John Casimir, by the grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, Livonia, Smolensk, Siewierz, and Chernihiv, and also hereditary King of the Swedes, Goths, and Vandals. We hereby make known to all and each person concerned: A parchment document was shown to Us, signed by the hand of the Most Serene, once of blessed memory Władysław IV, King of Poland, Our Dearest Brother, and secured with the hanging seal of the Lesser Chancellery, whole, intact, sound, and free from any suspicion, containing the confirmation of the [articles] of the Lwów Brewers. And a request was brought to Us that We might deign to approve, confirm, and ratify it under royal authority. The content of this document is as follows:
Władysław IV, by the grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, Livonia, Smolensk, Siewierz, and Chernihiv, and also hereditary King of the Swedes, Goths, and Vandals. We hereby make known to all and each person concerned: There was shown to Us in the name and on behalf of the mayors and the entire community of Our City of Lwów the document inscribed below, secured with the greater seal of the same city, containing the articles or order of the brewers, humbly asking Us to deign to approve and confirm it under Our Royal authority. The content of which is as follows:
Councilors of the City of Lwów. To all and each person concerned, whoever needs to know, we make it known: That we, observing our official duty to maintain good order in crafts and guilds, through which the glory of God is multiplied and cities take their adornment – just as the soul in a living body, so order among the common people brings about the preservation of the community and produces proper affairs and results – having also before our eyes the request and need brought to us by the honest burghers of the crafts of malting, brewing, and mead-making, being in one guild; having diligently considered how they, having lost due to the unfortunate fire that befell the city in the year of our Lord 1565, the privilege for guilds given to them by us and confirmed by the Polish kings of blessed memory, by ancient custom maintained their guild and unmixed order until this time both in the church of God and in the city, and also provided for the cannon assigned to the guild by the city according to their ability. Wishing to maintain such order among themselves, they conducted affairs according to the traditions of their ancestors, settling some disputes within the guild, and moderating others brought to us through controversies and appeals; and not being able, with the change of years and times and the arrival of a greater number of brothers in the guild of the mentioned crafts, to resolve affairs finally and thoroughly without written guild orders – the masters of the mentioned crafts, named below by their names and surnames, submitted to us articles and orders written on paper, according to which they could maintain the order of their guild and according to them proceed with the succeeding masters and journeymen of their crafts both in the guild and in the city, asking that we confirm them by the authority of our office and power and grant them force and authority through our privilege according to common law and the privileges of the city of Lwów. Which articles and orders are as follows:
First. First of all, the masters are to have one common [inn] in the city, in which every four Sundays they are to hold a meeting and keep a box with the belonging registers and with the money collected during the meeting. Each meeting is to be opened according to a cheerful and decent custom, during which guild affairs are to be conducted calmly, orderly, and worthily. To which meeting, if someone did not come at the usual hour or did not justify himself that he is in the service of the guild, then he should remain silent; and if a journeyman were to come earlier [...] excessively at the meeting, not to [bring] weapons or a sword from the city under the penalty of a stone [of wax], and [other weapons] under the penalty of half a stone of wax, coming and sitting down in the guild.
Second. The election of guild masters is to take place every year at the election of city offices in full by all brothers of all crafts,
[p. 2 / f. 1v:]
to which every year two maltsters, two brewers, and two mead-makers are to be newly elected with the knowledge of the city. And these, at meetings, are to have the power to exercise orders belonging to the guild; and if two brothers complain to the court about old matters, they are to judge the case. They are also to defend the journeymen, and the brother officials are to take the side of the righteous elders, so that one does not counterfeit the work of another, but only according to the guild register, as one joined the guild, under the penalty established by the guild according to its order they will be subject.
