Władysław IV, by the grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, Livonia, and also hereditary King of the Swedes, Goths, and Vandals, etc. We hereby announce by this our letter to all and each one whom it may concern, that a parchment letter was presented to us in the name of the bakers' guild of our city of Lviv, signed by the hand of the once most serene Sigismund III, our parent, and strengthened with the Crown seal, sound and intact, free from any suspicion. And we were requested to deign to approve and confirm this letter. The tenor of which letter is as follows:
Sigismund III, by the grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, Livonia, and also hereditary King of the Swedes, Goths, and Vandals. We hereby announce by this our letter to all and each one whom it may concern, that a parchment letter of the confirmation written below was presented and shown to us on behalf of the famous bakers of the guild of our city of Lviv, under the title and signature of the hand of the once most serene Stephen, King of Poland, and strengthened with the great seal of the Chancellery, sound, whole, and intact, free from any suspicion, containing permission for the sale of bread on specific days. And we were requested to deign to confirm, approve, and ratify this letter of confirmation with our royal authority. The sequence of which word for word follows and is as follows:
Stephen, by the grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, etc., and also Prince of Transylvania. We clearly announce by this our letter to all and each one whom it may concern, that the famous bakers of the guild of our city of Lviv presented and faithfully showed before us a certain parchment letter of the once most serene Sigismund Augustus, King, our predecessor, strengthened with a hanging great seal and signed by the hand of the magnificent Walenty Dębski, our kingdom's chancellor, sound, whole, and intact, free from any stain of suspicion, containing an extract of the privilege of the once most serene King Sigismund, found in the registers and books of our Chancellery, in which he approves the privilege of the once, of holy memory, King Casimir, our predecessor, the content of which has been described in this letter. The wording of which follows word for word and is as follows:
Sigismund Augustus, by the grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, etc., lord and heir. We clearly announce by this our letter to all and each one whom it may concern, that certain of our advisors requested us in the name of our city of Lviv to deign to enter into the books of our Chancellery, describe, strengthen with our seal, and order such to be issued. The wording of which follows word for word and is as follows:
Sigismund, by the grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, and also lord and heir of the lands of Kraków, Sandomierz, Sieradz, Łęczyca, Kuyavia, Ruthenia, Prussia, as well as Chełmno, Elbląg, and Pomerania. We announce by the wording of this document to all and each one whom it may concern, present and future, having knowledge of this, that the bakers of our city of Lviv, having appeared before our face, humbly requested that we deign to approve, ratify, and confirm them by our royal grace and generosity. For the eternal memory of the matter, the wording of which follows:
Casimir, by the grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, etc., lord and heir. We announce by the wording of this document to all whom it may concern, that when in past years we learned that our Lviv bakers were suffering disturbance and harm in their rights and liberties by certain people living inside and outside the city of Lviv through the extraordinary sale and vending of bread, it was our concern and effort that what was happening to the detriment and harm of our said bakers should be abolished and restored to a just and proper state. We have indeed made a certain prohibition against people who were so bold in the sale of this kind of bread, so that the revenues we possess from the said bakers would not be diminished. Although this prohibition was kept firmly and inviolably for some time, with the passage of time it almost went into oblivion, of which these same bakers testified before us today against the above-mentioned people who formerly caused them harm. Therefore, we decide and order to remedy this by our judgment and to preserve their rights in a proper state, granting only to them, and not to others, the full and free ability to prepare all kinds of bread, but only from well-sifted and cleaned flour, otherwise bolted, only on two market days, Tuesday and Saturday, on which days it will be permitted for them, as expressed above, and for all townspeople to sell only rye bread; on other days we wish this sale to be forbidden, it should be forbidden, and we hereby forbid it under the penalty of sixty marks of money to be enforced and kept for our royal treasury and under the penalty of forfeiture of the bread that will be found for sale against this our prohibition, which bread we wish to be turned over to the hospital for the poor, and this provision is to last only until our pleasure. In testimony of which our seal has been attached to this letter. Given at the general sejm in Piotrków, on the nearest Tuesday after the feast of the Most Holy Trinity, in the year of our Lord one thousand four hundred and seventy-nine. Stanisław, vice-chancellor. Public report of Stanisław of Kurozwęki, vice-chancellor of the Kingdom of Poland.
