[p. 1:] Augustus the Second, by the grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenian, Prussian, Masovian, Samogitian, Kievian, Volhynian, Podolian, Podlachian, Livonian, Smolensk, Severian and Chernihivian, and hereditary Duke of Saxony and Prince-Elector, etc. We make known by this our letter to all and each one, to whom it may concern, to people living now and in future ages. That a petition has been brought to us by our illustrious burghers of Lviv belonging to the congregation of beer brewing, along with a submitted extract from the books of the council office of the Lviv magistrate, containing an entry of points regarding the brewing of beer and vodka formerly expressed by the laws of the Crown Republic and various conditions, written according to the decree of the Most Serene King John Casimir, King of our [?] courts and Polish kings, with a request that we, as just and fair, confirm them in every point with our royal authority, which extract reads as follows: [...] In the year sixteen hundred [...] [p. 2:] Ordinance or resolution of the Lviv burghers, those deriving their way of life from brewing and retailing beer, written according to the decrees of His Royal Majesty Our Lord, with the addition of the noble magistrate of the city of Lviv, for the better maintenance of order therein and for the convenience of all estates and citizens of the city, at that time plunged into great destruction by enemy invasions and ravages, until the year of our Lord sixteen hundred and ninety-six. Although the city of Lviv, for the peculiar and courageous services often rendered to their Majesties the Kings, their gracious lords, and the entire Republic, and especially for the experienced [?] oppression during powerful enemy armies and countless invasions and the terror of a significant siege, has until this time received praise from all citizens of the entire Crown and has been endowed with rights and liberties above other cities due to such great courage, costs, and damages incurred, so that true and hereditary citizens, bound by oath to the same city, could enjoy such liberties. However, in these troubled times, there has been a great increase in those abusing such liberties, who, bringing no benefit or obedience to this city, and living in the suburbs under various protections, draw profits for themselves from everywhere, while forcibly and legally taking away and seizing from the burghers themselves the way of life according to ancient and present laws, bringing the city to great depletion and ruin. Making various beers in private houses, distributing and transporting them for sale throughout the city and suburbs, contrary to the laws [?] and decrees of Their Majesties the Most Serene Kings. Therefore, following the example of other Crown cities, especially the capital city of Krakow, with which this city is equalized by Crown constitutions, applying to this, and wishing to save the fallen legitimate burghers of the general public of this city in these difficult prevailing times for easier sustenance and preservation of their livelihood, and to lift up those falling in this way; because various guilds by virtue of laws and privileges [...] are in an honorable place, such a resolution concerning the innkeeping guild or spirits, on which the safest maintenance of human life depends, according to the constitution of the year sixteen hundred and fifty-nine under the title: "Assurance of our cities" and the decrees of His Royal Majesty our lords, especially issued in the year sixteen hundred and sixty-three, everyone by their own judgment [...] may consider as highly necessary, that it is necessary to prepare [...] [...] not workers, who make beer as mercenaries, but the burghers themselves, who immediately buy for their own money and are accustomed to produce, are obliged, so that remaining in good order, they observe that good, tasty, and useful beers for human life are made [...] First article. That the burghers, who according to the law will be engaged in this retail trade, in their [houses?] will actually make or retail beer, shall be of the Roman Catholic faith [...] [p. 3:] remain in the aforementioned holy Catholic faith and each of them shall show an official certificate of decent birth from an honest marriage, for to people of another religion, and especially to Jews, the brewing and retailing of such beer, as well as other drinks, is not permitted by the decrees of their Majesties the Kings. Second. That everyone joining this confraternity shall accept the city law upon the recommendation of the elders of the same confraternity, take an oath of fidelity and obedience to His Royal Majesty and their Lordships [...] according to the usual oath at the town hall, and pay what is due by way of compensation. Third. That he be a resident and possess open property, that is, acquired by inheritance or by way of purchase, at least for three thousand Polish zlotys [...] and accept possession in the court and resolutions of this city. Fourth. That from those cities where they make good beer, he shall keep two maltsters for this processing of malt and a brewer himself at that time, or bring them from elsewhere, as it was left to the discretion of the burghers. Fifth. If anyone of the brothers joining such a confraternity [...] bringing a son for various expenses ten [...], shall give a proper musket to the confraternity and half a stone of gunpowder. From the sons of those brothers who would have parents in this confraternity, this is not required in the future, that is, the son is to submit a musket and a quarter stone of gunpowder, while daughters should only give five marks [...]; however, they are to pay the contributions designated for the need of this confraternity, as often as the need arises, on an equal footing with other brothers. Sixth article. If any of the brothers, the burghers, under someone else's protection [...] and does not register in this confraternity, does not accept through city law [...] Seventh [...] beer brewing [...] Eighth. For better supervision of malt production, two inspectors [...] [p. 4:] the brothers of this confraternity shall designate from among themselves, who will inspect the production of such malt every week and report the matter to the elders at the assembly [...] Ninth. They