[f. 1r] COUNCILLORS OF THE CITY OF LWÓW METROPOLIS OF RUTHENIA To all and everyone [...] we make it known that having appeared personally before the residence [...] of the Lwów council, the honorable Wojciech [...]ski, Jerzy Bartmański, guild masters, [...] Stanisław Jabłoński, Jan Walkorowicz, table seniors, Kasper Lepiszewicz, table [...] Ciemiecki, Grzegorz Bryndzewicz, Jan Kordysz, Sin Lepiszewicz, Wojciech Kozłowski, Piotr Tedyszewicz, Krzysztof Czaban, Wojciech Syderowicz, Sebastian Urbański, Maciej Sołowiński, Matyasz Szepeliński, Matyasz Hrzebiecki, Jakub Myśleniewicz, Józef Lizoniowski, Kazimierz Jodłowski, Kasper Niewrzałkiewicz, Michał Wolny, masters, Maciej [...]ski, Tomasz Hrzebiecki, Jędrzej Hahłowski, Sebastian Opuchlak, elders, and the younger [...] of the butchers' guild of our city, having regard to the ancient ordinances and privileges of their guild, granted and serving for good order, and graciously confirmed by the privileges of the Most Serene Kings of Poland, Gracious Lords, upon which was founded [...] not only remained intact, but thanks to the consideration and establishment – according to the circumstances of the time – of the best order, could be most surely multiplied, applying therein to the decree of the blessed memory of the Most Serene John III, King of Poland, issued in Jaworów in the year of our Lord one thousand six hundred and eighty [third?], ordering that henceforth no guilds nor their guild masters, guild members, and elders shall change or improve ancient guild articles and ordinances without our express consent, and even less so formulate new articles and privileges without ordinary knowledge [...] [f. 1v] following the example and model of other guilds of their craft in the more important cities [...], with good [...] and their unanimous consent, [...] submitted to us, and by the authority of our office granted by the Most Serene Kings of Poland, Gracious Lords, requested to approve in the manner described below. First: regarding the quarterly sessions, we have agreed that every annual quarterly session shall take place without any delay or excuse, in the presence of two master gentlemen delegated from the guild and the gentlemen companions – as many as shall be found in the companion register at that time – according to the designated dates, that is: the first session on Ash Wednesday, that is, Ash Wednesday; the second on the feast of the Descent of the Holy Spirit, that is, Pentecost; the third on the feast of Saint Michael [...]; the fourth session on the feast of Saint Lucy the Virgin; at which sessions the article or companion letter shall be read before all companions. If any of the companions, both elders and younger, summoned by their host fathers or elder companions [...], does not appear and does not present a valid justification for his absence, he shall be obliged to pay a fine of one, and a second [to the box] [...]. Both elders and younger, as many as shall be found in the inn, [...] each of them personally at every quarterly session, on the dates described above, present and [...] to the companion box shall give eighteen groschen. The money collected from such sessions [...] from the mentioned duty, not for anything else, but exclusively for companion torches made of spring wax weighing three pounds – so that always one after another they are in readiness – should be used. The use of these torches is established primarily for the funerals of guild brothers and sisters, as well as deceased companions, at which the companions should assist with such light; for which service the successors or executors of the deceased masters, mistresses, or their children, as well as companions, are obliged to pay two zlotys to the companion box. And which companion during the companion session would not behave modestly and humbly and would give other companions cause for a quarrel, every such person as acting against the order shall be handed over to prison, and then judged in the guild with a penalty of two fines, of which half [f. 2r] to the president, and the other to the companion treasury [...] should be punished; he who would consider himself wronged by the guild verdict has the right to appeal to the president and stand before him. Also, a companion in the inn, [...] who would even only indecently lean his hand on the table, shall be subject to a penalty of [...] groschen. And which companion during the session would not respect the host fathers or [...] companion [fathers], offend with a careless word, with anger draw his hand at them or strike the table with his hand, he shall be punished with a lordly penalty, at the discretion of the host fathers and companions. If there were to be found such among the companions who would prove stubborn, would not want to submit to the penalty and would not show obedience to the companion resolutions, such a one in the inn shall be punished with "herrings" [...]. And if [...] he could not be punished in the inn, immediately for his insolence he shall receive fifty lashes from the host fathers and companions. SECOND. That the host fathers at every quarter-day shall manumit apprentices worthy of manumission in the presence of the guild masters. Apprentices to be manumitted should, before the very submission, show a birth certificate and a certificate of legitimate and honest birth, and then upon their manumission give to the butchers' altar in the Lwów cathedral church [...] weighing [...] pounds, and according to their means prepare a treat for the companions. If such an apprentice, having reached the time of manumission, could not afford the mentioned costs necessary for manumission, then he shall ask his principal for support, and the principal shall pay for him as much as is needed; the apprentice, after manumission, shall serve his master until he has worked off these expenses and paid them off. THIRD. That no companion, both elder and younger, due to the danger and fire accidents often happening in the house, shall dare to smoke tobacco under penalty of one fine, of which half falls to the president, and the other half to the companion box. FOURTH. If any of the impoverished companions fell ill and had nothing to support himself at his master's, that in such a case [...] [f. 2v] provide him with care; the same should be understood about the expenses for the funeral of a poor deceased companion – the companions should bury the body of the poor companion at the expense taken from the companion box. The things remaining after the deceased poor companion, whether clothes or any equipment, are to be sold, and the money obtained for them the elder companions should allocate for the soul of the deceased, with the preservation of the rights of the successors, if any are found, as well as the municipal law serving the city. FIFTH. And because in domestic order and cleanliness there are significant deficiencies among the butchers' journeymen, namely: they act carelessly