PIUS POPE IX
FOR AN EVERLASTING REMEMBRANCE. A request has been addressed to Us on behalf of the Archbishop of Lviv, that We might, out of Our benevolence, extend the privilege of pontifical insignia—which the late Pope Gregory XVI, Our Predecessor, granted to both dignities of his Metropolitan Chapter, namely the provost and the dean, by his apostolic letters issued under the Ring of the Fisherman on September 3, 1841, for only three times a year—so that they themselves might use these same pontifical insignia more frequently, yet according to the discretion of their Shepherd. We, knowing that this will contribute to the greater glory of God and the increase of the piety of the faithful, have deemed it right to graciously accede to such requests. Therefore, releasing and considering as released—solely for the sake of this matter—all and each of those to whom this Our letter is favorable, from all excommunications, interdicts, and other ecclesiastical censures, sentences, and penalties, imposed in any way and for any cause, should they have perchance fallen into them, by Our apostolic authority and by the power of this letter, We permit and grant the grace for this and future times, that the Provost and Dean of the Metropolitan Chapter of Lviv, as often as the archbishop deems it appropriate, may and shall have the power to freely and lawfully use pontificals. We grant this, however, and bestow this grace while maintaining the other conditions attached to the previous grant of Our aforementioned Predecessor, and notwithstanding any contrary circumstances, even those deserving of special and individual mention and repeal. Given in Rome at St. Peter's under the Ring of the Fisherman on May 27, 1856, in the tenth year of Our Pontificate.

Reading notes
Papal brief of Pius IX written on parchment. The catalog card incorrectly suggested that it concerned the right of the Archbishop of Lviv to use pontificals – in reality, the document extends the privilege of using pontificals to the prelates (provost and dean) of the Latin-rite Metropolitan Chapter of Lviv with the archbishop's consent (referencing the brief of Gregory XVI of September 3, 1841). The document contains the autograph approval formula of the Archbishop of Lviv, Łukasz Baraniecki, dated September 10, 1856. On the verso, there is a trace of the Fisherman's seal under a paper cover and an annotation by the agent for ecclesiastical affairs of the Austrian Empire in Rome, dated July 12, 1856.
