Translation / modern text
[P. 13]
Monseigneur,
His Majesty the King, after the post-Sejm Senate council (at which I could not be present due to poor health), which was torn by various aspirations, finally left late at night for Łowicz, preparing himself for the favors of the court, not without great scruples regarding the Elbląg council (which was intricately conducted by the deputies), leaving only a shadow of the Commonwealth. The signatures of the Lords Senators were forced upon it, whom His Majesty the King visited almost all, into which the Lord Voivode of Kraków
[P. 14]
fell imprudently. However, our Most Illustrious Voivode and Castellan of Vilnius, suspicious of the Brandenburg treaty, have not yet put their hands to it. Just before the departure, His Royal Grace [...] troops were with His Majesty the King and submitted them against the court authority to the will of the monarch. 3,400 Saxon troops were introduced into it to the greatest detriment of the lords' regiments, where I too was reduced, and greater regard was shown for Mr. Berens, the Lwów commandant, than for me; holy patience, let the doctor enjoy his peace. Meanwhile, more freely, I will undertake the Roman journey, where (if God gives health) I will see Your Grace's nephew; let him serve the Commonwealth anew, since his father's merits have ceased. May he find a happier Fatherland than it appears now.
[P. 15]
I thank you humbly for forwarding such an obliging letter from Her Ladyship the Marchioness, my Benefactress, on behalf of her son, and for such an effective recommendation of both Their Graces. The original, as Your Grace ordered, I am sending back, remaining with the obligation of eternal gratitude
Your Grace's, my Gracious Lord's, heartily loving brother and humble servant