Third. So that deceased brothers may have comfort and help for their souls, they are to maintain an altar and a priest at any church and on every Ember Day celebrate a mass for the souls of the deceased brothers and sisters, during which after the Gospel the priest is to mention the deceased souls from the register. Both masters and journeymen should arrive at such funeral services and go to the offering. They are to maintain the same order at the funerals of a deceased master or sister, as well as journeymen, and at anniversaries. Also, after the election of city offices, they are to celebrate a sung mass for the Holy Spirit with organs and have clean vessels belonging to the altar. If anyone were not present at such masses without a valid reason and did not fulfill his duty, the master will be punished with a pound, and the journeyman with half a pound of wax.
Fourth. Regarding brotherly armor and guild contribution: they should properly provide for the cannon, gunpowder, bullets, various weapons, every axe, tinder in the town hall, and drivers for the defense of the city and all due equipment without waiting for an official order from their own resources.
Fifth. A journeyman or servant, whoever accepts a boy for apprenticeship, should present him before the guild master, and after teaching him for two weeks on trial, he is to come to the inn for a brotherly meeting, enter him into the register, and upon entry give one zloty of money to the brotherly box; and after being freed as a journeyman, he is to give to the box beer of a full brew or rather two zlotys with a bottle of infusion.
Sixth. No master of the mentioned crafts can be a foreign merchant entered in the register of companions, nor is he to maintain Jewish orders, nor brew mead from old seizure, nor conduct the craft with anything unworthy under the penalty of half a stone of wax. And if he wanted to accept someone for work of his own free will, he is to report him to one of the masters in the guild, first present a certificate of maintaining the ordinance, entry, and liberation, and such a companion should enter himself into the knightly register and give two zlotys of money.
Seventh. Whichever of the non-believers would like to become a master and be recognized as a master in his craft and in the guild, he is not to cause disorder among the brothers through [...] articles and journeymen, but show certificates from worthy people or provide a guarantee of brothers for himself under the penalty of two stones of wax, and pay 10 zlotys for the entry [...] and take the place designated by the guild master in the guild.
Eighth. Which maltster newly accepted according to the order described above will be recognized as a master among the brothers, after holding a treat: the new maltster master is to give half a mead, the new brewer master [half a mead and] a saber, and the new mead-maker a quarter of ice mead and a goblet according to the guild weight, and separately each should give fifteen zlotys to the box for guild needs with obedience from the learned liberation.
Ninth. No master can undertake two jobs in two households nor counterfeit, but only conduct one craft. All are to share the meads; maltsters are not to make spirits malt, brewers cannot divide beers in the markets into halves, and maltsters are to produce ten half-barrels each; in the craft, they are not to sell otherwise than their own, only after vespers and that with reporting to the office under the penalty of a stone of wax for guild needs.
Tenth. No master of the mentioned crafts is to intrude on the work of another and destroy it, nor is one to criticize another under the penalty of half a stone of wax. Brewers are to watch over the making of beer, and mead-makers over meads. To satisfy the needs of the city, as well as for Easter holidays, annual holidays, and the fair on St. Agnes' day, before each holiday it will be allowed for brewers to brew forty brews, and mead-makers twelve.
Eleventh. Gathering for meetings at the guild inn, masters and journeymen should give to the box: masters one and a half groszy, and journeymen one grosz for every Ember Day; [...] two groszy for all shortcomings, both masters and journeymen are to give. For offenses and transgressions against the brotherhood, the punishment imposed by the guild elders [...] he must bear; if they order him imprisonment, he must [...] and serve the punishment in the town hall.
Twelfth. If any of these craftsmen [...] dies, then for the salvation of the soul at the funeral service [...]
[p. 3 / f. 2r:]
he is to be entered into the register, giving twelve groszy upon entry, and should give two groszy to the brotherly box every Ember Day; and the guild with a procession of brothers will arrive at the funeral as soon as they are notified, and will instruct the priest to pray to the Lord God for this deceased soul.
