[p. 3 / fol. 1r:] [At the top, a gilded glory with the IHS monogram in rays] JAN TARNOWSKI BY THE GRACE OF GOD AND THE APOSTOLIC SEE, ARCHBISHOP OF LVIV, PERPETUAL ADMINISTRATOR OF THE ABBEY IN MOGIŁA (CLARA TUMBA) Placed by the ordinance of Divine mercy on the watchtower of pastoral exaltation, although we prove ourselves unworthy before His Majesty, we consider it first and foremost our duty and calling to ensure that the cult of almighty GOD is expanded and the salvation of souls entrusted to our care, redeemed by the precious blood of Our Lord JESUS Christ, is secured. Therefore, to all and each whom this concerns, by this present letter having the power for an eternal memory of the matter, we announce: That the very venerable Wojciech Chęciński, Dean of Gródek, parish priest of Komarno and Nawaria in our archdiocese, inflamed with the zeal of devotion and the celebration of Divine worship, desiring to more fervently propagate and expand the cult, religion, and adoration of the Most Holy Sacrament of the Divine Eucharist, decided to establish and erect in the parish church in Komarno a CONFRATERNITY under the invocation of the Most Holy Body of CHRIST, for the remission of all the sins of the people, modeled on the Confraternity erected in our metropolitan church of Lviv under the same invocation; and he humbly asked Us that we might deign to accept and approve this desire of his and decide according to the measure of this due request. We, acceding to the requests of the aforementioned parish priest and gladly desiring to see such a holy and glorious work established, and thereby by our office to support it and bring it to the desired goal and effect, so that the cult of this Divine Sacrament and of JESUS CHRIST himself residing and hidden within it [p. 4 / fol. 1v:] desiring to expand the highest adoration (latria) as much as possible, we deemed it right to erect, organize, and establish this association, commonly called a CONFRATERNITY, under the invocation of the same Most Holy Body of CHRIST, in the parish church of the town of Komarno according to the ordinance of the Supreme Bishops, with all prerogatives, privileges, immunities, indulgences, indults, concessions, authorizations, and ordinary and established graces, which the CONFRATERNITY first and foremost erected at the church of the Most Holy Mary above Minerva in Rome enjoys and possesses, with the preservation of the declaration of the Most Eminent Cardinals of the wording written below: The Congregation of the Most Serene and Most Reverend Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church, established by Our Most Holy Lord, by the providence of God Pope Paul V, for the reform of indulgences; desiring earnestly that the honor and cult of the Most Holy Sacrament might grow day by day, and that the faithful of CHRIST might be encouraged to this by spiritual graces, by the power of a special order of His Holiness, granted by living voice, decides and declares in accordance with the constitution of the same Paul III, that all and individual Confraternities of the Most Holy Body of CHRIST, wherever in the world hitherto erected by apostolic or ordinary authority, or in the future to be erected without a new or special other concession, communication, or aggregation, shall be and ought to be participants in all privileges, concessions, indulgences, authorizations, graces, and indults granted by name and explicitly by His Holiness to the Archconfraternity of the Most Holy Sacrament at Minerva through a brief issued in Rome at St. Peter's on the third day of November in the year sixteen hundred and six, and in the future to be granted by the Apostolic See, and they may and ought to benefit from, use, and enjoy all and each of them, provided only that it is proven that the erection of these confraternities was accomplished by apostolic or ordinary authority; with the preservation, however, in all other respects of the constitution of the aforementioned Clement VIII, notwithstanding any contrary ordinances. Issued in Rome on the tenth day of February in the year sixteen hundred and six. Signed: R. Cardinal Bellarmin, Anthony, Bishop of Anagni, Secretary. In Rome from the printing house of the Apostolic Chamber, the year sixteen hundred and six – we declare that they should benefit from them. Conditions and prerogatives, [p. 5 / fol. 2r:] which the said Confraternity of both sexes should attain, point by point from the original privilege of the said Confraternity, which was given by transumpt to the Confraternity in our metropolitan church of Lviv, of the wording written below, in the Polish language for understanding, along with the conditions we deemed it due to include in the following wording: INDULGENCES Of the Lviv Confraternity of the Body of Christ, partly from Paul III, partly from Gregory XIII, Popes and Supreme Pastors and Bishops, long ago granted to the Romans first: 1. To everyone wishing to enroll in this Confraternity, and at that time making a confession and receiving the Most Holy Sacrament of the Body and Blood of the Lord, a plenary indulgence (that is, the remission of all temporal purgatorial suffering for past sins and of ecclesiastical penances, which they give us at confessions after penance, and often not according to the greatness and multitude of sins and not according to the ancient laws of the Church of God, a certain reward) has been granted. 