Translation / modern text

Warsaw, 25 May 1685. Sir, I received your letter of the 17th of this month. For the arrangements with Theodor Jaschiewic I refer you to my previous letter of the 19th, enclosing his handwritten undertaking. He still owes [1020?; currency uncertain] under his obligations; I expect payment at any moment. The silver and gold belts remain with him. As I wrote previously, I await your instructions before leaving. Thomas Cuming has gone to Lublin and is expected back next week. If I meet him before leaving, I shall insist on payment, at least of the greater part of the sum. I also have [unread reference] from Mr Robert on the same matter. I acted with Gardin in accordance with your letter and often discuss the matter with him. He promises to pay before I leave. I received full payment from Harciewic according to his obligations. Today I settled accounts with Mr Waat, and after much pleading he gave me a bill for [amount and currency unread], drawn on Mr Broun and payable to Mr Forbes in Gdańsk three days after sight. If an opportunity arises, I shall send Forbes a further [amount unread], but intend to stay here no longer than next week. Some of the Jews who were to pay during this fair have already left. According to your letter [uncertain passage], I paid Jerzy Dragniewicz [?] [amount unread]. We expect the Sejm here to conclude at any moment; the principal reason it did not finish long ago is their own private [interest?; ending unread]. I send my respects and commend you and your business to God. Your devoted servant, Alex Huisone. Address: Arthur Forbes, merchant, in Lviv.

Reading notes

Amounts and currency symbols are not secure enough to constitute a financial statement. Full Satisfactione means a reported complete repayment by one debtor, distinct from other debtors’ promises. The final sentence about the Sejm is the author’s comment and is partly unread. The identity of Jerzy, whose surname is provisionally read as Dragniewicz, has not been established. The letter does not confirm that the bill was honoured in Gdańsk.
