Translation / modern text
Sigismund III, by the grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia and Livonia, etc., and also the closest heir and future King of the Kingdom of Sweden.
Illustrious, faithful to us and dear ones!
At the recently concluded Sejm, in accordance with the opinion of the lords of the Crown Council, we summoned the Lower Cossacks for service in Ukraine. In order to pay them the wages due for the service rendered, we turned to the Rawa deputies for the quarter money. It has already been brought to the designated place, the town hall in Lwów.
Therefore, we are sending the well-born Jakub Pretfic, Starosta of Trembowla, to collect the money in Lwów and take it to the army. He himself will tell you more about this.
We therefore wish that you give him credence, agree on all matters with him, and assist in his rapid departure. Provide also horses for the transport of the money as far as Trembowla. Everything that he conveys and orders to you in our name, execute without delay and without refusal.
Given in Kraków on July 25, 1591, in the fourth year of our reign.
Sigismund, King [signature].
Address on the reverse: to the mayor, councillors, reeve and aldermen of our city of Lwów, faithful to us and dear. Seal preserved. Later note: Sigismund III; Kraków, July 25, 1591.
Page 4 is a copy of the same letter, from the titles to the date and signature, and repeats the address in a fuller form. Its content corresponds to the above modernization; at the signature, it adds the abbreviation m. p., meaning by his own hand. The header of the copy states the year 1591 and the month VII, i.e., July.
Later archival cover: Letter of Sigismund III from Kraków to the magistrate of the city of Lwów with news of sending Jakub Pretfic to Lwów for money intended for the Zaporozhian army. Original. Date: July 25, 1591; fond 132, inventory 1, unit 26; three pages.

Reading notes
All four scans were reviewed. One Polish letter and its later copy, not two separate letters. The original on p. 2 defines the money as quarter money and allocates it for the due pay of the Lower Cossacks; it does not state the amount or the number of horses. The Rawa deputies are mentioned in the original. Place of storage of the money: Lwów town hall. The provision of horses concerns the transport of money to Trembowla, although the Starosta is then to take it to the army. 'Przypowiedzenie służby' means summoning or commissioning military service. 'W. W.' is a chancellery address to municipal authorities, rendered as 'You'. The surname written as Pretfica has been left in this form, without deciding on its normalization; the office of the Starosta of Trembowla is legible. The date July 25, 1591, and the fourth year of the reign come from the text, not from neighboring letters. In the address on p. 3, its left beginning is obscured; a fuller entry 'Famatis' is found in the copy on p. 4, which is explicitly indicated. 'Advocatus' means reeve. The transcription organizes spelling and punctuation; it is not a diplomatic edition. Apart from the obscured beginning of the address, there are no gaps in the essential content. The note 'm. p.' on p. 4 is an element of the copy, not a second royal autograph.

Notes on the translation (transferred from the text): spelling of the surname according to the manuscript. Beginning obscured; in the copy: 'Sławetnym'.
