[f. 1r] [Later note at the bottom:] Shooting range [f. 2r] [Coat of arms drawing: Shield with the coats of arms of Poland, Lithuania, and Saxony, surrounded by panoplies – cannons, drums, and banners; shields with coats of arms on the sides] AUGUSTUS II, BY THE GRACE OF GOD, KING OF POLAND, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, Kiev, Volhynia, Podolia, Podlaskie, Smolensk, Siewierz, and Chernihiv, as well as hereditary Duke of Saxony, Prince and Elector. We hereby announce by this Our letter to all and singular whom it may concern, and who shall receive knowledge of this: That ever since, by the favor of Heaven, We were called to the scepter of the most illustrious Kingdom of Poland and deserved to be adorned with the Royal Crown, We can have nothing more in Our desires and wishes than to abundantly care for the benefits and advantages of Our subjects. Therefore, when We learned that Our City of Lwów is so well-trained in all arts of municipal administration, both in war and in peace, that it deserves the name of the bulwark and invincible shield of almost the entire Kingdom of Poland, and that it escorted those who recently set out for the holy war against the Ottoman power with all proofs of honor and glory; as soon as it was reported to Us by certain of Our advisors, then assisting at Our side, that this same city relies primarily on the Shooting Brotherhood and abounds in constant practice of that art, and the superiors of that Brotherhood themselves, the noble and worthy men Jan Michał Złotorowicz [and] Józef Kazimierz Wilczek, Our secretaries, councilors of Lwów, having appeared before Our face, presented the privileges concerning this kind of exercise and the immunities related to them, observed almost by the City itself, granted by the Most Serene Predecessors, namely Sigismund Augustus, and subsequently confirmed by a solemn diploma by the Most Serene John III [f. 2v] in Warsaw on April 8, 1677, signed by his hand and affixed with the Seal of the Kingdom, and asked Us through these same advisors of Ours that We might deign to confirm, approve, clarify, and supply all deficiencies in these their rights and privileges with Our Royal authority. The content of that letter is as follows: John III, by the grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, Kiev, Volhynia, Podolia, Podlaskie, Livonia, Smolensk, Siewierz, and Chernihiv. We hereby announce by this Our letter to all and singular whom it may concern: Although at the very beginning of Our happy Coronation, just as for all estates and Our subjects in general, so in particular for Our City of Lwów, We confirmed all rights and privileges with an oath, laws, and letters, with which it is customary to strengthen fluid and fallible human memory with the strongest bonds. Nevertheless, We consider it the duty of Our royal office that those who, in the uninterrupted course of time, and even moments, have deserved well of Us and the entire Commonwealth with constant loyalty, obedience, strength, and property, should also experience from day to day greater proofs of generosity and benevolence from Our Royal Majesty, both in wishes and in letters, whenever the opportunity of need arises. For this reason, We surround Our aforementioned City of Lwów and its requests with care all the more zealously and with greater obligation, the more We are convinced from the heart that it strives with devotion for its preservation and defense and for proficiency in the art of war against all attacks of enemies. Therefore, when the noble and worthy Jan Stefan Ubaldini, councilor and then delegate of the City of Lwów, as elder of the Shooting Brotherhood, presented before Us an original parchment letter containing the confirmation of the rights and privileges graciously granted to the same Lwów Shooting Brotherhood by Our Most Serene Predecessors, made in Lwów on the 30th day of October in the year of our Lord 1671 by the Most Serene Michael of holy memory, King of Poland, Our Predecessor, signed by the hand of the Most Serene Michael, Our Predecessor, and strengthened with the Seal of the Kingdom, and asked Us through certain of Our advisors that We might deign not only to confirm this same letter with Our Royal authority, but also to improve it in certain points for the reasons described below and to supply all deficiencies. The content of that letter is as follows: Michael, by the grace of God, King of Poland, [f. 3r] Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, Livonia, Kiev, Smolensk, Siewierz, and Chernihiv. We hereby announce by this Our letter to all and singular whom it may concern: That the five parchment letters described below were presented and shown before Us in intact originals. The first of them, inscribed here in its entirety, signed by the hand of the Most Serene John Casimir, Our Predecessor, and sealed with the hanging greater seal of the Chancellery of the Kingdom contained in a tin box; the content of which first letter is as follows: John Casimir, by the grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, Livonia, Smolensk, Chernihiv, and also hereditary King of the Swedes, Goths, and Vandals. We hereby announce by this Our letter to all and singular whom it may concern: That Sigismund III of holy memory, Our most beloved Parent, granted to the Shooting Brotherhood