Which articles the above-named: honest Walenty Clima, Grzegorz Chmielewski, Jan Jarmarkowicz of the malting craft; Stanisław Niedbała, Jan Kret, Jędrzej Niedbałka, Adam Przybyłko, Jan from the Tannery, Jan Dochewicz, Jan Farkowicz, Jan Koszerowic, Jakub from Brzozowa, Jakub Jurobina, Symon from the New Town, Wojciech Regulski, Mikołaj Gaidkowicz, Wojciech from Dziewięciory, Jakub Piątka of the brewing craft; Wojciech Litwinowski, Bartosz from Lwów, Jan Kupczowic, Wojciech Buczek, Jan Korzyński, Jan Zembowski of the mead-making craft, as founders of this guild, all and each separately submitted by them and read before this complete office of ours, asked and demanded that they be elevated to the power of the laws and privileges of this city.
We, therefore, the mentioned Lwów councilors, wishing that all those practicing these crafts in this city and in the suburbs together live in peace in this city according to the articles described above, as befits brothers of a guild city, and conduct themselves by the example of others, removing old negligence and disorder; first for the honor and glory of the Lord God Almighty, and then for the adornment and defense of this city, having called upon the help of God and His Holy Name, leaning on the laws and privileges which the Most Serene Polish Kings, Their Majesties, deigned to graciously grant and confirm to us and this famous city – we establish and found these guilds and the brotherhood of these guilds. As by the authority of our office and city laws we establish and found by this letter of ours, confirming and giving eternal power to the articles, customs, and orders described above in the privilege, preserving, however, for ourselves and our future successors according to times and needs the power and authority to explain, diminish, or change the above articles, according to the practice of other guilds and common law. For which, for better faith and certainty, we ordered the seal of our office to be pressed. Done in Lwów on the twelfth day of August in the year one thousand six hundred and twenty-seventh.
We, therefore, the mentioned King Władysław, graciously leaning to the request of the councilors of the entire City of Our Lwów, approve, ratify, and confirm the document inscribed above in all its points and clauses, as far as they are consistent with law and custom, establishing that it is to have eternal power and authority [...]. In witness whereof, we have signed this letter with Our hand and ordered it to be secured with the seal of Our Lesser Chancellery. Given in Kraków, on the 24th day of April, in the Year of our Lord 1633, of Our reign in Poland the 1st, and in Sweden the 1st year.
Which document of the Most Serene once King Władysław, Our Dearest Brother, when it was presented to Us [...], We, John Casimir, King [...], graciously leaning, approve and confirm the transcribed document in all points, clauses, and articles, as far as they do not contradict common law and are in use, establishing that it is to have eternal power and authority. In witness whereof, we have ordered this letter, signed with Our hand, to be secured with the crown seal. Given in Lwów, on the 10th day of September, in the Year of our Lord 1650, of Our reign in Poland the 2nd, and in Sweden the 2nd year.
Which document of the Most Serene once King John Casimir, Our Predecessor, when it was presented to Us in the name of the entire community [of brewers] of the city of Lwów by [...] and a request was brought to Us, we graciously confirm and ratify, establishing that it is to have due power and durability. In witness whereof, we have ordered this letter, signed with Our hand, to be secured with the crown seal. Given [...] on the 13th day of October, in the Year of our Lord 1671, of Our reign the 3rd year.

Reading notes
Parchment document in the form of a two-leaf gathering (bifolium). Transumpt and confirmation of King Michał Korybut Wiśniowiecki (from 13 Oct 1671) transuming the document of John Casimir (Lwów, 10 Sep 1650), transuming the document of Władysław IV (Kraków, 24 Apr 1633), which transumed the guild statute of maltsters, brewers, and mead-makers granted by the city council of Lwów (on 12 August 1627), referring to the original privilege of Sigismund Augustus from 1565. Preserved metal seal canister (custodia) on a red silk cord, inside only a crushed fragment of sealing wax. Autograph signature of King Michał Korybut Wiśniowiecki.
