[Magdalena?] Kuropatnicka, Abbess of the Lviv Convent [of Benedictines] Jan Małachowski, Grand Crown Chancellor, Bishop of Kraków
March 10, 1743 · Lviv

Magdalena Kuropatnicka, Abbess of the Lviv Benedictines, complains to Chancellor Jan Małachowski about the Lviv Magistrate, who violates the privileges of the convent's jurisdiction, unlawfully summons, raids, and imprisons the craftsmen under her authority. She asks the Chancellor for a written intervention with the city authorities to stop further grievances and violations until the dispute is resolved by an appointed commission.

[P. 2] Copy of the letter of Her Ladyship Miss Kuropatnicka, Abbess of the Lviv Convent, to His Most Illustrious Lordship the Grand Chancellor, March 10, 1743. With deep submission, I fall together with my entire congregation at the feet of His Most Illustrious Lordship, my benefactor, complaining and lamenting against the Lviv Magistrate, who, as if in defiance, disregarding the privileges of our jurisdictions granted by the most illustrious kings, refuses to observe them in any way or listen to them when read, even though these jurisdictions are protected by the constitution. They forcibly drag [people] to city courts and guilds, seize, judge, and imprison them, without waiting at least for an assessor's verdict, as they have summoned us to present the privileges we possess, starting from the late King Władysław of blessed memory to the one currently reigning happily. They do not inflict such harm on the Zborów jurisdiction as a privileged one; God forbid they should violate [P. 3] anything noble or Szczerzec-related, or any other lordly jurisdictions in general, even if unprivileged, for they fear those, but they do not fear us, the nuns, at all. Now, our woodcarver of the free craft quarreled with another, a city one, who sent dragoons through proxies to our jurisdiction and to the house of our woodcarver. They committed great violence: they broke into the house, dragged the woodcarver out, and beat him with bardiches so that after a long illness he barely escaped death. And now, hiding the fact that this happened at his instigation, he has even filed a lawsuit against our woodcarver in the city, at the town hall, regarding the old quarrel. Since, due to our privileges, we forbade [him] to appear before the court, the magistrate first issued a default judgment, and then a decree of arrest. And so, unable to endure any longer the grievances contrary to our privileges that often befall us, I turn to the gracious protection of His Most Illustrious Lordship, my benefactor, humbly asking, [P. 4] that you deign to write to the magistrate so that they observe our privileges, do not drag [people] to their courts, and even less dare to seize and imprison them. Let them wait for the verdict in the matter of failure to maintain the privileges and the constitution. From the commission, it will become clear what grievances we are suffering and what claims the city has against us. They would like to tear away property from the churches and diminish what is due to the Church from the fields, for which I also humbly ask a second time.