of Our City of Lwów, established in the same City most usefully for averting and repelling incoming enemy attacks, the right and consent to collect for the use of the same Brotherhood a fee commonly called szpasźne from all merchants driving and transporting oxen and all other kinds of cattle and livestock from Wallachia and elsewhere, both into the Kingdom and outside the Kingdom, and keeping them within the borders and outside the borders of the Lwów territory for several days or for a certain time on pastures, in the amount of one grosz from each ox, and from smaller cattle and livestock half a grosz, for all eternity; however, because in that grant the space or distance of the place within which the aforementioned collection is to belong to them was not specifically defined. Therefore, in order to remove any ambiguity that might arise from this, We hereby declare and order by this Our rescript that said grant is to reach and extend to twelve miles, so that the above-named Shooting Brotherhood could and would have the right to freely collect this fee from the mentioned cattle and livestock, and that from all merchants exclusively, without anyone's opposition and hindrance within the distance of the said twelve miles. And so that the same Brotherhood, for its merits – when they repelled and drove back with great defeat the faithless and rebellious Cossacks, who recently for several weeks with a large army persistently tried to besiege this city, thanks to the skill and accuracy of shooting from hands, of which they gave abundant proofs – might experience the testimony of Our kindness and royal generosity, to the same Shooting Brotherhood for the increase and preservation of its integrity and the promotion of the exercises of the shooting art, We grant all right [f. 3v] and authority to collect from all foreign and non-local merchants arriving from any sides and nations to the same City, both for regular fairs and at any other time for the storage of goods, or returning from there, from every hundred zlotys – whether in cash brought and imported for trade purposes, or in their goods of any kind and type, after the assessment of their value confirmed by oath by the said merchants – one grosz, and to turn it to their own use and benefit. Which, bringing to the knowledge of all and singular whom it may concern, and especially to the castle and municipal office of Lwów and all other offices, We order them to preserve and maintain the above-named Shooting Brotherhood in that grant inviolably and without harm for all eternity, and to see to its preservation and maintenance by those whom it concerns, under Our grace. In witness whereof, We have ordered this document, signed by Our hand, to be strengthened with the Seal of the Kingdom. Given in Lwów, on the 2nd day of August in the year of our Lord 1650, of Our reign in Poland the 3rd, in Sweden the 4th year. John Casimir, King. Place of the greater seal of the Chancellery of the Kingdom, hanging, contained in a tin box, impressed in red wax. Wojciech Kadzidłowski, secretary of His Royal Majesty, by his own hand. The second, also on parchment, signed by the hand of the same Most Serene John Casimir and also strengthened with the hanging greater seal of the Chancellery of the Kingdom, containing within itself a privilege of donation of a certain sum, that is, fifty Polish zlotys, annually coming from the tower called the Self-Shooting tower, and collected by the Lwów Shooting Brotherhood, drawn up in Lwów on the Tuesday after Cross Sunday next in the year of our Lord 1653, and a donation of a certain plot or field in the suburb of the same City called Halickie, located on the field called Salborski, made to the same Brotherhood for the sake of shooting exercises, drawn up in Lwów on the Wednesday after Exaudi Sunday next in the same year, recognized by the Lwów magistrate or the estates of the same City, and confirmed by the same Most Serene John Casimir under the date in Lwów on the very calends of the month of August of the year mentioned above. The third, similarly on parchment, signed by the hand of the Most Serene King Sigismund III, strengthened with the hanging greater seal of the Chancellery of the Kingdom, dated in Warsaw on the 30th day of August in the year 1628, containing the fee called szpasźne, that is, the right for the Lwów Shooting Brotherhood to collect for all eternity one grosz from merchants driving oxen and other cattle and livestock from Wallachia and elsewhere into the Kingdom and outside the Kingdom, and keeping them within the borders [f. 4r] of the Lwów territory for a certain time on pastures. The fourth, also on parchment, signed by the hand of the Most Serene Henry I and the magnificent Walenty Dembiński, Chancellor of the Kingdom of Poland, and strengthened with the hanging greater seal of the Chancellery of the Kingdom, contained in a wax box and impressed in red wax, dated in Kraków at the General Coronation Sejm of the same Most Serene King, on the second day of the month of May in the year 1574, including the confirmation of the privilege or prerogative graciously granted to the mentioned Brotherhood by the Most Serene Sigismund Augustus of holy memory for the development of shooting exercises: namely, that in shooting practice, whenever one of the townspeople knocks down