and Wilno have hitherto enjoyed. By the power of which equalization

and admission to the rights and prerogatives of the Knightly Estate, the aforementioned Lwów citizens shall have full and comprehensive power and authority: to participate in the election of the MOST SERENE KINGS OF POLAND through two chosen and designated from the council office and to sign it; to occupy a place among the deputies at General Assemblies [General Sejms] and Particular [sejmiks]; to greet the MOST SERENE KINGS OF POLAND reigning at the time together with the land deputies by kissing the royal hand and to bid FAREWELL to THE SAME; to buy, acquire, and possess landed estates, both in the Kingdom and the states annexed to it, as well as in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, by hereditary right, mortgage, or any other fair and legal contract, and in the manner of the Polish nobility (with the preservation of all burdens for the benefit of the Commonwealth), and also to sell or mortgage the same estates back, or in any other way permitted by law to dispose of them; as well as to do, treat, and fulfill everything else, even if not expressed here, but considered expressed, by the law and prerogative of the cities of Kraków and Wilno, equal and unchangeable, without anyone's opposition or obstacle; by virtue of the Sejm constitutions passed at the General Sejms in the year one thousand six hundred and fifty-eight, as well as at the General Sejm held in the year one thousand six hundred and fifty-nine, and this Our diploma leading to the above (nothing, however, infringing upon the old rights, prerogatives, and immunities serving the city of Lwów by this letter). In witness whereof, We have signed this diploma with Our own hand and ordered it to be strengthened with the seal of Our Majesty for stronger testimony. Done and given in Warsaw at the General Sejm of the Kingdom on the [blank] day of the month of [blank] in the Year of Our Lord 1661, of Our reign in Poland [blank], in Sweden [blank] year. Privilege prepared in the form of a parchment book/codex (libellus) of 6 folios, bound in a red velvet cover with an archival paper sticker. The folios are richly illuminated – numerous coats of arms of voivodeships, lands, and counties of the Crown and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania are placed on the margins. On folio 1v, the coat of arms of Lwów in a decorative cartouche. On folio 1r, there is a later official entry of the Lwów castle court (officium castrense capitaneale Leopoliense) from May 13, 1676, regarding the registration (oblatio) of this diploma at the request of Mayor Wojciech Rędziński and Councilor Jan Stefan Ubaldini. In the formula of the year and day dating, blank spaces (in blanco) were left for the day and month as well as the years of the reign, which was a common practice in issuing solemn Sejm privileges; the catalog card and Sejm sources establish the date as May 30, 1661.
