[At the top left, an impression of a seal/ink stamp with the White Eagle under a crown]
Augustus II, by the grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, Kiev, Volhynia, Podolia, Podlaskie, Livonia, Smolensk, Siewierz, and Chernihiv, and hereditary Duke of Saxony and Elector, etc.
We hereby announce to all and everyone to whom it may concern that there has been presented before us a parchment letter signed by the hand of the Most Serene John III, King of Poland, our predecessor, and confirmed by the Great Crown Seal, whole, intact, and beyond any suspicion, containing the confirmation of certain lands and liberties serving the pious monks of the Greek religion of the Domaszew monastery, the content of which letter is word for word as follows:
John III, by the grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, Kiev, Volhynia, Podolia, Podlaskie, Livonia, Smolensk, Siewierz, and Chernihiv. We announce by this letter of ours to all and everyone to whom it may concern that there has been presented before us an extract from the privilege of our predecessor, King Władysław IV, confirmed by the authentic Lviv castle seal, by which privilege certain lands and liberties are granted to the pious monks of the Greek religion of the Domaszew monastery. At the same time, the pious Fidary Stecka and Józef Skulski, monks of the same monastery, have petitioned us to confirm this privilege with our royal authority and to preserve them in the lands and liberties granted by King Władysław. And the sense of this privilege is as follows:
Władysław IV, by the grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, Kiev, Volhynia, Livonia, Chernihiv, Smolensk, Siewierz, and hereditary King of Sweden, the Vandals, and the Goths. We announce to all and everyone to whom it may concern that we, observing the great destruction of the monastery and church in Bor Domaszewski, situated in the county and starosta district of Bełz, caused by the Tatar invasion, as well as the poverty of the same monastery; thus, preventing it from further destruction and devastation, we have decided to give and grant to the pious hegumen Martyry and the monk Abram Tymoszewicz of the Order of Saint Basil, not being in union, now and for all time to come to the monks, as we do give and grant by this letter of ours [the same monastery], which monastery in Cerkwica remains intact and proper [...] described and with signs cut into trees, starting from the Łaśniczyn swamp, along the Dzioły road to the stream, along the stream to Rogik, thence to the majny, from Kuroczka past the Bachry huts, to Szymonowy Creek, from the creek to the sandy Łaśniszczyn swamp, remaining inside in the middle, with all that is described and partitioned inside it to the tenants of our same starosta district, as well as from the Domaszew and Chlewice hamlets, sworn and trustworthy men appointed by royal command, and many other common people demarcated (as by mounds, but by described signs and crosses cut into significant trees), marked and surrounded by boundaries, with proper lands, fields, meadows, hayfields, apiary, threshing floor, grange, small mill, Wrotniacki pond, two fish ponds for the monks' sustenance, and a constructed pond, a brewery for brewing-
[p. 2 / f. 1v:]
-beer for the monks and free distillation of spirits for the sole need of the monastery, and not for sale. In the same church village on monastery lands, with the free settlement of craftsmen without any tribute or duties to our starosta districts, such as the need might indicate for the monastery's convenience; and we forbid other people, simple Domaszew and Chlewice peasants with wives and children, from building in the said church property for their own convenience to the detriment of the monastery, and from erecting any huts, and we order the monks to expel such people without any fear and to ruin their huts and dwellings for all time. Likewise, and furthermore, with the annual tithes belonging to the same monastery and granted [...] granted tithes [...] behind the spring to the first willow, leaning against the peasant meadows, lying; in the second place, an addition from the peasant measurements with a whole field lane separated at the end of the fields; also in the Domaszew and Chlewice forests and wildernesses, free cutting of wood suitable for the repair of the monastery and for fuel. Likewise, with all other appurtenances, described points, and liberties, we graciously give and grant to the aforementioned pious hegumen Martyry Tymoszewicz and others with them, now and for all time to come after them, to hold, use, and reside. At the same time, finally, and having weighed this matter most necessary of all, so that during the proper holidays according to the invocation of one church of St. Nicholas, the other of the Assumption of the Most Holy Virgin, and also if God later helps to build a third church, whatever