2. To one persevering steadfastly in this Confraternity and dying anywhere at the end of life, at least making a confession, a plenary indulgence has also been given. 3. On the day of Corpus Christi or in the octave of this joyful Catholic feast, to one going to the Lord's Table after confession, the same indulgence, and as others are accustomed to call it – a Merciful Summer [Jubilee], has been granted. 4. On every Friday, each member of this Confraternity who would recite seven Our Fathers and seven times the Angelic Salutation before the altar of the Lord's Sacrament for the exaltation of the holy Catholic faith and the eradication of heresy, shall receive one hundred days of indulgence. 5. On Maundy Thursday [to the brothers] of this Confraternity [making a confession ...] of indulgence and seven quadragenes. And quadragenes or [...] penance provide relief and satisfaction to the Church and the Lord [...], whoever would have to do and perform for forty days according to the ancient- [p. 6 / fol. 2v:] ancient ecclesiastical laws. And if on that same day at the altar of the Body of God he piously receives the Sacrament of the Body and Blood of the Lord, he shall obtain ten years and quadragenes. 6. Every month on the third Sunday of the month (when the procession of this Confraternity always falls), one receiving the Lord's Sacrament from the confraternity altar shall also receive ten years and ten quadragenes. 7. To everyone of this Confraternity who follows the Most Holy Sacrament in the monthly confraternity procession, one hundred days of indulgence has been granted. 8. Whoever of this Confraternity visits the Lord's Grave in the Lviv church, where this Confraternity was founded, in that Great Week before Easter, after confession shall have seven years of indulgence and seven quadragenes. 9. Whoever, whether of this Confraternity or of other faithful of Christ of both sexes, either follows the Most Glorious Sacrament to the sick, or if he has any obstacle, recites an Our Father and Hail Mary for that sick person, as often as he does this, each time he shall gain and receive one hundred days of indulgences. STATUTES Of the Confraternity of the Body of Christ, both Roman and Lviv, extracted by duty from the letters by the said two popes: [1. ...] so that with decent honesty the Most Holy S[acrament] [...] in the metropolitan church [...] parish or churches be kept and honorably led to the sick. Whatever this care may be more, it shall belong to the elders in the Confraternity or those appointed by them rather than to others. [p. 7 / fol. 3r:] 2. When they see or understand that a priest is going to the sick with the Most Glorious Sacrament, they shall apply diligence in this, either to lead the Lord's Sacrament themselves, or to send someone of the foremost in their house, or at least, especially the bishops, to recite an Our Father and Angelic Salutation for the sick at home or wherever, having knelt down. 3. Every month on the third Sunday of the month they are to go to the parish church for a procession with the Most Dignified Holiness and for Holy Mass about the same Sacrament; and to ensure that at the elevation of the Lord's Sacrament at this same Mass, several confraternity torches are lit, or that the whole Confraternity holds candles in their hands. 4. Every week all are by duty to say five Our Fathers and five Hail Marys in honor of this Most Dignified Sacrament and in memory of the five foremost wounds of the Lord Jesus. Which can be commonly on Thursdays. 5. Every year on the Friday after the feast of Corpus Christi they are to be at God's [...] in the morning with lit candles, in accordance with the Roman Confraternity. If there is a sermon at that time, it would be a pity to miss it. 6. They are to strive that the sick of the Confraternity are visited, prepared [for] the Sacrament of Holy Penance and the Body of the Lord, [...] who do not think about this, which care [shall belong] first to the elders. [p. 8 / fol. 3v:] [Traces of text, blurred and faded:] STATUTES [...] [p. 9 / fol. 4r:] absolution three times during life to each member of the Confraternity by any religious or secular (authorized by the archbishop) priest is granted by Pope Paul III, and from Gregory XIII until the time of entering this Confraternity, until the hour of death and until the feast or octave of Corpus Christi is explained and confirmed by declaration. Having included such a privilege, We also by ordinary authority grant forty days of indulgence and have personally introduced this same Confraternity to the same church. In testimony of which etc. Given in Lviv on the 26th day of September in the year 1664.
