Letter from Bishop Franciszek Krasiński to the Lviv city councilors regarding the defense of municipal liberties

Franciszek Krasiński, by the grace of God, Bishop of Kraków Clarissimis et honoratis viris dominis Consulibus Civitatis Leopoliensis (Dear Gentlemen Councilors of Lviv)
February 21, 1575 · Bodzentyn

Bishop of Kraków Franciszek Krasiński responds to the Lviv city councilors regarding their request for intercession in the face of the violation of their privileges by the noble courts of the Ruthenian Voivodeship. He informs them of his intervention with the Voivode and the deputies, and in case of resistance, advises them to file a formal protest and postpone the matter until the election of a new king.

Translation / modern text

[P. 2] Dear Gentlemen Councilors, I wish you all the best for a long time. I thank you for not omitting me, as one of the Crown senators, in your letter informing me of your grievance, remembering all the good regarding my benevolence. I also regret that your city, which in recently passed times was sufficiently privileged, suffers such oppression, especially at this time when everyone must be preserved in their freedom and law. And since you are writing to [me?] [...] asking for advice and help on how you could prevent this, so that nothing happens to you against the law and there is no violation of your freedom at these courts, [which] are decreed by the Ruthenian Voivodeship and appointed in Lviv. For this time, I cannot give any other help, except that I am sending a letter to the Voivode of Ruthenia, so that he may help you in this, so that you may be preserved in your liberties. I am also writing to the gentlemen deputies to these courts; if, following this letter, they do not wish to desist and because of this your city were to suffer harm to its liberties, I see no other way for this than to solemnly protest and maintain patience until the time when we have a Lord in the Crown. Then I – as I have often done before – promise to help you in seeking justice as much as I can. And with this, I wish you good health. Given in Bodzentyn, February 21, in the year of our Lord 1575. To Your Graces, a well-wishing friend Franciszek Krasiński by the grace of God, Bishop of Kraków by his own hand [P. 3, Address:] To the most illustrious and honorable men, the gentlemen councilors of the city of Lviv, as dearest friends.
