Most Illustrious Lord Starosta of Starogard,
My Most Illustrious Lord and Brother!
Since necessity requires that the local garrison should continue to remain in Lwów, common sense dictates that it should receive its maintenance from all inhabitants, subject to any jurisdiction and having their source of livelihood there. I wish and request that Your Grace, my Gracious Lord, by the duty of your office, assist the burghers in such a way that both Christians and Jews, as well as various jurisdictions, contribute together as if for the common rescue and pay all contributions and duties equally; it would also not hurt to threaten the recalcitrant with military execution. In this alone, Your Grace, my Gracious Lord, needs to be particularly vigilant, so that those rations are issued for as many men as are actually present there (as already specified in His Royal Majesty's establishment, and not for eight hundred infantrymen, of whom there are evidently not that many); for otherwise, it would not only be a public injustice, but His Royal Majesty would also not approve of such conduct by the authorities, which can easily be observed in Lwów. Regarding all this – although I do not doubt that you will be diligently busy with your usual care – I also ask that you prevent the oppression of poor people and strive to keep the soldiers in proper discipline, so that they do not bother the commoners and do not extort benefits beyond their duty. Indeed, upon my arrival, God willing, at the side of His Royal Majesty, I will strive to alleviate this burden as soon as possible. And now I offer Your Grace, my Gracious Lord, my goodwill. Given in Kraków on the 28th of August, 1665.
