Translation / modern text
Jarosław, 3 July 1693.
Most gracious Mr Głogowski, my benefactor.
I received your letter asking me to keep the gold ducats left with me until your return from the Tribunal. God is my witness that I would gladly have fulfilled your wish and kept these coins, had my very pressing and urgent need not forced me to act: [...] I had to hand them over.
I waited until Tuesday, when you were to send your servant from Jarosław, so as not to act against your wishes. Unable to wait any longer, however, I spent the gold ducats; several were underweight. I was truly in a situation as though I had a knife at my throat. If you want gold ducats, please send me [the corresponding amount] in the remaining thalers. I shall obtain a few or a dozen or so [?] gold ducats in Jarosław and send them back to you. Please forgive me [...] — sudden necessity forced me to do this. [...] I am also physically weak [following phrase uncertain].
Without keeping you reading any longer, I commend myself to your favour and remain your affectionate, humble servant, Józef Gruszewicz.
[P.S.] Trusting in your word, I venture once again to ask for the dog you promised to send me. [...] I trusted that promise so far that I almost swore to a good friend that you would send me the dog. [...] your brother [...] [uncertain passage about dispatch]. I leave this to your will.
[Address:] To Franciszek Głogowski in Biała.
Original wording — transcription
Reading notes
All four pages were inspected; one letter with a postscript, without a separate enclosure. No earlier transcription was found. The date 3 July 1693 and Jarosław are legible. The address names Franciszek Głogowski and Biała; which settlement is intended remains undetermined. There is no certain total sum; the numerical passage on page 3 remains uncertain. Czerwone złote is retained as a term for gold coins, without conversion into accounting złoty. The underweight condition of several coins is the author’s assertion, without weight measurements. The explanation of the pressing need and part of the postscript’s ending have not been fully read. The request concerns a dog, but neither breed nor purpose is established. The promised exchange of coins and dispatch of the dog have not been treated as completed actions. Spelling has been partly regularised.