These letters written above, although they had their power only until the pleasure of the once fatherly majesty, recognizing them as perpetual in all their points, clauses, conditions, and articles as valid and pleasing, we approve, ratify, and confirm, deciding that they are to obtain the power of proper and perpetual durability. Furthermore, we order and command Stanisław of Chodecz, marshal of the kingdom, as well as the current and future Lviv starosts, that you preserve the said bakers in everything and defend and protect them in their rights, as befits the royal office, and that these bakers in the mills [grain] [...] and clean, otherwise not neglect the bolting at the miller's, and also that no harm should come to them; and if the matter of the consistory of the said city reaches you, we order and command that you preserve and defend the said bakers in everything, as befits the office, so that the bakers clean the grain in the mill, so that the bakers do not suffer harm nor the fraud of others occur, in our grace. In testimony of which our seal has been attached to this. Given in our city of Lviv, on Tuesday on the very day of the feast of St. Luke, in the year of our Lord one thousand five hundred and twenty-four, and of our reign the eighteenth. Report of the magnificent Krzysztof of Szydłowiec, voivode and starost of Kraków and the said chancellor, etc. Krzysztof of Szydłowiec, voivode and starost of Kraków and the said chancellor, etc.
These letters issued to the bakers by the once most serene Sigismund I, King of Poland, our dearest parent, yielding to the requests of our mentioned advisors, we ordered to be transcribed and marked with our open seal and issued to the said bakers of our city of Lviv, and we confirmed and ratified them in all their conditions, clauses, articles, and points, deciding that they should obtain the power of perpetual durability, as we also do by this document. Beyond these privileges granted to the said bakers by our predecessors, we also, out of our grace and kindness, deemed it appropriate to increase them with this prerogative: that no one, neither in the city nor in the castle suburbs and city jurisdiction, is allowed to stand against the bakers at the market to the detriment of this guild of our bakers, to buy, or to resell purchased goods to anyone, nor to bake and offer for sale wheat bread, cakes, and pretzels; if, however, anyone among the people, whether under city or castle jurisdiction, living in the suburbs or even in noble houses and manors, dared to do the above and was caught at it, wherever it might be, they are to be seized by the elders of the bakers' guild of our said city of Lviv together with a castle or city servant and punished as many times as they commit it. Furthermore, we decide that the number of bakers in this our city of Lviv should not be decreased or increased either by the local starost, or by the city magistrate, or by anyone else, but always for eternal times there should be only twenty bakers, neither more nor less. In faith and power of which and for clearer testimony, our seal has been attached hereto. Given in Warsaw, on the last day of the month of July, in the year of our Lord one thousand five hundred and seventy, and of our reign the forty-first. Walenty Dębski, chancellor of the Kingdom of Poland. Report of the magnificent Walenty Dębski, chancellor.
We, therefore, Stephen, the said King, yielding graciously to the request of the said Lviv bakers' guild, that we approve, ratify, and confirm these bakers' letters and other things contained therein, we approve, ratify, and confirm the above-written bakers' letters in all their points, clauses, articles, and conditions, intact, holding them as valid and pleasing, deciding that they are to obtain the proper power of perpetual durability and be inviolably observed by all. In faith of which we ordered this document signed by our hand to be strengthened with the Crown seal. Given in Lviv, on the 17th day of the month of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand five hundred and seventy-six. Stephen, King.
We, therefore, Władysław, the said King, yielding to the request of the said, we deemed the two letters of confirmation written above and what is contained in them worthy of approval and confirmation by our royal authority in all their points, clauses, articles, and conditions, intact, as far as they do not contradict common law, and we approve and confirm them by the power of this document, deciding that they are to obtain the power of proper and perpetual durability and be inviolably observed by all. In faith of which we ordered this document signed by our hand to be strengthened with the Crown seal. Given in Lviv, on the 17th day of the month of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand five hundred and seventy-six [!]. Władysław, King. Piotr Gembicki, Crown secretary.
We, therefore, John Casimir, the said King, yielding graciously to the request of the poor bakers and just, we deemed it right to approve and confirm the two letters of confirmation written above and what is contained in them in all points, clauses, articles, connections, and conditions by our royal authority, as also following the public confirmation of rights once made by us at our happy coronation, as well as Crown constitutions, especially those passed in the year one thousand six hundred and eleven regarding guilds existing in cities, we approve and, extending these rights and privileges, we confirm by this, deciding that they are to obtain the power and authority of perpetual durability and be inviolably observed by all. In faith and testimony of all of which we ordered this document signed by our hand and the Crown seal to be attached. Given in Warsaw, on the 16th day of the month of April, in the year of our Lord one thousand six hundred and fifty-two, and of our reign in Poland and Sweden the fourth year. John Casimir, King. Place of sealing. Of the Crown chancellor in a tin box pressed in red wax. Wojciech Goryński, provost of Kraków, secretary of His Royal Majesty.
