Translation / modern text
Dear Councilors, I wish you from the bottom of my heart good health and prosperity in all things from God.
I have understood from your letter, as well as from the protest and the articles, what has happened. Together with you, I am astonished by all this and lament that it is happening in the absence of the monarch, as a man who has always wished all good things for the borderland cities. I grieve that, contrary to your laws, privileges, and ancient customs, those gentlemen are binding you with threats. Especially since this is not happening with the common consent of the Crown and all the lands belonging to it, but only with the consent of one province. This violates the liberties and grants received from princes and kings, and turns the authority of the chancellery, the gravity of the Assessorial Court, as well as the courts of Magdeburg law and their proceedings into nothing.
This entails a change in the order of the judiciary. It affects us, the seal-bearers, particularly, because we are the guardians of the privileges that issue from our chancellery. We will strive and act against this, so that such great and unbearable harm is not done to you, and such significant humiliation is not brought upon us who hold office. We could have already taken joint action by writing to those gentlemen with a request and admonition not to rush into this, but to follow the example of other voivodeships, leave you in peace, and postpone the matter to the Sejm. For there, the general manner and type of judiciary in the Crown will be discussed, considered, and determined; only there can it be properly resolved.
However, we have concluded that our letters would not help you in this matter. Some would surely disregard our persons [further phrase uncertain] and would want to interpret and translate our words differently, instead of accepting our arguments or considering the request. Therefore, we have refrained from writing.
As for the guidance you expect from me in this matter, I highly commend your legal actions: you immediately protested against the burdens and appealed to the future General Sejm of the Crown. Do not, however, engage in other actions. Defend yourselves with your liberties and privileges. In due time, the matter will find the proper path and way of resolution.
When, God willing, we gather together for the assembly, do not neglect to send several envoys. Let them present your grievances before this assembly and ask for you to be maintained in your rights, liberties, and privileges. I and my colleague, the Chancellor, will defend you and oppose their violation. We will also persuade other senator lords, our colleagues, so that your liberties remain intact and our authority is fully preserved. Do not doubt that in this matter we will not allow for your legal detriment.
I commend you to God.
Kraków, January 14, 1575.
Your well-wishing friend,
Piotr Dunin Wolski, Deputy Chancellor of the Crown.
Address: To the illustrious mayor and councilors of the city of Lwów, dearest friends.

[S.4]
swych zachowani byli, prosili. Panu Bogu poruczam. Dat Cracoviae die 14 mensis Januarij Anno Dni 1575.
W. Mci życzliwy przyjaciel

Reading notes
All five pages viewed. One letter spread across PDF pp. 2–4; p. 5 contains the address, seal, and scribal repetitions, not a separate document. IMPORTANT DISCREPANCY: the cover states January 15, 1575, whereas the date stamp on p. 4, re-examined under magnification, clearly reads 'die 14 mensis Januarij Anno Dni 1575'; January 14 has been adopted. Author and office legible in the signature. Working transcription with partial normalization of spelling; several words and sentences remain uncertain, especially fragments regarding means of pressure and expected reactions of senators. The absence of the monarch itself has not been identified with a specific constitutional resolution beyond the content of the letter. The author recommends a future General Sejm and assembly; the cover calls it a coronation one, but no such adjective was read in the text. This is the position of the Deputy Chancellor and a promise to defend the city, not proof of intervention or resolution of the dispute. The cited protest, articles, and privileges are not attached here. Concordance with editions has not been checked.
