Letter from Jakub Bartholdy to Jan Stanisław Jabłonowski regarding a loan and land
Jakub Bartholdy informs Jan Stanisław Jabłonowski of his departure to Gdańsk to secure a loan of six thousand thalers and requests that Mr. Winarski provide a guarantee for the debt. He also requests the return of the land in Świecie that was taken from him and appeals for the renewal of an edict prohibiting townspeople from illegally mortgaging and selling meadows to the nobility.

[P. 2]
Most Illustrious and Noble Voivode,
My Great Lord and Benefactor!
Just as I have striven with all diligence throughout this time to please Your Lordship's eyes with virtue, in [...] labors, and with faithfulness in duty, so now, when Your Lordship's command has arrived, I do not wish to neglect any duty of obedience toward Your Illustriousness, my Lord and Benefactor. Setting out immediately for Gdańsk, although I am in failing health, I shall there strive earnestly to obtain from some Gdańsk merchant the sum of six thousand minted thalers on commission to tide us over, providing my own surety. And so that it may be certain regarding the credit, I humbly request that Your Illustriousness deign to order His Grace Mr. Winarski to commit himself to the merchant-creditor with his own promissory note for the repayment. Perhaps Your Illustriousness has in fresh memory how, at the time when Your Illustriousness, our Lord and Benefactor, was present here in Świecie
[P. 3]
while honoring you, I did not dare to trouble you about the commission for several thousand, yet I received for use the Old Town promised by your word, but immediately during my absence this land was taken from me and given and granted to one who, caring only for his own affairs, has never served nor will ever serve the common good or the starosty. Therefore, I humbly request Your Illustriousness to recover this land. I report herewith, as is my duty, that Your Illustriousness's edict, which restrains our townspeople from selling and mortgaging meadows to foreigners or the nobility, is received with great respect, with the exception of certain persons from the magistrate who, disregarding Your Illustriousness's strict prohibition, pawn, mortgage, and sell off meadows. Therefore, I humbly ask that Your Illustriousness, my Lord and our Gracious Benefactor, by a renewed edict to the magistrate, protect them from harm at the hands of the nobility,
[P. 4]
from whom the neighboring townsman suffers many arbitrary acts in the meadows; and now, at every beck and call, I report myself ready.
