Aleksander Giedziński to Archbishop Mikołaj Krosnowski regarding an imprisoned thief
Aleksander Giedziński responds to a complaint-filled letter from Archbishop Krosnowski and explains the circumstances of the imprisonment of a fugitive criminal who, along with his sons, committed theft at his manor. He declares that he will consider the Archbishop's intercession on the condition that the stolen property is returned or the guilty sons are surrendered.

[P. 2]
Most Illustrious and to Me Greatly Gracious Archbishop and My Gracious Lord,
I have barely refrained from leaving Your Grace's, my Lord's, letter unanswered, looking at several distasteful accusations made against me, an old and faithful servant, in the letter of Your Grace, my Lord. Yet, as a man of lower status, I understand Your Grace, my Lord, a noble senator and [...] according to reports. It is evident that this outburst from bad [...] led Your Grace, my Lord, to such a letter. And so that I do not remain in a bad opinion with Your Grace, my Lord, I submit this account to Your Grace, my Lord: that traitor, an inhabitant of Babuszcz, a Jew, through Marzenowa, the housekeeper of my manor and his sister, snuck into my son Andrzej's [service] [...] his eldest son. [...] he gave him into service. There, as a “virtuous” father, he gave him good instruction and taught him that in which he himself was skilled – it was no different, as His Grace the Official, my brother, also knows – that having shared six hundred zlotys with my other youth Nahoruhicz, he gave them to his father, and he himself, at his instigation, fled from me in Lublin with a banner. He had done this before more than once as a member of the household and a confidant; he took advantage of what could be pinched, for I trusted him, and only later did his servant reveal it. This tasted good to the “virtuous” father, so he persuaded his second younger son as well, whose appearance promised quite something else, but paternal upbringing led him astray – this one in a short time [...] and followed the first by the same path.
[P. 3]
If I were to write all this down for Your Grace, my Lord, it would have to be a long story, and I do not wish to bore Your Grace, my Lord. As for the place where he was hiding now, fleeing from me – not knowing in whose jurisdiction it was – as an open thief, to whom even the Church itself cannot grant asylum, I captured him. He does not sit in prison for free, but works [...] just as he deserved. However, if he produces the sons or returns the stolen items, the intercession of Your Grace, my Lord, as a great and noble man, will carry weight with me.
Of whom at this time I am
a sincerely well-wishing friend
and humble servant,

Page 1 is an inventory card; page 5 is an old archival cover from the 19th/20th century with the signature 'C. 47. Giedzinski A. 1647'. In the text of the letter (pp. 2 and 3), there are paper losses due to abrasions and ink/moisture stains, with partial loss of individual words. The name 'Aleksander' is derived from the abbreviation 'Al' at the signature and the entry in the inventory and on the cover (p. 5).
