Translation / modern text

My esteemed Mr Clerk, my great friend! I well remember your mentioning Father Stanimirowski. On meeting him, I saw for myself that he is a worthy and learned prelate. For many years he has laboured in the Lord’s vineyard, and God said that every worker is worthy of his wages. To encourage him to continue serving God and showing goodwill towards me, I gladly grant him this prebend; his diligent work deserves the greatest possible reward. As I wrote three days ago, commending my building to your care, I now renew my request that the work be brought to completion. I shall be indebted to you personally for it. I am astonished at the foolishness of Father Rozewski [?] and Janowski, an old man, who, contrary to my instructions, did not send to Jarosław or Manasterzyce to enquire about the barge. It stopped near Manasterzyce on 6 July because the low water prevented it from reaching Jarosław. O foolish Galatians! The people aboard the barge likewise proved foolish and sluggish, failing to report their arrival. Manasterzyce is only twelve miles from Lviv, and they should be found there unless the water has risen; in that case they ought to have moved towards Jarosław. I think, however, that they have not done so, since Manasterzyce is closer to Lviv. Through their folly they caused me loss by maintaining the peasants needlessly for two weeks. Let them ask Mr Przemyski for some thirty transport carts and a couple of teams of horses with estate wagons. Lighter things should go on the transport carts in quantities they can bear, so as not to break the wagons, and the other things on the estate wagons. They should all set out together and travel together without separating, so that no loss occurs. Please convey these instructions to them. I commend myself to your favour. Sieciechów, 18 July 1635. Your affectionate friend and servant, Stanisław Grochowski, Archbishop of Lviv. Address: Wojciech Zimnicki, clerk of the Lviv magistrate.

Moy Mci Panie Pisarzu, Przyiacielu moy wielki. Z Sieciechowa 18 Julij 1635. Reading notes

PDF pp. 9–10: letter; p. 11: address; pp. 18–19: later copy, not a separate letter.
Stanimirowski is a provisional reading; no first name has been supplied. Rozewski is also uncertain and has not been identified with a particular cleric. Manasterzyce is retained as written, without automatic geographical identification. Pan Przemyski is the source’s wording, not a certain surname or established office. The request for transport carts does not establish that carriage took place. The text gives the author’s judgement of the barge crew’s fault; the accusations have not been verified. All nineteen pages were visually inspected: four letters and four later copies, with no additional letter on pages 12–19.
