Translation / modern text

Władysław IV, by the grace of God, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Masovia, Samogitia, Livonia, Smolensk, and Chernihiv, and hereditary King of the Swedes, Goths, and Vandals. Honorable and illustrious, our faithful and dear ones! By the act of the last Sejm, commissioners were appointed from among the senators and deputies. They were assigned to the treasurers of the Crown and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania to appraise all goods and set their prices. The commission is to convene on May 27 in Warsaw, at our residence. Therefore, we have ordered you to be notified of this. We wish for you, in accordance with the intent of the Crown estates, to select from among yourselves suitable people: experienced, knowledgeable about the prices and value of foreign goods, and prudent in their valuation. Send them at the appointed time to the indicated place so that they may perform the tasks entrusted to them by the act and provide information to the other participants. We trust that you will fulfill this duty and send your representatives to the proceedings, upon which much depends for the entire Commonwealth. We assure you of our royal favor. Given in Warsaw on April 27, 1643, in the eleventh year of our reign in Poland and Sweden. Władysław, King. Address: To the honorable and illustrious mayor, councilors, reeve, jurors, and the entire magistracy of our city of Lwów, our faithful and dear ones.

Reading notes

Constitutia refers to a parliamentary act, not a constitution in the modern sense. Taxa in this context means valuation or price tariff, not automatically a tax. Date of the letter: April 27; commission deadline: May 27. The transcription modernizes spelling and expands abbreviations. All three pages of the PDF were reviewed; the archival cover is not a second letter.