and strikes the bird or chicken made of wood, placed as a shooting target on the mountain of the Shooters themselves, he should be free from all levies, both royal and those enacted and to be enacted by the Commonwealth, as long as until a similar bird is knocked down by another shooter; and a broader prerogative granted by the same Most Serene Henry to shooters and gunners, that the one knocking down the made bird or the gunner hitting the center of the target with any war machine, should be free from taxes or municipal levies however named; furthermore, imposing on the mayor and councilors of the City of Lwów the duty of paying the shooters and gunners a fee of forty Polish zlotys for the purchase of jewels from the municipal treasury every year for eternity, under the penalty of one thousand Polish marks. The fifth and final letter, signed by the hand of the Most Serene King Sigismund III, sealed similarly with the hanging lesser seal of the Chancellery of the Kingdom contained in a wax box, including the confirmation of the above-written privilege of the Most Serene Henry, or the prerogatives expressed in the same privilege, dated in Warsaw on the 15th day of the month of April in the year of our Lord 1600. All these letters of those five privileges [were presented] whole, sound, intact, and free from all suspicions. And we were asked by Our advisors, currently staying at Our side, in the name and on behalf of the elders, juniors, and the entire Shooting Brotherhood established in Our City and Metropolis of Ruthenia, Lwów, that We might deign to confirm and ratify the above-written letters of the five privileges with Our Royal authority. [f. 4v] We, considering that the shooting exercise, founded with the best intention and for the public good from the most ancient times for the purpose of averting and repelling threatening enemy attacks and preserved until now, is most necessary, graciously acceding to the intercession of Our advisors to the said request, deemed it right to confirm and ratify the above-written letters – both the first, inscribed here in its entirety, and the others, specified only as to the action and date, which, however, We wish to consider as inscribed and included here – or rather the rights and privileges expressed above and all other rescripts and diplomas, graciously granted and confirmed to the mentioned Lwów Shooting Brotherhood by the Most Serene Kings of Poland, Our Predecessors, as well as the customs, habits, freedoms, and immunities, shining and lasting until now no otherwise than with the good and benefit of the Kingdom and the same City, in all their points, clauses, articles, conditions, and obligations, as if all and singular were inscribed here word for word; as well as with Our Royal authority We confirm, ratify, and approve, and We preserve and maintain the mentioned Lwów Shooting Brotherhood in these same rights, privileges, prerogatives, rescripts, letters, freedoms, immunities, customs, and habits serving them for a long time with the fullness of Our Royal power. Deciding that the said letters of the five privileges and everything contained in them should obtain the force and authority of due and inviolable durability (to the extent that it is consistent with the law). In witness whereof, We have ordered this document, signed by Our hand, to be strengthened with the Seal of the Kingdom. Given in Lwów on the 30th day of the month of October in the year of our Lord 1671, of Our reign the III year. Michael, King. Place of the hanging lesser seal of the Chancellery of the Kingdom. Stanisław Bużeński, canon of Gniezno and Warmia, regent of the Chancellery of the Kingdom. We therefore, King John, graciously acceding to the request of those Our advisors, brought to Us in the name of that Lwów Shooting Brotherhood; because it greatly matters to Us and the entire Commonwealth that that City, neighboring the borders of the pagans (with whom peace, even if concluded by ancient and recent treaties, can never be free from suspicions), located almost in their jaws and under the anvil of misfortunes, should become as fortified and supplied with weapons as possible; due to Our zeal for the Commonwealth, We have erected at no small [f. 5r] cost from Our own royal treasury works and external fortifications, destroyed and mostly ruined by the passage of time, and even rebuilt them from the very ruins, carefully took care of the erection of certain new ones and as far as it depends on Us, We toil in continuing the fortifications; wishing nevertheless to have the same City of Lwów not only girded on all sides with walls, ramparts, defensive positions, bastions, and trenches, but also equipped and adorned with prudent, brave, and proficient and well-trained in the art of shooting men and with the remaining war equipment: not only do We approve, ratify, and confirm with Our Royal authority the above-written letters concerning the shooting exercise, or rather the rights, privileges, rescripts, diplomas, customs, habits, all freedoms and immunities in general and each one separately in all points, articles, and conditions, but in order to kindle in these Lwów townspeople even greater zeal in adorning and strengthening the City, from Our certain knowledge and deliberation and with the consent of Our advisors and the entire Commonwealth, gathered