should immediately beforehand pay attention to how much malt costs at a given time and at what price, so that by maintaining the proportion of the price of malt, the prices of beer are moderate and not excessive, and so that they are brewed tasty due to a higher or lower price. Tenth. That there are praiseworthy customs in some cities, so that each of the brothers has an equal benefit in his household and one does not make more brews than another, for example, that all brothers at least once every two weeks reach their turn and maintain such order among themselves in turn [...] Eleventh. The entire congregation shall strive with the noble magistrate and the entire commonalty so that no breweries remain in the suburbs, and indeed that they be immediately abolished according to the constitution and decrees of His Royal Majesty [...] Twelfth. And since the suburbanites, both of the Krakow suburb and the Krakow [Halych?] suburb, according to the decrees of their Majesties the Kings, should not have any breweries, but for retail at a fair price should take from the city from the burghers both beer and mead, as well as vodka and generally all drinks [...] Thirteenth. And since no assembly can exist for lack of authority, therefore this confraternity every year during general elections shall be obliged to elect two elders and present them to the noble council magistrate, and also to ask their Lordships for the appointment of patrons of their congregation [...] Fourteenth. That all sessions and deliberations should be conducted calmly and soberly [...] Fifteenth. [...] [p. 5:] When a matter is presented to which the brothers will be invited, then in order each one asked by the elders will express his opinion, and one should not jump ahead of another with words under the penalty of a pound of wax [...] Sixteenth. If anyone of the brothers, either publicly or privately, wishes to bring up any matter, he should first obtain permission from the elders [...] Seventeenth. Since all confraternities are established not only for the increase of the common good, but also for the glory of God, therefore this confraternity should also have its altar in the Campian Chapel in the metropolitan church [...] Eighteenth. If any of the brothers or sisters falls into such severe poverty that there would be nothing to bury his body according to Christian custom, then the brothers should show Christian mercy and a pious deed to the deceased brother or sister from the brotherhood chest [...] Nineteenth. This confraternity will also ensure that imported beers are retailed only in four houses in the city, and to foreign drivers in the suburbs [...] Twentieth. Whatever the elders and brothers of this congregation unanimously decide and resolve at their sessions for the increase of the common good and the preservation of the laws of this city, all brothers will be obliged to observe and execute under the penalty of half a stone of wax [...] Lastly. This aforementioned confraternity and all brothers remaining in it will be obliged in everything to comply with the decree of the Holy Royal Majesty issued in Janów in the year sixteen hundred and ninety-five between the noble and distinguished council magistrate and the city commune [?]. And so that these points and articles may have their greater weight and power for future times, just as they are written and described, we submit them to the noble and distinguished magistrate for approval and confirmation and ask for their approval. [Approval of the Lviv magistrate]: We, therefore, the Lviv councilors [...] have approved and confirmed these points, as they have been described in their content, by our authority [...] [p. 6:] we order that they be constantly observed. In witness whereof we have ordered this letter to be strengthened with the seal of our Lviv council office. Done in Lviv on Wednesday, on the very day of the feast of the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist, in the year of our Lord sixteen hundred and ninety-six. Mikołaj Ludwik Abrek, notary of the city of Lviv, with his own hand. Place of the seal. Extracted from the books of the Lviv council office. [Formula of approval of Augustus II:] WE, therefore, AUGUSTUS THE SECOND, KING, having graciously inclined to the above-mentioned petition of the illustrious Lviv burghers from the beer brewing confraternity, having considered this extract and the points described therein by the noble Lviv magistrate as just and serving the preservation of the laws and decrees of our Most Serene predecessors, we confirm, strengthen, and approve for eternal times. And since it was not reserved in the above-described points that various craftsmen having their separate guilds and rights should not belong to the aforementioned confraternity: because this confraternity has no other craft, but should only make beer and vodka, and craftsmen should not interfere with it [?], therefore we order by this our privilege that no craftsman shall dare to make beer and vodka, but only attend to his own craft; which our noble Lviv magistrate is also to observe under our royal grace and under the penalty of destruction [of equipment]. For which, for better authority, having signed with our own hand, we ordered the Crown seal to be affixed. Given in Warsaw on the 25th day of September in the year of our Lord 1698, of our reign the 2nd year. Augustus, King [with his own hand] Wacław Franciszek Trzciński, cupbearer of Sochaczew, secretary of the greater Crown seal, with his own hand. Reading notes

Parchment document in the form of a sewn booklet (4 parchment sheets, 8 pages of text and entries), originally bound with a silk cord (fragments of blue-green seal cord preserved; no preserved Great Crown Seal). The first page is richly calligraphed and decorated: at the top the coat of arms of the Republic with the Saxon coat of arms of the Wettins, on the left an eagle with the coat of arms of the Wettins. The document contains a transumpt of the guild statute (ordinance of 20 articles) from the Lviv council books of August 29, 1696, written by the city scribe Mikołaj Ludwik Abrek, based, among others, on the decree of John Casimir of 1663 and John III Sobieski from Jaworów of 1695. On f. 4r, a later sheet with a regest in German (18th century) is glued.
