Translation / modern text

[P. 7] My Dear Mr. Hayder, My Most Gracious Sir and Benefactor. I hold the matter of Your Grace, my Lord, both in fresh memory and in careful custody. I found the motion in my chest, although I had somewhat forgotten about it, of which – I believe – His Grace Mr. Wachlewicz has informed Your Grace, my Lord. I have not yet been able to meet with His Grace Mr. Mullin due to his constant amusements, with whom "now it is time to drink, now to strike the earth with a free foot." There is no lawyer at the court except for Mr. Dyszyński; however, I expect that they will all arrive at the beginning of Lent, as the adjournment was only until February 19th. I cannot obtain any information about Brykner myself – whether he is alive or has already been counted among the dead. Your Grace, my Lord, I presume, already knows something certain about him. I have described the local news in a general letter; Mr. Łukaszowic has also written a little to His Grace Mr. Wachlewicz (to whom I also offer my services), as well as to His Grace Mr. Zimorowicz. Whatever happens in the meantime, I shall not fail in my duty to inform Your Grace, my Lord, at the earliest opportunity. As for what is currently happening with me here, Your Grace, my Lord, will learn either from His Grace Mr. Grozwajer or from His Grace Mr. Zimorowicz; I have neither the free time nor the peace of mind to describe it to Your Grace, my Lord. I therefore commend all my obedience to Your Grace, my Lord. In Warsaw, February 11, 1646. Your Grace's, my Gracious Lord and Benefactor's, obedient servant, S. Kuszeniewicz [Kuszelewicz] by his own hand. [P. 8, address:] To my Most Gracious Lord and Benefactor, His Grace Mr. Maciej Hayder, Lviv councilor, into his hands.

Reading notes

The day and year in the letter (Warsaw, February 11, 1646) differ from the collective date in the inventory (January 1641). The author's signature is written in a form close to 'S Kuszeniewicz', identical to Stanisław Kuszelewicz (Kuszelowicz). In the address, the recipient is called 'Mr. Maciej Hayder' (in the inventory 'Matwiej' / 'Mateusz'). The text contains a quote from Horace (Odes I, 37: 'nunc est bibendum, nunc pede libero pulsanda tellus'). On p. 8, a wax seal is preserved.