with Us at this General Assembly of Our Kingdom, We hereby declare that the said Shooting Brotherhood is to collect not only the fee called szpasźne from oxen, cattle, and livestock driven or imported from Wallachia and elsewhere to and from the Polish Kingdom, one grosz from each ox, cow, calf, and Turkish, Moldavian, Wallachian, or Hungarian horse, and from smaller livestock or cattle half a grosz; but also from all foreign and domestic merchants, from the East or North and other parts and sides of the world, from wherever they bring or export sums and goods of any kind and type, of great or smaller value, as well as finer and more precious drinks, such as Hungarian, malmsey, Spanish, Italian, Wallachian wine, mead, raw or brewed, not only to Lwów, but to the entire Ruthenian voivodeship and the cities and villages belonging to it, now and in the future, during fairs or outside them, at any time, and also from the inhabitants of the Kingdom, in accordance with the privileges of the Most Serene Kings John Casimir and Michael, Our Predecessors, by virtue of this Our declaration not only at a distance of twelve miles or in the Lwów territory itself, but in the whole and in all parts, places, cities, and villages of the Ruthenian lands and counties, after prior taxation and conversion of these foreign and domestic goods and precious drinks into a fair and proper sum, which the merchants will be obliged to confirm under oath, one grosz from every hundred [zlotys], through their sub-collectors, who should be present at the administrators, superintendents, and collectors of Our and royal customs [f. 5v] in the said Ruthenian lands, for all eternity, without any bargaining and complaint of the merchants, whose claims and complaints could arise; [these amounts] they are to collect, demand, and turn faithfully (subject to rendering an account before the council magistrate) to the needs, armament, casting and pulling of cannons, their improvement, rewards for those shooting well, and other expenses concerning exclusively the shooting exercise itself, and that they should not abuse that grace and kindness of Ours in any way. Referring also to the point of the privilege of the year 1574, granted to the same Shooting Brotherhood by the Most Serene Henry, Our Predecessor, at the Coronation Sejm in Kraków, so that each of the shooters with a spirit of competition and more zealous fervor might grasp and learn the art of more accurate and correct firing of bullets from larger cannons and hitting the target and the center of the shield, commonly called the shield, and for others be a glorious encouragement in these matters: such a shooter, commonly called the King (who, however, should be a sworn citizen), hitting with any war machine in the very center of the target, as well as his successors hitting the target in a similar or more accurate way, not only should be adorned with the reward designated for him of fair and appropriate value and jewels long intended for this use and honor (which the same Shooting Brotherhood should redeem as soon as possible from this future income), but also from all and singular taxes and burdens of Ours and the Commonwealth, as well as from the payment of Our and the Commonwealth's customs, and other levies, bridge, water, and toll fees inside and outside the borders of the Kingdom, in any places, side roads, and highways, from all goods, both upon departure and return during fairs or after them, should be free and exempt, as We also declare him free and exempt by the authority of this Our Assembly – as long as until another with similar or better skill and luck hits the same target or the center of any sign and gains this glory, on the contrary, We judge and decree. Ordering furthermore the Lwów council magistrate, as the provisors of the same Brotherhood now and for all eternity, that they should release those citizens inscribed or to be inscribed in the register of shooters without any pretext and favor, but according to merit and diligence – people capable and perfecting themselves in the art of shooting – in particular and in secret, as far as it concerns private contributions and municipal burdens, to some extent from municipal burdens; and that they should never allow, under Our grace, that they be pulled and burdened by centurions, or quarter-masters [f. 6r] to any watches, municipal guards, other daily and nightly quarter-master services in gates and wickets (as they are obliged to stand and spend sleepless nights in towers, bastions, and on ramparts in sudden need and by order of the magistrate at heavier cannons in turn, as is the custom). Deciding that all those rights and privileges and this Our decision and declaration, approved by public law at this General Assembly, should have the force and authority of law, resolution, and Our eternal statute and never by Us and Our Most Serene Successors, Kings of Poland, nor by the Lwów magistrate, present and then being, of inviolable durability. And so that all this may come to the knowledge of anyone, We order that all courts and offices of the Kingdom, castle and municipal, especially of the Ruthenian lands, after the presentation of a letter of this kind of privilege and Our statute, should accept it into their acts and order it to be announced by the general bailiff of