it might be, or even a fourth, and to celebrate holidays at them according to proper custom for the people and the common assembly coming from all sides for the indulgence and service to the said Domaszew monastery, it shall be permitted for everyone from the surrounding areas, towns, and villages to bring bread, butter, fruits, and all things for eating, as well as beer, wine, mead, spirits, and other drinks for drinking, and to sell them without any fees or obstacles at the mentioned monastery, as long as there is a need, both before the holiday and after the holiday for the whole day or even longer, forever. Guarding this with our royal authority, penalty, and great disfavor, and with this privilege being more extensive and important than the first, so that no one dares – neither the noble tenants of this starosta district of ours, nor the venerable bishops, protopopes, vicars, local clergy, noble and simple, common people – to cause any obstacles, invasions, claims, and other damages to the above-mentioned monastery and monks, and we forbid anyone to oppose all the above-described rights and liberties forever and admonish everyone; which monastery of the Greek religion remains and is to be obedient to the venerable Metropolitan of Kiev, not remaining in unity with the Holy Roman Catholic Church, and to no one else, preserving our rights and those of the Republic in their entirety. Promising that we and our most serene successors will preserve the mentioned pious hegumen Martyry, the monk Gerazym Tymoszewicz, and others with them now living and for all time to come
[p. 3 / f. 2r:]
monks in all the described lands and points, having given them this in eternal possession, in their entirety and intact, which our most serene successors shall also do. Which mentioned provisions, on par with other regulations, we confirm and strengthen by this royal authority and power of ours. Also, we take the mentioned Domaszew monastery with all its appurtenances and the above-described points, fields, meadows, lands, gardens, church village, small mill, churches, holidays, and monks under our eternal royal protection, obliging them, for the dignity of us and our successors, to implore the Most High God in constant prayers and bloodless sacrifices during the elevation of the Most Holy Host, and in return, in the name of our most serene successors, we promise by this royal diploma of ours that we shall preserve them in the above-described points, duties, conditions, and liberties in their entirety and in all things intact. For which, for better faith and certainty, we have ordered our Great Crown Seal to be affixed to the signature of our royal hand. Done in Warsaw on the tenth day of the month of March in the Year of Our Lord 1648, the 6th year of our Polish and Swedish reign. Władysław, King. (Place of the seal). Andrzej Bujalski, Secretary to H[is] M[ajesty] the King.
We, therefore, King John, having graciously acceded to the request of the above-named monks of the Domaszew monastery, confirm and strengthen the inscribed privilege, insofar as it is not contrary to common law, in all points and conditions by our royal authority and this present privilege, and we preserve the same monks in their lands and incomes, as well as the described liberties. And furthermore, so that they may be free to elect an hegumen from among themselves each year on the new Ruthenian year, just as such elections are maintained in other monasteries, we grant them this liberty for future times. For which, for better faith, the Crown Seal was affixed to the signature of our hand. Given in Warsaw on the 24th day of the month of February in the Year of Our Lord 1690, the 16th year of our reign. John, King, by his own hand. [By the effort] and seal, the confirmation of the privilege of King Władysław IV, serving the Domaszew monastery situated in the Bełz county. Wojciech Stanisław Chrościński, Secretary to H.M. the King, by his own hand.
We have been petitioned by our councilors in the name of the Domaszew monastery to graciously confirm, strengthen, and ratify the above-mentioned privilege with our royal authority. We, therefore, King Augustus, having graciously acceded to the mentioned request, have decided to confirm, strengthen, and ratify the expressed privilege, as we do confirm, strengthen, and ratify it in all points, conditions, clauses, and duties (insofar as they exist and are applicable), and we preserve them intact by this letter of ours regarding the above-expressed holidays or rather indulgences, by which they have approached and joined the Holy Roman Catholic faith, wishing it to have force never to be violated. For which, having signed with our hand for better faith, we have ordered the Crown Seal to be affixed. Given in Białystok on the 5th[?] day of the month of February, in the Year of Our Lord 1727, the 30th year of our reign.
Augustus, King
