[P. 2]
Glory to God, in the year 1616, on the 11th of September in Husiatyn
Most honorable, famous, most wise, and especially most gracious Sir, most venerable dear Friend and distinguished Patron! After wishing you God's grace and abundant blessing, along with the offering of my humble, wretched services, I report that I have duly received Your Excellency's letter of the 7th of this [month] via Mr. Topolski's servant, Hanus, here (after I arrived here late yesterday). In it, Your Excellency is very displeased with Mr. Ubaldini for holding my letter for so long and not sending it to Your Excellency before the Jarosław fair via Barnet, as I had requested, which indeed surprised and saddened me greatly when I learned of it. But since he acted so, I cannot remedy it now and must entrust it to God, who watches over everything. As for the fact that Your Excellency is more surprised at me than at Mr. Ubaldini, that after Your Excellency's frequent reminders I did not write via a special messenger and thus put Your Excellency in even greater contempt and suspicion among my lords the creditors – God knows that it is not because I would not willingly (if possible) give news of myself and report on my actions almost daily. But truly (God have mercy) I am almost losing my mind, I am lost to the whole world and must stay in this wilderness and among almost barbaric people, where I do not know at all nor can I find out what the Voivode intends or is plotting against me [...] but trusting in God's mercy, I wait for something to be achieved and for me to be able to satisfy my lords the creditors. And furthermore, I certainly do not have enough in my entire estate to order a special messenger and send him to Your Excellency, even if it were to be counted as a penalty or the costs were to be returned; and so I know nothing certain to write, nor is anything certain written to me. But if I were to write, I would write nothing but lies and – with all due respect – nonsense, which they use here when they speak to me, with which I would only disturb Your Excellency by writing pure uncertainty. Therefore, I ask for God's sake that Your Excellency, because my writing has been so delayed and postponed, does not count it as recklessness, negligence, or anything bad. If something was neglected or overlooked due to heartache, or if it caused some distaste and resentment toward me among my lords the creditors, I must accept it before dear God as a decree, for He who wishes to have me under the whip of great affliction and sorrow, let Him lead it further according to His holy will [...], and when it pleases Him, let Him take me from this wretched vale of tears to Himself for eternal rest. To Him be glory, honor, praise, and thanksgiving for all things forever, amen.
[P. 3]
That the fehetz [...] was to be sold so surely to Barnet, about which Your Excellency informs me now in your letter, and that he yielded so voluntarily, I have not been able to find out here until now. From this, Your Excellency can gauge how this matter is being handled here and what I can write to my lords the creditors about my state. Although I received such an answer from the Voivode through Mr. Topolski, when I insisted that the fehetz [...] be released to me, that the Voivode sold this fehetz to Barnet for 30 [...] (I do not know exactly, however, whether in grain, in [...] or in goods, or in Gdańsk); but when I gave my answer to this and sincerely opposed it, I was ordered to go here, where I have also arrived. What will happen to me here, dear God and time will reveal and teach us. I would very much wish that my lords the creditors were with me (or an appointed proxy in my place) here [...], and provided me with help and support against the violence and injustice I suffer from the Voivode, and against the treacherous designs of Barnet [...]. And I ask Your Excellency in the most humble way, if Mr. Sanicki were in Lviv or nearby, that Your Excellency would be pleased to ask him (and persuade him) in my name to come here to me and see with his own eyes what I am experiencing here in my case (or rather in the case of my lords the creditors) and how I am dealing with them, so that he and the lords the creditors could then hear from me duly and with certainty whether I am to blame for what I am enduring. Since Mr. Strossbergler is also here, and the Voivode is [...], I learn that something will be undertaken in my case, as the Voivode has already spoken with Mr. Strossbergler. Where, however, the Almighty God will direct their hearts and how He will arrange my case, that is known to Him alone. As long as I live, with the help of the Highest, I will do what is best and as much as is in my power to [...] preserve and show everyone that I have not strived in vain, but that my intention is to gather together again what God-fearing people have entrusted to me in good faith and to preserve it as best as possible according to all fairness, as I have done until now. And as soon as dear God helps me to some settlement of the matter here, I will write to Your Excellency about everything more extensively as needed and will come to Your Excellency myself. If the matter is delayed, I will come anyway. Meanwhile, I ask that Your Excellency be pleased to remain my gracious Patron, speak well of me to friends, and ask everyone to maintain patience out of Christian compassion and mercy until I can give a reliable and exhaustive account of my affairs. God...

Reading notes
Letter unsigned at the bottom of p. 3 – the text breaks off at the words 'Gott der' (possible lack of continuation/next page or lack of conclusion). The author (Jakub Dementer) and the recipient (Maciej Hajder, Lviv councilor) were identified based on the archival inventory and the context of the entire unit (cf. pp. 5-7). The inventory provides an incorrect date 'February 1616' (likely resulting from reading another letter in the unit), while the header of the letter clearly states: 'Anno 1616 Ady 11 Septemb[ris] in Husiatin'.
Other letters in this unit
- Jakub Dementer to Maciej Hajder regarding difficulties with creditors and the Voivode
- Address of a letter from Jakub Dementer to Lviv councilor Maciej Hajder