The sequence of the second letter follows in this way:
Councilors of the city of Lviv in Ruthenia. To all and each one whom it may concern, we announce by this document that at a full session of our Lviv council office, the famous and honest guild masters of the bakers' guild of the city of Lviv, gathered in a large group, personally appearing, presented to us a certain order, prepared and written by the unanimous agreement of the brethren of the same guild, and requested its approval by the authority of our office. The wording of the words of this order of bakers expressed in it follows and is as follows:
First Point: Since for the Purchasing of Grain, especially Wheat and Rye, by resellers and tripe-sellers, who not only in the field beyond the trails but also along public routes, buying up grain, cause great dearness and discord in the city, because through this grain goes into a high price, the farmer in the manors or as it pertains to the Magistrate to the Act on the Sabbath before the Solemn Feast of the Holy Pentecost in the Year of our Lord one thousand six hundred and seventy. Under forfeiture of the purchased items, and under the government fine, so that such a brother of buyers, having first purchased rye while it is [?], as well as the Brothers of the Guild, did not buy white bread according to their need; And whoever of the bakers and flour-sellers is convicted of this, the fine not forgiven, white bread, forty, and tripe-seller also has the Bakers' Guild as an obstacle. Therefore, so that it is not allowed for Jews, both in the city and in the suburbs, under all invented jurisdictions, to bake white bread, and to sell tripe-sellers with their butter and with kosher lard.
We, therefore, councilors, yielding to this order and the requests of the bakers' guild, deemed this order worthy of approval and confirmation by the authority of our office for the better state and management of the same guild and for the benefit of the entire city, and we approve and confirm it. In testimony of which the seal of our Lviv office has been pressed. Given and done in Lviv, on the nearest Monday before the feast of the holy apostles Simon and Jude, in the year of our Lord one thousand six hundred and seventy-one. Mikołaj Czudniczowski, notary of the Republic of the city of Lviv. The seal of the same city pressed. Issued from the records of the Lviv council office.
We, therefore, Michael, the said King, yielding graciously to the request brought to us in the name of the famous elders, juniors, and the entire Lviv bakers' guild, we deemed the two letters written above, both parchment and paper, worthy of approval, confirmation, and ratification in all their points, articles, clauses, and conditions, and as far as they correspond to the law, we approve, confirm, and ratify them, deciding that they are to obtain the proper power and authority of durability. In faith of which we ordered this document signed by our hand to be strengthened with the Crown seal. Given in Lviv, on the 30th day of the month of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand six hundred and seventy-one. Michael, King. Stefan Hankiewicz, secretary of His Royal Majesty.
The tenor of the second letter is as follows:
John III, by the grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, Kiev, Volhynia, Podolia, Podlachia, Livonia, Smolensk, Severia, and Chernigov. We hereby announce by this our letter to all and each one whom it may concern, that letters, both paper and parchment, serving the bakers' guild of our city of Lviv, were presented before us, containing firstly the confirmation of rights, privileges, ordinances, and other articles concerning the good government of the same guild, signed and confirmed by the hands of the once most serene, of holy memory, John Casimir, Władysław IV, Sigismund III, Stephen, Sigismund Augustus, and Sigismund I, our predecessors, and strengthened with the seals of both the greater and lesser Crown Chancellery, and given and granted to the same guild from the ground by the most serene Casimir [IV], our predecessor, sound, whole, intact, free from any stain of suspicion. And we were requested in the name of the same guild by certain of our advisors that we also sign these letters with our hand and approve, confirm, and ratify them. The wording of which letters follows as such:
Casimir, by the grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, etc., lord and heir. We announce by the wording of this document to all whom it may concern, that when in past years we learned that our Lviv bakers were suffering disturbance and harm in their rights and liberties by certain people living inside and outside the city of Lviv without distinction by the manner and sale of bread, it was our concern that what was happening to the detriment and harm of our said bakers should be abolished and restored to a just and proper state. We have indeed made a certain prohibition against people who were so bold in the sale of this kind of bread that the revenues we have from the said bakers seemed to diminish. For then we issued a prohibition that none of them should sell those breads except for those true bakers; but although this prohibition was kept firmly and inviolably for some time, with the passage of time it went into oblivion, so that today these same bakers complained before us that these same people are disturbing their peace. Wishing, therefore, to prevent the harm and detriment of these bakers and to leave their rights in a proper state, we decide and order, granting only to them, and not to others, the full and free ability to bake and sell all kinds of bread, but only from well-sifted and cleaned flour, otherwise bolted, prepared, on specific days for the need of the said city of Lviv and its inhabitants inside and outside the city, with the exception only of two market days, on Tuesday and Saturday, on which it will be permitted for them, as expressed above, and for all to sell only rye bread. On other days we wish this sale to be forbidden, it should be forbidden, and we hereby forbid it under the penalty of sixty marks of money to be enforced and kept for our royal treasury and under the penalty of forfeiture of the bread that will be caught for sale against this our prohibition, which we wish to be turned over to the hospital for the poor, and this provision is to last only until our pleasure. In testimony of which our seal has been attached. Given at the general sejm in Piotrków, on Tuesday after the feast of the Most Holy Trinity, in the year of our Lord 1479 [in the text incorrectly: MCCCCXXIX]. Stanisław, vice-chancellor. Oral report of Stanisław of Kurozwęki, vice-chancellor of the Kingdom of Poland.
