Translation / modern text
Most esteemed Mr Forbes, my Lord and Benefactor!
I reply so late because of the troubles and afflictions I innocently endure from my late husband’s creditors. Although they see my innocence, they pay it no regard. I would rather deal with “Manistami” [?; unidentified word] or other people than with such merciless and pitiless persons. For a long time they delayed settling the poor widow’s affairs and thereby ruined me. I do not see that they themselves have gained much or can gain much, even if they continue to destroy me and expose me to unnecessary expenses. I have no hope other than my God, who will not abandon me with my little children.
I therefore implore you and fall at your feet: as a decent man of good conscience, please have regard for me and the poor fatherless children my husband left me. Please consider my wretched condition. I call God, before whom all things are known, to witness that you gentlemen suffer this great loss not through me, but through hard times and wicked people. I swear on my conscience before the divine majesty: I have nothing left with which to pay.
I paid as long as I could and thereby brought myself to ruin. I surrendered even all the small possessions and jewels my husband gave me during his lifetime, although they belonged neither to the trading assets nor to the creditors [the writer’s claim about rights to these objects]. I submit this to your judgment and ask you to consider my grievous widowhood. God alone knows how I live in this world. Truly there is no mercy among our gentlemen.
I pray to God that they may be satisfied with my death as soon as possible, for it seems to me that my life is nearing its end: such torments cannot be endured. A hundred times I beg you, my Lord and Benefactor, for mercy and release from this burden, so that I may have some means of supporting myself and the orphans. I now have to live on my remaining resources and will eventually be utterly ruined.
Please persuade the other creditors too to have regard for my innocence. Where there is nothing to take, even the emperor loses his right [a proverbial expression]: they will take nothing from a person stripped of everything or from defenceless children.
In the name of Almighty God I entrust myself to you. To the end of my life I shall be obliged to pray for you. I commit you to the protection of the Most High God, and commend myself to His unchanging grace, remaining your sincerely well-disposed friend and servant,
Elżbieta Gordonowa.

Mnie wielce mosci Panie Forbess, a moy MM Panie y Dobrodzieiu.

Reading notes
All five pages of the unit were inspected. Two original letters; no earlier translations were found apart from metadata. The long second letter contains the writer’s statements of despair and death, not information about her subsequent fate. Her deceased husband’s first name, the number of children and the cause of the trading losses beyond the letter’s general argument have not been established. The assertion about jewellery given to her is not a verified determination of ownership. Manistami [?] remains unidentified and has not been equated with a religious or ethnic group. The transcription retains the grammatical-gender fluctuation wypłacałem/obracałem; the modern Polish version uses the feminine in accordance with the signature. The intermediary’s surname on the inverted address is uncertain. The phrase about the emperor is proverbial, not a quotation of a specific legal provision.