in the craft, keep vessels in disorder, keep axes, cleavers, choppers, troughs and other [tools] untidily in the house, behave indecently, do not sleep in their masters' houses, skip dinners and suppers, associate with lewd women to the scandal of the journeymen, [...] in order to maintain modesty, decency and all good order among the guild journeymen for all time, every four weeks a revision shall be carried out in the houses. Guild masters should also watch over their journeymen, keep them in discipline, and those associating with inappropriate companions and not caring for penalties and admonitions [...] accuse to the master; do not wait for the journeymen with supper longer than an hour at night, unless the journeyman, due to an urgent matter of the master on the road, could not appear on time for supper – in such a case, one should wait for him with supper or decently keep it for him. SIXTH. As regards common obventions, commonly called tips, in which there has been significant disorder so far – so that in the future the journeymen know what belongs to them, and nothing else appropriate for themselves, they are allowed primarily to take small intestines from an ox, if their master does not need them; horns from ox hide, which, however, under no circumstances are they to knock off or tear off from the hide under penalty, as the merchant purchasing the hide pays the master for the hides, and the journeyman separately for the horns. Similarly, ox roots and bladders; however, they cannot under any circumstances process tendons from ox feet; from a calf and a ram, tripe; from a pig, bristles. Furthermore, it will be allowed for the journeymen to [slaughter] oxen, pigs, rams, calves at the lords' and burghers' [...], however, with the permission and knowledge of their master; and if- [f. 3r] any journeyman proceeded to slaughter without the knowledge [of the master], he should bear for this the penalty of giving the earnings to the companion box. It is reserved, however, in this point, that no companion, whatever he earns from the above-described tips, shall take this into his own pocket, but put everything into the box; with which money at the designated time the master shall justly divide his journeymen – if there are several of them – according to the work of each of them. SEVENTH. Just as according to custom companions should return lanterns to the inn, so besides this they have the duty to keep in readiness in their masters' houses two or three lanterns. EIGHTH. According to ancient custom, no companion, having served his time with a master, should wander around foreign inns, but remain in his own inn and sleep there, until he either sets out on the road or hires himself to another master. And having settled with his master, he shall not strike a bargain for any other service anywhere else, but only in the inn on the ordinary Sunday, as is fitting. NINTH. Accounts of their companion income and expenses should be submitted by the companions in the guild during the annual guild accounts in the presence of the gentlemen patrons. At the quarterly holy masses, which every quarter according to ancient customs used to be celebrated in the Lwów cathedral church before the butchers' altar, all companions, both elders and younger, are obliged to be present. TENTH. Finally, according to the ancient custom and resolution of the butchers' guild, by virtue of which it was introduced that at the beginning of the first quarterly inn on the introductory Wednesday, that is, falling on Ash Wednesday, the butchers' journeymen used to hold their treats, weddings and parties in the inn until the first introductory Sunday of Lent, therefore this ancient transmitted custom for further times without any obstacle has and should continue. After that first quarterly inn, according to the glorious resolution of the guild ancestors, holy masses are to be celebrated: that is, the first holy mass before the altar of the Miraculous Blessed Virgin Mary in the church of the reverend fathers of the shod Carmelites in the Halicki Suburb; the second in the church of the reverend fathers [f. 3v] Bernardines before the altar of the blessed John of Dukla; the third in the church of the reverend fathers of the Reformati; the fourth in the church of the reverend fathers of the Trinitarians in the city – according to the foundation made by the guild brothers and companions on the tenth day of March in the year one thousand seven hundred and thirteen and in the sum of [...] collected. We, therefore, the said councillors of the city of Lwów, having considered well and recognized that the mentioned points or resolutions serving the guild order, especially concerning the journeymen of the said guild, submitted by unanimous agreement by the honorable guild masters, table [masters], elders, masters and the entire butchers' guild of our city, do not contain anything contrary to common law or the privileges of this city, but include only good and glorious guild order – therefore we approve the mentioned articles in all points, conditions and obligations, and each one separately, by the authority of our office and by the power of the laws and privileges granted to us by the Most Serene Kings of Poland and allow them to be entered into our public acts; with the reservation, however, of the right of appeal to the mayor's office for the complainant among the guild journeymen in case of being wronged, and with the preservation for us and our successors of the right to improve or change those articles according to the need of the time. Done in Lwów, on Wednesday before the feast of Saint Valentine the priest and martyr, that is, on the thirteenth day of the month of February in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and twenty-six. And for better faith, the seal of our Lwów council office has been impressed. Mikołaj Ziętkiewicz, Doctor of Theology, public notary on behalf of the Holy Apostolic See and the city of Lwów, with his own hand. Issued from the acts of the Lwów council office. Reading notes

Parchment document in the form of a 3-leaf quire (sewn). The catalog card incorrectly states '1 sheet', while the document counts 3 sheets/leaves (which was also noted in the archival note on f. 1 and 8: 'Ha 3 аркушах'). The parchment is worn in places, stained, and has losses at the edges and folds (especially on f. 1v and 2r). At the bottom of leaf 3v, a cut is visible for the impressed seal of the Lwów magistrate (the seal itself has not survived or left only a trace). The document contains 10 numbered articles (from First to Tenth) regulating the functioning of journeymen and companions of the butchers' guild (sessions, manumission of apprentices, ban on smoking tobacco, aid and funerals for poor companions, order in masters' houses, tips and parts of animal carcasses due to journeymen, lanterns, overnight stays in the inn, annual accounts, Shrovetide parties, and quarterly masses).