These letters, yielding graciously to the requests as just, since those written above had their power only until the pleasure of the once fatherly majesty, recognizing them as perpetual in all their points, clauses, conditions, and articles as valid and pleasing, we approve, ratify, and confirm.
We, therefore, John, the said King, yielding graciously to the request as just and in every respect reasonable, we deemed the said ordinance of the bakers of our city of Lviv and everything expressed in these letters above worthy of approval and confirmation in all their points, clauses, connections, articles, and conditions, and we also approve and confirm them by this, deciding that they are to obtain the power and strength of perpetual durability and be inviolably observed by all for eternal times. And because we were requested by these bakers of the guild of our city of Lviv, that in their craft they suffer the greatest harm and obstacle from various people outside their guild remaining in our said city of Lviv under various jurisdictions, and most of all from Jews; therefore we, caring for their compensation and wishing that the rights and privileges granted to them by our most serene predecessors and confirmed by constitutions remain in their power, we order and command both the jurisdiction of the starost and the magistrate of our city of Lviv, that they forbid and order to be forbidden to all those outside the said guild who would bake and offer for sale wheat bread under any name, both in the city and in the suburb; and all such, wherever they are found in any jurisdictions, [confiscate] the bread, and punish them as violators of our privileges exemplarily under our displeasure. In faith of which we ordered this document signed by our hand to be strengthened with the Crown seal. Given in Warsaw, at the general Crown sejm, on the 14th day of the month of May, in the year of our Lord 1689, and of our reign the 16th year. John, King. Wojciech Stanisław Chrościński, secretary of His Royal Majesty.
And today we were requested to deign to approve, confirm, and ratify with royal authority the Lviv council resolution made under the date on the Saturday before Misericordia Sunday in the year of our Lord one thousand six hundred and nine, in which it is reserved and forbidden to rye bread bakers not to buy pure wheat nor flour prepared from pure wheat, nor to mix it with rye, under the penalty of five marks as many times as it is broken by anyone. We, therefore, Augustus II, the said King, yielding graciously to the request made before us in the name of the famous elders, juniors, and the entire Lviv bakers' guild, we deemed the two letters of our most serene predecessors written above and the point of the Lviv council decree worthy of approval, confirmation, and ratification in all their points, articles, clauses, and conditions, and we also approve, confirm, and ratify them by this our letter, deciding that they should obtain the proper power and strength of durability. In faith of which we ordered this document signed by our hand to be strengthened with the Crown seal. Given [...] on the 22nd day of the month of April, in the year of our Lord 1712, and of our reign the 15th year.
August, King

Parchment document in a very large format, preserved in good condition. On the upper margin, a richly decorated, painted royal title with colorful coats of arms of the White Eagle, the Vytis, and the Wettin coat of arms. A great Crown seal in a protective metal box (red wax/lacquer, surface damaged/cracked) is attached to the diploma on a silk cord. The text contains an extensive transumpt of documents of kings Michael Korybut Wiśniowiecki (1671) and John III Sobieski (1689), who in turn transumpted the privileges of their predecessors: Casimir Jagiellon (1479), Sigismund I (1524), Sigismund II Augustus (1570), Stephen Báthory (1576), Władysław IV (1633), John Casimir (1652), and ordinances of the Lviv city council (partially in Polish).
