JOHN CASIMIR, BY THE GRACE OF GOD, KING OF POLAND, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, Livonia, Smolensk, Chernihiv, and also hereditary King of the Swedes, Goths, and Vandals. We hereby announce to all and each person concerned that a paper document has been presented to us, signed by the hand of the well-born Jan Mniszek, Starosta of Lviv, and affixed with his seal, whole, sound, intact, and free from any suspicion, containing the confirmation of the donation of a certain plot of land lying in the Lviv suburb, bequeathed by the late Samuel [that is: Symeon] Semen Onufrijowicz, a Lviv suburbanite, for the erection and building on this land of the Church of St. John the Evangelist of the Greek rite for the venerable Father Symeon Siemionowicz, presbyter of the Church of St. Nicholas of the [Greek] rite, and his successors. And a request was submitted to us that we might deign to approve and confirm this document with our royal authority. The content of which document follows word for word [...] and reads as follows: Jan Mniszek of Wielkie Kończyce, Starosta General of the Ruthenian lands of Lviv. I make it known by this my record to whom it should be known, that having special regard for the fact that in this capital city of Lviv the glory of God should be multiplied and increased at all times and for long years, and furthermore considering [...] of a decent man in his testament at the time of his death before our Lviv land office, submitted to our castle acts and confirmed by His Majesty the King, our Lord happily reigning, the late Symeon Onufrijowicz [...] a suburbanite of the Lviv suburb calling himself the Krakow suburb, whose last will in his testament I attribute before this judicial castle office in [...] described in these words: “That I wish and desire to touch the farmstead which I have bought with my own and my wife’s money in Podzamcze, so that the glory of God may be celebrated there for the salvation of my soul and the remission of the sins of mine and my wife’s, that is, that a monastery and church be built there in the name of Saint John the Evangelist. So that this may come to its effect more surely, I give and donate this aforementioned farmstead to the venerable Father Symeon Siemionowicz, presbyter of the Church of Saint Nicholas with the Lviv Zamkowicze, in such a way and with the condition that he shall strive so that the aforementioned church be built there and that divine service be duly celebrated in it according to the ancient rite of the Holy Eastern Church”. I, therefore, having true and pious [...], at the earnest request and instance of the same Father Symeon Siemionowicz, the above-named presbyter, allow on the same named farmstead to found, build, construct, keep a printing house in it, and appropriate other benefits belonging to it. And if anyone out of their piety should donate any [...] to this monastery, both from lands and anything else, so that it may remain under the protection of the same [...] and in nothing at all times. Which monastery the venerable Father Symeon as provisor with the church Zamkowicze of Lviv as the elders should build and settle with monks [chernets] according to the ancient custom of the Holy Eastern Church and according to the rule of St. Basil the Great according to [...] of the order, in the exercise of prayers and sacrifices to the Most Holy Virgin Mary, to God for His Majesty the King, his son, and the integrity of the whole Commonwealth, they shall be obliged to pray. And the venerable Father Symeon above-named shall be the guardian and provisor in this monastery until his death, and after his death, all guardianship and provision shall fall upon all the monks who will live in this monastery with sincerity and understanding, that the monks shall be obliged to elect a superior of the congregation for themselves with the gentlemen [...] of Lviv with the permission and knowledge of the brotherhood at this church and monastery of St. John the Evangelist, having to assist with their own regarding all rescue, help, and funds according to the articles of the Holy Eastern Church confirmed by Arseniusz Żeliborski, Bishop of Lviv. Which legacies and donation I approve and confirm in everything, allowing that according to the express testament the monks may build the monastery and church above-mentioned on the ground aforementioned, and collect all the benefits described in this testament and have their authority for all time. Therefore, this church being on this ground, in which the glory of God will be celebrated, shall suffer no taxes, jurisdiction, or municipal taxes, however imposed, but shall have full security also for all time. For which, for better faith, having signed with my own hand, I ordered the seal to be affixed. Done in Lviv on the twenty-fourth day of the month of January in the year of our Lord 1663. Jan Mniszek of Wielkie Kończyce, Starosta General of Ruthenia. We, therefore, John Casimir, King, graciously acceding to the above-mentioned request, have deemed it right to approve and confirm the above-included document in all its points, articles, clauses, connections, and obligations, as we also approve and confirm it by this our letter, insofar as it does not contradict public law. Determining that this document should obtain the force and authority of due and eternal durability, with the preservation of our rights and those of our royal successors, as well as the Commonwealth and the Roman Catholic churches. In witness whereof, we have ordered this document signed by our hand to be strengthened with the royal seal.