the Kingdom in the public market, and see to it that this letter is observed by all inviolably in its entirety, and observe it themselves. Wishing furthermore that the places dedicated to the glorious use of annual shooting from smaller firearms, called handguns, namely called Celstat, occupied by the gunners from Our Royal Arsenal, that is, taken away by the gunners and turned to secular uses, should be returned and vacated to the same Brotherhood as soon as possible, We order: that the same gunners from Our Royal arsenal in Lwów, at the first request of them or the highest official of the same Brotherhood, without delay under Our severe penalty should vacate and return the above-mentioned places called Celstat. In witness whereof, We have ordered this document, signed by Our hand, to be strengthened with the Seal of the Kingdom. Given in Warsaw at the General Assembly of the Kingdom, on the 8th day of the month of April in the year of our Lord 1677, of Our reign the third year etc. John, King. Place of the hanging lesser seal of the Chancellery of the Kingdom. Mikołaj Szulc, secretary of His Royal Majesty, by his own hand. On Monday on the eve of the feast of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, in the year of our Lord 1677, after the presentation by the honest Jakub Jargsch, citizen and merchant, and also scribe of the Shooting Brotherhood of the City of Lwów, the Lwów Castle Office [this document] accepted and inscribed into these acts, and ordered [f. 6v] to be announced by the general bailiff of the Kingdom, the noble Jan Zagalski. We therefore, KING AUGUSTUS, moved by the request of those Shooters of the said City of Lwów, by the advice of Our officials present with Us, this kind of privilege of the Most Serene John III, Our Predecessor, granted to the Brotherhood of those Shooters, approved and confirmed by the public Constitution of the Kingdom of the year 1677, We also with Our Royal authority in all and singular points, clauses, conditions, and obligations, as it is contained faithfully transcribed word for word above in this Our letter, approve, confirm, ratify, and that in all its articles and points according to their wording, both as to immunities, freedoms, prerogatives, customs, annual pensions, and customs fees, which they have enjoyed and enjoy until now, by all inhabitants of Our Kingdom, local governors, customs officers and their deputies, and any others should be observed, We strictly order, announce, command, and want to be kept absolutely. And because until now that shooting exercise, most necessary for the defense of this City and the entire Kingdom, was practiced only with larger bombards, that is, with arquebuses, with the abandonment of others due to the lack of means and expenses, therefore holding to the above-cited rights and privileges, renewing them with the fullness of Our Royal power, We order and command the magistrate of the same City that from now on every year in this kind of shooting exercise they should see to the preservation of such order: that after the feast of the Holy Easter, for all citizens and inhabitants of Our City of Lwów, at a convenient time, first they should organize shooting from smaller handguns, that is, from handguns, which [exercise] they will be obliged to perform by tens or quarters; then from larger bombards, that is, from arquebuses, at the established time and observed until now they should perform; finally every three years from cannons after the feast of Saint Michael the Archangel this kind of shooting with proper ceremonies and requirements they will be obliged to perform, starting such order immediately from the nearest coming year 1699 [!]. As for the places for performing this kind of exercise of shooting from handguns or muskets, occupied [f. 7r] and seized by the servants of the Crown artillery, and until now even despite frequent insistence of the townspeople, with clear violation of the privilege of Our Most Serene Predecessor, not vacated: We order that the same magistrate should insist with the Most Illustrious Elder of the Crown Artillery that he should cause the vacating and see to the return of those places necessary and essential for shooting. In witness whereof, We have ordered this document, signed by Our hand, to be strengthened with the Seal of the Kingdom. Given in Warsaw, on the 17th day of the month of October in the year of our Lord 1732, of Our reign the 36th year. Augustus, King [Below a note in pencil:] 1732 Adam Stanisław Grabowski, cathedral dean of Chełmno, royal referendary, by his own hand. Confirmation of the privileges of the Lwów Shooting Brotherhood. Reading notes

Document in the form of a parchment book (libellus / book diploma) consisting of 8 parchment leaves in a leather binding with gilding (floral motifs, rosettes). On leaf 2r, a header and a decorative initial 'S' and a vignette with the coats of arms of the Commonwealth and Saxony amidst military motifs (cannons, cannonballs, drums, banners). Signatures of King Augustus II and the royal referendary Adam Stanisław Grabowski on f. 7r. On f. 7v, the signature of the clerk Kochlewski, on f. 8r the entry 'Wielhorski sv.'. No preserved seal (once probably hung on a cord/ribbons). The catalog card incorrectly states 'number of leaves: 1' (in reality 8 parchment leaves in a binding).
